The objective of the current study was to investigate characteristics of Erysipelothrix spp. from slaughter condemnations. Specimens from 70 carcasses with lesions suspect for swine erysipelas were collected at an abattoir in Iowa from October 2007 to February 2009. Erysipelothrix spp. were isolated from 59 of 70 carcasses (84.3%). The author, acknowledging the reality of homeless persons in most communities, explores the meanings and dynamics of homelessness, and the need to recognize the variety of participants needing to be recognized in appreciating the complexity of this segment of society. He raises the issue of how pastoral caregivers become involved in providing authentic care to this sub-culture and offers examples from his own experiences as a volunteer chaplain in the Salvation Army Corps.

Fifty-four ill or nonproductive lemmings (Dicrostonyx spp.) were evaluated for signs, lesions and causes of disease for 5 yr in a domestic colony. Parasitic granulomas caused by Encephalitozoon cuniculi were the most common finding and were seen in 22 lemmings. Blood for serologic examination and kidneys for bacteriologic cultural examination were collected from 204 cows slaughtered in an Iowa packing plant during August to October 1981. By the microscopic agglutination test on the 200 serum samples which were collected, 29 (14.5%) were positive--22 samples (10.8%) had agglutinin titers to hardjo, 4 (2%) to pomona, and 5 (2.5%) to other serovars. We performed a clinical study and linkage analysis on 278 subjects (66 affected) belonging to eight families with X-linked dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) neuropathy. This form affects 11.8% of CMT patients in Iowa. Motor nerve conduction velocities (MNCVs) were significantly slowed consistent with type 1 CMT. Upper femoral osteotomy is a recognised treatment for selected patients with Perthes' disease. The results of this procedure were investigated at skeletal maturity in 44 patients (48 hips). The indication for operation was Catterall group II, III, and IV hips with 'head-at-risk' signs.
