The examinations have been performed with glycoproteidic fractions of Trichophyton verrucosum (Tv-GP) and T. mentagrophytes (Tm-GP) purified by a method of gel chromatography. Trichophytins were intradermally injected at a dose of 2.0 ml (1.0 mg of protein) and the results were estimated after 24 and 72 h on the basis of differences in skin fold thickness (RGFS). In animals infected with lice or scabies in a farm free of trichophytosis the median value of RGFS was below 1.0 mm and maximal value was 2.0 mm. The reactivity of horse skin to intradermal inoculation of histamine, serotonin and bradykinin was investigated, and the resulting reactions compared with those produced in the same horses by a 1% whole-body extract of Culicoides. Both histamine and bradykinin produced large reactions, but there was no significant correlation between the dermal responsiveness to insect allergen and either histamine or bradykinin. Two anti-histamine drugs (promethazine hydrochloride and tripelennamine hydrochloride) were effective in reducing the reaction produced by the insect extract.

Lidocaine hydrochloride is an amide-type local anesthetic, commonly used for facial plastic as well as other surgical procedures. In an unusual case of reproducible anaphylactic reaction to lidocaine, early treatment with epinephrine, oxygenation, and intravenous fluid resuscitation resulted in relief of the symptoms. This case demonstrates the importance of sensitivity testing and choosing an appropriate alternative local anesthetic in a patient with a history of possible allergy to lidocaine.

A component of an extract from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus larval ticks induced an immediate hypersensitivity reaction in sensitized cattle when intra-dermally inoculated. A number of drugs used in cancer chemotherapy have produced hypersensitivity reactions. Generalized urticaria to cyclophosphamide has been reported previously in 5 cases. We have recently observed a 25-year-old patient with M. Hodgkin who developed an anaphylactic shock immediately following an intravenous infusion of cyclophosphamide. Total serum IgE was significantly elevated (1280 U/ml). Using the epicutan skin testing highly positive papulo-vesicular reaction to cyclophosphamide was observed.

A patient with the adult respiratory distress syndrome was found to have an alveolar allergic reaction demonstrated by transbronchial lung biopsy. The clinical course and subsequent skin test reactivity suggested ampicillin as the cause. This is an unusual presentation of ampicillin allergy, and drug sensitivity is suggested as another cause of the adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) was investigated in a series of patients with epithelial tumours of the skin and with Kaposi's sarcoma. In all 53 patients the peripheral blood lymphocyte count showed no substantial difference from the control values. An uncommon reaction to varicella vaccine has been urticaria. Based on two reports of urticaria believed to be due to gelatin in recipients of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, we suspected gelatin as the cause of generalized urticaria in two children after varicella vaccination. Intradermal testing with gelatin yielded a wheal and flare reaction in both children. We conclude that children known to be allergic to gelatin should not receive Oka/Merck varicella vaccine (VARIVAX).

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-17-producing γδT (γδT17) cells mediate inflammatory responses in barrier tissues. Dysregulated γδT17 cell activation can lead to the overproduction of IL-17 and IL-22 and the development of inflammatory diseases, including psoriasis.
