Changing Trends in Bladder Cancer Epidemiology in the Israeli Population: 1996-2016.

BACKGROUND: There is a rising incidence of bladder cancer (BC) in Israel and worldwide. BC is currently the fourth most common cancer in Israeli males. There are large variations in the incidence of BC observed in different populations, both in Israel and worldwide. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the time trends and epidemiologic profile of BC in Israel regarding various population demographics. METHODS: All cases of BC reported to the Israeli National Cancer Registry between 1996 and 2016 were included. We calculated age standardized rates for BC. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to stud

Ethnic Differences in Support for Restorative Justice in Sexual Abuse Cases: The Role of Offense Severity and Malleability Beliefs.

This study explores public attitudes toward restorative justice (RJ) in cases of intrafamilial and extrafamilial sexual abuse within the Israeli multiethnic society. The research investigates the role of perceived offense severity and malleability beliefs, moderated by ethnic identity. Findings reveal that Jewish participants perceive intrafamilial offenses as more severe and show lower support for RJ, mediated by malleability beliefs. In contrast, Arab participants do not differentiate between intra- and extrafamilial offenses in terms of severity, and their support for RJ is less influenced

Genetic education and peer support among Ashkenazi Jewish women in the United States at risk for and surviving with breast cancer.

Ashkenazi Jewish women are at significantly increased risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) due to the high prevalence of BRCA founder variants. Community-based organizations (CBOs) offer culturally tailored support through programs like peer support and genetic education, but limited research has explored how these services are offered and utilized in this population. Therefore, we conducted a secondary analysis of post-program survey data from N = 1054 women served by a national cancer support organization. Among high-risk Ashkenazi Jewish women (N = 429), we examined patterns

Esophageal Atresia with Tracheoesophageal Fistula Is Associated with Consanguinity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between nonsyndromic esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) and consanguinity. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study comparing the incidence of EA-TEF between a low-consanguineous Jewish population and a high-consanguineous Bedouin population. All patients were treated at Soroka University Medical Center, the only tertiary medical center in southern Israel. RESULTS: From 2000 to 2022, 579 130 children were born in southern Israel, and 386 915 (66.8%) were Jewish, and 192 215 were Bedouin Muslims. A total of 96 patients were diagnosed wi

Double heterozygosity for TP53 and BRCA1 mutations: clinical implications in populations with founder mutations.

PURPOSE: The co-occurrence or double heterozygosity of pathogenic/likely pathogenic sequence variants (P/LPSVs) in major cancer susceptibility genes has rarely been reported. Such co-occurrence raises the issues of accurate genetic counseling, preferred recommended surveillance scheme, and the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). METHODS: A clinical report of an Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) family with co occurrence of two PSVs in BRCA1 and TP53 and a literature search. RESULTS: In an AJ family with a substantial history of cancer limited to the maternal side, two siblings co-harbored TP

The Jewish Pathologist Carl Julius Rothberger (1871-1945) and the gradual deprivation of his rights in the Third Reich.

The Jewish pathologist Carl Julius Rothberger (1871-1945) is undoubtedly one of the most important representatives of his field. His studies on atrial fibrillation, the bundle branch block and arrhythmia perpetua in particular secured him a place in medical history. Rothberger also gave the name to an agar used to prove the neutral red reduction of salmonella (Rothberger-Scheffler agar). While Rothberger's name is well known in pathology, his biography and his experiences of stigmatization as a Jewish university lecturer have received little attention. The latter are therefore the focus of thi

Hoarding among Jewish Holocaust Survivors: Moving Toward a Theoretical Model.

BACKGROUND: Previously described as a subcategory of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), hoarding disorder was added to the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) as a stand-alone diagnosis for the first time. The first formal research in the 1990s surprisingly found no connection between material deprivation early in life and hoarding; however, later studies linked early traumatic life experiences with hoarding. Subsequent familial studies demonstrated a genetic predisposition for hoarding. Emerging evidence suggests a link between a post-traumatic stress disorde

Facing the Guilt and Commemorating the Victims: German Radiology and Radiation Oncology During National Socialism.

Whereas the scientific community is aware of atrocities committed by medical doctors like Mengele, the specifics of radiology and radiation oncology during National Socialism remain largely unknown. Starting in 2010, the German Radiology Association and the German Association of Radiation Oncology coordinated a national project looking into original archival material. A national committee convened in 2013 to discuss the project's findings, which were also the subject of a symposium at the University of Tuebingen in 2016 on radiology under National Socialism. The project identified approximatel

Risk factors for transmission of mumps in a highly vaccinated population in Orange County, NY, 2009-2010.

