Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinomas (UTUC) account for 5-10% of all transitional cells neoplasms. Kidney-sparing treatment should be considered for low grade (LG) UTUC and for imperative conditions. Percutaneous approach may have a role in LG tumors not manageable endoscopically. Tumor seeding along nephrostomy track is a rare report. We describe the case of a 73-year-old male, with a history of high-grade UC of the left renal pelvis. A CT scan showed the thickening of left renal pelvic wall, and percutaneous biopsy was performed. The patient underwent laparoscopic left nephroureterectom

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas), make up a family of extremely rare mesenchymal neoplasms, with characteristic morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular findings. Malignant PEComas and gastrointestinal epithelioid angiomyolipoma (E-AML) are especially rare. To the best of our knowledge E-AML have not been found in the breast. The difficulty in determining what constitutes optimal therapy for PEComas, owing to the sparse literature available, led us to report this rare case.
METHODS: We report a case of a 44-year-old woman, with a family history of multiple en

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation (XGI) is a rare, idiopathic process in which lipid-laden histiocytes are deposited at various locations in the body. Although XGI has been reported to occur in various organs such as the gallbladder, kidney, bone, stomach, colon, appendix, lymph nodes, urachus, and urinary bladder and in soft tissues, xanthogranulomatous pancreatitis (XGP) is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of XGP occurring in a 70-yr-old woman, who presented with abdominal pain for several months. On physical examination, mild epigastric tenderness was noted. Abdomen CT scan revealed

INTRODUCTION: Various common malignant neoplasms (ie, liver, kidney, stomach, and breast) have been reported to embolize to the pulmonary arterial system. This uncommon occurrence can also result from metastatic sarcoma. We report 3 cases--2 chondrosarcomas and 1 osteosarcoma-associated with intravascular metastases to the pulmonary vasculature and discuss the clinical presentation and differentiating radiologic features on computed tomography (CT).
DISCUSSION: Intravascular pulmonary tumour emboli may present with nonspecific respiratory symptoms or remain completely asymptomatic, and theref

Neurological complications whether due to the uremic state or its treatment, contribute largely to the morbidity and mortality in patients with renal failure. Despite continuous therapeutic advances, many neurological complications of uremia, like uremic encephalopathy, atherosclerosis, neuropathy and myopathy fail to fully respond to dialysis. Moreover, dialytic therapy or kidney transplantation may even induce neurological complications. Dialysis can directly or indirectly be associated with dialysis dementia, dysequilibrium syndrome, aggravation of atherosclerosis, cerebrovascular accidents

Although uterine leiomyomas represent one of the most common neoplasms in adult women, their pathogenesis remains poorly understood. A cDNA microarray analysis was performed to search for candidate genes expressed to a greater degree in leiomyoma compared with matched myometrium. A total of 15 candidate genes was obtained; neuron-specific protein PEP-19 (Purkinje cell protein 4; PCP 4) exhibited a striking difference in expression between leiomyoma and myometrium. Although PEP-19 expression has been reported exclusively in the central nervous system, the present study demonstrated that PEP-19

Chronic cervical diseases belong to the category of precancerous diseases whose treatment is important in preventing cervical cancer. 135 cases were treated with Sanpin preparations therapy after exclusion of heart, liver, kidney and cancerous diseases. After the treatment of 2-3 months, 133 cases were cured. Two cases have not finished their treatment courses and so have been excluded from the study. Among them, 110 have been followed up for 1 to 11 years. All of the patients with pretreatmental hypertrophic cervices had normal sizes after the treatment. The cure rate of cervical erosion was

Secretogranin II is a very acidic, tyrosine-sulfated protein found in secretory granules of cells belonging to the diffuse neuroendocrine system. It gained more general importance recently as a universal immunohistochemical marker for endocrine neoplasms. Sequence information was obtained from secretogranin II isolated from bovine anterior pituitaries, allowing the isolation of cDNA clones and deduction of its primary structure. Bovine secretogranin II is a 586-amino acid protein of 67,455 Da which is preceded by a signal peptide of 27 residues and contains 9 pairs of basic amino acids in its

The risk of second malignancies was evaluated in all men in metropolitan Atlanta who were initially diagnosed as having prostate cancer between January 1, 1975 and December 31, 1982. The cohort of 3675 men was observed through the end of calendar year 1984, yielding a total of 11,916 man-years of observation. Within this population 220 second cancers were diagnosed at sites other than the prostate as compared with 181.2 cancers expected based upon incidence rates for the local general population. Excesses of second malignancies were found in the urethra, kidney and bladder, as well as for mela

