Four groups of 5 male and 5 female rats were dosed i.p. with 0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.30 mmol Pb2+/kg as neutral acetate. A minimal kidney damage shown by an increased urinary GGt was only observed in males at the highest dose. In all animals and for all doses natriuria was significantly decreased on the first day (from the 4th hour). Such disturbances evoke mild tubular disturbances but glomerular disturbances may also be involved.

Lead represents a significant environmental hazard to pregnant women and their offspring. Exposure to high environmental levels of lead has been associated with spontaneous abortion, premature rupture of fetal membranes (PROM), and preterm delivery. The relationship between lower exposures and obstetric complications is unknown. The concentration of lead in the blood was measured in 635 specimens of umbilical cord blood collected at delivery. No relationship was found between concentrations of lead in cord blood and the incidence of PROM, preterm delivery, preeclampsia, or meconium staining. M…

Lead intoxication (plumbism) from retained bullets has rarely been reported but may be fatal if unrecognized. Bullets lodged within joint spaces or pseudocysts are more likely to develop this complication, although patients with retained missiles in other locations may also be at risk. Subtle findings such as the occurrence of unexplained anemia, abdominal colic, nephropathy, or neurologic deterioration in patients with retained missiles may suggest consideration of plumbism. An intercurrent metabolic stress such as infection, endocrinopathy, or alcoholism may be a precipitating factor. Among …

Blood samples were obtained during a lead screening program from 100 children aged 1-6 years in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to determine whether there was any association between specific forms of pica and infection with Toxocara canis, the principal cause of visceral larva migrans in the United States, or elevated blood lead levels. Significant associations were found between: 1) feces, soil, or grass pica and Toxocara infection; 2) paint or plaster pica and elevated blood lead; and 3) dog ownership and Toxocara infection. These findings suggest that an accurate pica history may be useful…

A study of workers exposed to low levels of lead as impurities in aluminum (as low as 0.07%) shows a statistically significant difference in blood and urine lead levels as compared with a control group. In addition, alterations in precursors of heme were demonstrated as reflected in elevated levels of urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid and erythrocyte protoporphyrin IX. This study has implications for workers who are exposed to metals with low concentrations of lead (less than 1%) since this exposure tends to go unnoticed both by the workers, even when symptoms are present, and by physicians wh…

Several heavy metals have direct calcifying effects in connective tissues; most notable among them is lead (Pb), whether administered topically (1) or systemically with local injury (2). The mechanisms of metal-induced soft tissue calcification have been studied by injecting salts of known in vitro calcifying potential into subcutaneous connective tissue (3); of the metals used, only lead and holmium produced an early accumulation of minerals on collagen in vivo. Lead is also claimed to accelerate bone healing in the rabbit leg with no toxic effects (4). Lead-loaded ion-exchange resin beads, i…

Lead (200 milligrams per kilogram) was administered daily by intubation to Long-Evans rats on days 3 through 30 of life. Thirty to 180 days after cessation of lead administration, the lead-treated rats were consistently more polydipsic after lithium administration (2 millimoles per kilogram per day) than were pair-treated controls. Lithium increased the plasma renin activity equally in both the lead treated and the control groups. These data are evidence that there may be permanent neural changes induced by postnatal exposure to lead that are manifested by pharmacological challenge with lithiu…

Lead encephalopathy was produced in neonatal Long-Evans rats by administering daily doses of lead acetate (600 milligrams of lead acetate/kilogram of body weight) through an esophageal catheter. Experimental rat pups showed behavioral changes, failed to gain weight at the same rate as controls, developed a paraplegia and died by 15 days of age. Lead analysis showed very high blood and tissue lead levels. Sequential histopathologic changes were studied in the cerebellum with observations also made in the choroid plexus, cerebral cortex and corpus striatum. Emphasis was placed on the cerebellum …

Rhesus monkeys were reared on diets designed to produce blood lead concentrations of 14 (untreated), 55, or 85 micrograms per 100 milliliters for the first year of life. Eighteen months later, blood lead levels were normal in all animals. At this time, however, visual discrimination performance in the 85-microgram group was impaired under dim light relative both to their own performance under bright light and to the performance of the other groups under all light levels used. We interpret these results to reflect a deleterious, enduring impairment of scotopic visual function (night blindness) …

Statistical data of a public insurance office of West Germany show a drastic increase of the carriage impairments in juveniles. A plausible explanation of this phenomenon is presented by the lead quantities in auto exhaust. Present levels of environmentall lead produce a measurable biochemical alteration in the population of industrialized countries (inhibition of the activity of the enzyme ALAD). By disturbing the synthesis of nucleics acids and porteins lead impairs fundamental processes of life. Epidemiological and biochemical evidence for an influence of lead on the vertebral column and it…

AIMS: The decision to abandon or extract superfluous leads remains controversial. We sought to compare procedural outcome of patients with and without abandoned leads undergoing transvenous lead extraction (TLE).
METHODS AND RESULTS: An analysis of the ESC-EHRA European Lead Extraction ConTRolled ELECTRa registry was conducted. Patients were stratified into two groups based on the presence (Group 1) or absence (Group 2) of abandoned leads at the time for extraction. Out of 3508 TLE procedures, 422 patients (12.0%) had abandoned leads (Group 1). Group 1 patients were older and more likely to h…