BACKGROUND: In 2009-2010, we investigated a mumps outbreak among a highly vaccinated Orthodox Jewish population in a village in Orange County, NY, to identify risk factors associated with mumps transmission among persons with 2 doses of mumps-containing vaccine. METHODS: Demographic and epidemiologic characteristics were collected on students in grades 6-12 in 3 schools. A mumps case was defined as a student, who self-reported parotitis, orchitis, jaw swelling and/or a mumps-related complication or whose mumps illness was reported to the Orange County Health Department during September 1, 200

Child maltreatment reports in Israel: the intersection between community socioeconomic characteristics and ethnicity.

The authors examined the relationship between community characteristics and child maltreatment reports in Israel, comparing Jewish and Arab localities both in terms of maltreatment reports and the responses of the social services to these reports. Administrative data were obtained from the protective services and the Central Bureau of Statistics for 231 local authorities in Israel (covering 98% of children in Israel). Jewish communities showed significantly more reports of sexual abuse and physical abuse than Arab communities. Reporting rates also showed different associations with socioeconom

A review of the oro-dento-facial characteristics of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III (familial dysautonomia).

The oro-dento-facial features and dysfunction of children with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III, known as familial dysautonomia or Riley-Day syndrome, was first described in the scientific literature in 1949. They include dental trauma; dental and soft tissue self-mutilation; normal dental age; normal sequence and timing of eruption and exfoliation of teeth; smaller tooth size; different and disproportional tooth components; normal alveolar bone height; small jaws, mild crowding, and malocclusions. These persons have craniofacial morphology that is different from accepted n

Wolman disease (LIPA p.G87V) genotype frequency in people of Iranian-Jewish ancestry.

Wolman disease (WD) is a rare inherited condition caused by lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) deficiency first described in Iranian-Jewish (IJ) children. Newborns with WD are healthy and active, but soon the infant develops symptoms of severe malnutrition in the first few months of life, and often dies before the age of 1 year. Harmful amounts of lipids accumulate in the spleen, liver, bone marrow, intestine, adrenal glands, and lymph nodes. Although worldwide incidence is estimated at 1/350,000 newborns, WD occurs at higher than expected frequency in the IJ community of the Los Angeles area. As a v

The Anatomische Gesellschaft and National Socialism - A preliminary analysis based on the society proceedings.

The Anatomische Gesellschaft (AG) is an international society for the anatomical sciences and at the same time the main organising body for German anatomists. This study analyses how the AG went through the years of National Socialism. As the society does not possess archival material from that time, the analysis is mainly based on the society proceedings (Verhandlungen der Anatomischen Gesellschaft) published annually after each meeting from 1934 to 1939 and again in 1950. During the period of National Socialism, the AG kept its international status against demands to make it a purely German

Changing sites of colorectal cancer in the Israeli Jewish ethnic populations and its clinical implications.

Countries at risk for colorectal cancer noted an increase in right-sided colorectal cancer. We examined this in the Israeli Jewish populatio … sian immigrants arriving after 1990. In conclusion, there is a trend for right colorectal cancer in Jews aged > or =65 years. The proportion and amount of colorectal cancer increased most significantly in older women, which was partially explained by their increasing numbers and by colorectal cancer occurring in recent immigrants from Russia, who were …

Intrafamilial heterogeneity of movement disorders: report of three cases in one family.

We report three members of a single family with an apparently autosomal dominant, nonparoxysmal, hyperkinetic movement disorder with onset in adolescence. The proband, a 56-year-old woman, manifested dystonia, tremor and myoclonus; one of her daughters exhibited myoclonus with tremor, and the other demonstrated myoclonus with chorea later accompanied by tremor and dystonia. The slowly progressive but not debilitating symptoms were restricted to the head, arms and hands and were only moderately affected by alcohol. Laboratory investigations failed to identify any abnormality, and linkage analys

Jewish religion and risk of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The excess risk of breast cancer among Jewish women has been attributed to the effects of difference in lifestyle and reproductive patterns, but there is now evidence that Jewish women may be more likely than other women to inherit mutations in breast-cancer genes. We investigated whether any excessive risk among Jewish women is confined to those with a family history of breast cancer. METHODS: We assessed the effect of Jewish religion on breast cancer in a large population-based case-control study (6611 women with breast cancer and 9026 controls) in USA. Participants were given t

Hereditary tyrosinaemia type II in a consanguineous Ashkenazi Jewish family: intrafamilial variation in phenotype; absence of parental phenotype effects on the fetus.

We describe an Ashkenazi Jewish family in which two adults, offspring of consanguineous parents, have persistent hypertyrosinaemia (770-1110 mumol/L; normal less than 110 mumol/L). The metabolic disorder in this family is apparently due to hepatic cytosolic tyrosine aminotransferase deficiency (hereditary tyrosinaemia, type II; McKusick, 276600), because it is associated with the oculocutaneous manifestations of Richner-Hanhart syndrome. The association of this syndrome with hereditary tyrosinaemia type II is presumed to be constant. It is not in this family. The affected female sib (age 41 ye
