Background and Objectives: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is influenced by various causes, including thyroid diseases. For example, hypothyroidism and thyroid autoimmunity can damage the inner ear through hormonal, immune, and vascular mechanisms. Vestibular disorders like Ménière's disease (MD) and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) also show possible associations with thyroid dysfunction. Materials and Methods: A review following PRISMA guidelines searched PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies linking thyroid disorders with inner ear dysfunction. Results: Out of 985 scre

The auditory (cochlear) labyrinth, the cochlea, holds the hearing sensory receptors. The vestibular labyrinth contains the sensory receptors for balance, which lie in the three semicircular canals and in the otolithic organs (the saccule and utricle). Pure tone audiometry and brain stem evoked audiometry can help to differentiate a peripheral cochlear disorder from central lesion. The type of nystagmus, severity of postural instability, and neurological evaluation can help to differentiate a peripheral vestibular disorder from a central vestibular lesion. The decision whether to perform an app

OBJECTIVES: This is a qualitative study to explore the utility of gray-scale inversion or the "invert" function of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans in the diagnosis of temporal bone anatomy and pathology.
METHODS: This is a case series describing an innovative application of an existing image processing tool to visualize temporal bone anatomy and pathology. Illustrative patients at a tertiary referral center with otologic symptoms and findings leading to HRCT scans of the temporal bone were included. Diagnostic HRCT scans were evaluated utilizing the gray-scale inversion funct

Inner ear pathology was studied in adult rats with lipoid nephrosis induced by puromycin aminonucleoside. Although no abnormality was observed in auditory brain-stem responses, significant changes were noted in the stria vascularis. The most striking observation was that intermediate cells were markedly swelled, there-by pressing adjacent marginal cells. Severely affected marginal cells have vacuoles and increased lysosomes and protruded toward the endolymphatic space. The organ of Corti remained virtually intact. Although the vestibular maculae were relatively normal, type I hair cells in the

The effectiveness of the antiviral agent ganciclovir (9-[1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl]guanine) against guinea pig cytomegalovirus was tested in vitro in guinea pig embryonic fibroblasts and in vivo in an experimental guinea pig cytomegalovirus labyrinthitis model. In vitro, ganciclovir completely prevented guinea pig cytomegalovirus infection of guinea pig embryonic fibroblasts at concentrations above 32.6 micrograms/ml. In vivo, antibody-negative animals had an average 17-dB elevation in their auditory nerve compound action potential thresholds (P less than 0.01, t test) and showed signs bil

Several consistent medical problems have been encountered by astronauts during space flights. These include vestibular dysfunction, weight loss, increase in height, upward fluid shift, anemia, cardiovascular deconditioning, muscle atrophy, and bone loss. Almost all of these alterations can be attributed to the absence of gravitational force. Most are adaptive in nature and therefore reversible, but readaptation after returning to earth may cause further problems (e.g., in the case of vestibular dysfunction). The most recalcitrant and disturbing of all these problems is the relentless bone loss

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the gram-negative bacterial rod which is often isolated from chronic aural discharge. This microorganism may also cause necrotizing infection of the external auditory canal in certain patients with impaired host-defense mechanisms. Involvement of the inner ear by this microbe is extremely rare. In this communication, we report a case of pseudomonas labyrinthitis which resulted from traumatic middle ear injury. Infection produced massive granulations and extensive bone destruction of the otic capsule. This case shows that while P.aeruginosa is usually an avirulent oppo

The effects of the "vestibular sedative" drug Flunarizine upon the oculomotor functions of pursuit and voluntary saccades and upon the vestibular response (to rotational stimuli) were assessed in twenty volunteer subjects. The study was then extended to three patients with chronic imbalance of central origin who had reported a beneficial symptomatic response to the drug. Three of the volunteer subjects were found to have a directional preponderance (presumed to arise from peripheral dysfunction). In the remaining seventeen normal subjects Flunarizine was found to reduce the amplitudes of fast

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infects 1 to 2 percent of liveborn infants in the United States and causes varying degrees of perceptive hearing loss. There are eight reported pathologic studies of temporal bones in CMV-infected neonates. Viral replication occurs in nonsensory endolabyrinthine epithelium, but viral antigen is also found in the organ of Corti and spiral ganglion neurons, and CMV has been cultured from perilymph. Further clinicopathologic correlation is frustrated, since the inner ear cannot be biopsied during life, and the number of temporal bones available for study is limited, owing to

One hundred twenty-one patients were identified who presented to an emergency room with the complaint of dizziness. Peripheral vestibular disease (24 percent of patients) was the most common cause of dizziness, but the cause remained unknown at follow-up after six months in 37 percent of the patients. The history and physical examination were sufficient for diagnosis in 83 percent of patients in whom a diagnosis could be made. Diagnostic tests, such as complete blood counts (four patients) and chest roentgenograms (four patients), provided crucial information in some cases. At the time of foll

Interpretation of vestibular test results derived from rotational and other electronystagmography studies often give confusing diagnostic and prognostic information. We have reviewed 90 consecutive patients seen in the Vestibular Clinic at the University of Texas Medical Branch comparing the accuracy of the damped torsion swing test (DTS) with a conventional vestibular test battery (VTB) to predict vestibular function abnormality (peripheral or central). These predictions were compared with vestibular diagnoses obtained by long-term follow-up (24-36 months). VTB and DTS results were evaluated

The density of vestibular hair cells and the number of neurons in Scarpa's ganglion were estimated for 11 temporal bones with endolymphatic hydrops. The ten subjects from which these bones were taken all exhibited decreased caloric response (when tested), fluctuating hearing loss, and episodic vertigo. The degeneration of vestibular sense organs was found within the "normal" range for all except one case, which showed total degeneration of the posterior crista ampullaris. Ganglion cell counts in all cases were low. In three of the ten subjects, counts fell below the lowest values seen in a sam

Disease or damage of the vestibular sense organs cause a range of distressing symptoms and functional problems that could include loss of balance, gaze instability, disorientation, and dizziness. A novel computer-based rehabilitation system with therapeutic gaming application has been developed. This method allows different gaze and head movement exercises to be coupled to a wide range of inexpensive, commercial computer games. It can be used in standing, and thus graded balance demands using a sponge pad can be incorporated into the program. A case series pre- and postintervention study was c