Cancer-to-cancer metastasis is an exceptionally rare phenomenon, with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) being the most commonly reported recipient tumor. According to the criteria established by Campbell et al, true cancer-to-cancer metastasis requires evidence of two distinct primary neoplasms and histologic confirmation of metastatic infiltration from one tumor into the other. Breast carcinoma metastasizing to clear cell renal cell carcinoma (clear cell RCC) is particularly uncommon, with only eight living patients reported to date. We report a rare instance of pleomorphic lobular breast carcinoma

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by perivascular epithelioid cells. PEComas include angiomyolipoma (AML) of the kidney, clear-cell sugar tumor (CCST), lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and clear-cell tumors of other anatomical locations. PEComas other than AML, CCST and LAM are very rare tumors that have been referred to as PEComa-not otherwise specified (PEComa-NOS). Especially, colorectal PEComa-NOS remains very rare. A 15-year-old girl underwent a colonoscopy due to hematochezia, thus revealing a 30 mm intramural mass in the upper rect

INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell neoplasms (PCNs) are a rare type of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD). Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare type of PCN, and is infrequently located in the retroperitoneum. According to the current literature, heart transplant recipients are considered at intermediate risk for developing PTLD.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 70-year-old patient with a history of heart transplantation, who was admitted to the hospital with back pain and swelling of the left lower limb. Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal mass involving the left kidney,

Cisplatin (CP) is a chemotherapy drug widely prescribed to treat various neoplasms. Although fundamental for the therapeutic action of the drug, its cytotoxic mechanisms trigger adverse effects in several tissues, such as the kidney, liver, and heart, which limit its clinical use. In this sense, studies point to an essential role of damage to nuclear and mitochondrial DNA associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in the pathophysiology of tissue injuries. Due to the limitation of effective preventive and therapeutic measures against CP-induced toxicity, new strategies with

BACKGROUND: Currently, few literature reports document cases of decoy cells in the urine of umbilical cord blood transplant patients. The majority of the literature indicates that decoy cells are frequently identified in the urine of kidney transplant recipients.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a patient with Myelodysplastic Neoplasms featuring a complex karyotype who underwent umbilical cord blood transplantation. Postoperative urinary cytology revealed decoy cells, and subsequent BK virus nucleic acid testing was positive. However, the routine use of antiviral drugs by the phy

Renal cell carcinoma morbidity grows in most of countries. All over the world 200,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, and approximately 102,000 patients die of this disease, with an incidence of nearly nine cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year. That's why, renal cell carcinoma is a challenging field in the current oncology research. Among urologic tumors, renal cell carcinoma ranks third in terms of incidence after prostate carcinoma and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 3% of adult malignancies and 90-95% of neoplasms arising fro

Germ cell tumours (GCT) are the most common testicular neoplasms, seen mainly in young adults. Rarely they can affect extragonadal tissues, either as primary tumours or as metastases, most commonly to retroperitoneal lymph nodes. A 'burned-out' testicular tumour is a metastatic GCT with a relatively occult primary testicular tumour, which has histologically spontaneously regressed. We report a case of a 26-year-old man who presented with an acute history of lower back pain and leg swelling. CT demonstrated a large retroperitoneal soft tissue mass causing right-sided hydronephrosis with inferio

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors have emerged as powerful tools to treat malignant neoplasms and ocular diseases by virtue of their ability to inhibit angiogenesis. Recent data indicate that intravitreal injections of VEGF inhibitors can lead to significant systemic absorption as well as a measurable reduction of plasma VEGF activity. There is increasing evidence showing that vitreal absorption of these drugs is associated with cases of accelerated hypertension, worsening proteinuria, glomerular disease, thrombotic microangiopathy, and possible chronic renal function declin

Hypercobalaminemia (high serum vitamin B12 levels) is a frequent and underestimated anomaly. Clinically, it can be paradoxically accompanied by signs of deficiency, reflecting a functional deficiency linked to qualitative abnormalities, which are related to defects in tissue uptake and action of vitamin B12. The aetiological profile of high serum cobalamin predominantly encompasses severe disease entities for which early diagnosis is critical for prognosis. These entities are essentially comprised of solid neoplasms, haematological malignancies and liver and kidney diseases. This review reflec
