Dynamic balance ability in single-leg drop jump landing in junior female athletes after shin splints-assessment from a preventive perspective.

[Purpose] To develop assessment/rehabilitation indices for prevention of chronic and recurrent shin splint injuries among sport athletes, we analyzed the plantar center of pressure trajectories after drop-jump landing on one leg, and compared the foot function on the injured and healthy sides. [Participants and Methods] The participants were 10 female athletes who received consultation at our facility due to shin splints of the lower leg. The exercise task was the "single-leg drop jump landing test", in which the participants maintained a static posture on one leg for 8 s after landing. Using

Falling as a strategy to decrease knee loading during landings: Implications for ACL injury prevention.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often occur when individuals land primarily on a single leg. Falling has been proposed as a potential strategy to decrease knee loading during landings. The purpose of this study was to compare impact forces, knee angles, and knee moments during natural landings, soft landings, and landings followed by falling after forward and vertical jumps, each under single or double-leg conditions. Sixteen male and sixteen female participants (age: 22.0 ± 2.9 years) completed each landing condition while kinematics and ground reaction forces were collected. In the

Assimilation of virtual legs and perception of floor texture by complete paraplegic patients receiving artificial tactile feedback.

Spinal cord injuries disrupt bidirectional communication between the patient's brain and body. Here, we demonstrate a new approach for reproducing lower limb somatosensory feedback in paraplegics by remapping missing leg/foot tactile sensations onto the skin of patients' forearms. A portable haptic display was tested in eight patients in a setup where the lower limbs were simulated using immersive virtual reality (VR). For six out of eight patients, the haptic display induced the realistic illusion of walking on three different types of floor surfaces: beach sand, a paved street or grass. Addi

[Degloving injuries of the lower limb].

Although seldom dangerous to life, these degloving injuries are all potentially infected and, unless treated as acute surgical emergencies, inevitably lead to serious complications. Diagnostic is done according to a standardized protocol, which eventually must be integrated in the standard polytrauma management. Multidisciplinary (orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, physiotherapy) defect management is of utmost importance and requires an "integrated therapy concept". The success or failure of primary treatment of degloving injuries is determined by an adequate primary care includ

Findings from the preparticipation athletic examination and athletic injuries.

This study investigated the relationships between the findings from a standardized preparticipation athletic examination, the sport played, … with previous ankle injuries and previous injuries requiring medical treatment. Both arm and other leg injuries were associated with previous fractures. Male athletes with either abnormal knee or ankle findings from the physical examination were more likely to injure the knee or ankle, respectively. However, the sensitivities and positive predictive values of …

Injury incidence in NCAA men's sports during 2019/20-2021/22: findings from the injury surveillance program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's sports feature elite athletes, and systematic injury surveillance efforts are required to inform injury risk mitigation strategies in this population. We describe the epidemiology of injuries in this population during the COVID-19-impacted 2019/20-2021/22 academic years. We examined inju distributions by sport, event type, body part, diagnosis, and mechanism of injury, and used a Bayesian negative binomial modelling framework to estimate injury incidence rates (per 1,000 athlete-exposures [AEs]). A total of 21,195 injuries were reported acr

Injury and Illness Depicted in Running-Related Films.

The perception that children and adolescents have of injury and illness may be influenced by their depiction in sport-related films. The objective of this study was to determine the depiction of injury and illness in a select number of running-related films. A sample of 31 running-related films were analyzed, with a total of 77 injuries/illnesses depicted. The most common injuries/illnesses depicted were categorized as exertional heat exhaustion/stroke (26%), lower leg muscle cramps/not heat related (12%), ankle sprain (9%), knee ligamentous/meniscus injury (6%), exercise-associated collapse/n

Vertical shear injuries: is there a relationship between residual displacement and functional outcome?

BACKGROUND: Residual vertical displacement is often cited as being related to poor outcome in patients with pelvic injuries. This study attempts to clarify the relationship between residual vertical displacement and functional outcome. METHODS: From 1982 to 1989, over 500 patients with pelvic ring injuries were treated at two Level I trauma centers. Thirty-three patients with vertical shear (Tile C) fractures and residual displacement (2-52 mm) were evaluated. Outcomes were quantified by using SF-36 Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the Iowa Pelvic Score (IPS). RESULTS: There was no corre

Nonfatal logging-related injuries in West Virginia.

A survey was conducted via mail among West Virginia certified loggers to determine the number of nonfatal, logging-related injuries received during the past 12 months that required medical attention or restricted job ability. Loggers were asked to describe injuries, safety training, and protective equipment use. Thirty percent (546/1816) responded to the survey, and 9% (42/481) of those directly involved in logging operations reported injuries. Leading cause of injury was being struck by a falling tree or limb (29%); leading body parts injured were the leg/knee/hip (31%); and the most common t

Intramedullary nailing combined with cerclage wiring in the treatment of fractures of the femoral shaft.

One hundred sixty-seven femoral shaft fractures were treated with open intramedullary nailing and cerclage wires. Complications requiring surgical reintervention developed in 11 patients (6.6%). Delayed union or nonunion in five patients (3%), deep infection in four patients (2.4%), or unstable fixation in two patients (1.2%) required one or more additional procedures to achieve union. The time to weight-bearing averaged 32 days in patients with isolated injuries and 62 days in patients with associated injuries. One hundred forty-five patients were followed until fracture union occurred. Rotat

Staged limb salvage of a Gustilo-Anderson type IIIC open distal tibial gunshot fracture using cross-leg pedicle flap and delayed intramedullary nailing with bone grafting: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gunshot injuries to the lower limb can cause severe damage to both bone and soft tissues, particularly when the injury occurs at close range. Open fractures of the tibia are especially difficult to manage because of the limited soft-tissue coverage and the high risk of infection, non-union, and other complications. Gustilo-Anderson type IIIC fractures represent the most severe form, as they involve arterial injury that requires urgent repair. Successful limb salvage depends on early debridement, restoration of blood flow, stable fixation, and reliable soft-tissue c

Development and verification of a protocol to quantify hip joint kinematics: an evaluation of ice hockey goaltender pads on hip motion.

BACKGROUND: The butterfly save technique is commonly used by ice hockey goaltenders and has recently been identified as a potential mechanism for hip joint injuries due to the extreme body positions involved. Unfortunately, commonly used kinematic marker sets that determine these body positions are heavily influenced by skin motion artifact and are obscured by protective equipment, making it difficult to obtain reliable measures of hip motion. PURPOSE: To create a new kinematic protocol that could be used when protective equipment prevents typical marker placements and to use this protocol to

Imaging Patterns in MRI in Recent Bone Injuries Following Negative or Inconclusive Plain Radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Few bony injuries and most soft tissue injuries cannot be detected on plain radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect such occult bony injuries due to signal changes in bone marrow. In addition to excluding serious bony injuries, it can also identify tendon, ligament, cartilage and other soft tissue injuries and thus help in localizing the cause of morbidity. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the MRI imaging patterns in recent bone injuries (less than 4 weeks) following negative or inconclusive plain radiographs. To determine the role of MRI in recent fractures. RE

Chemical radiculitis.

The theory of chemical radiculitis had been put forward about 30 years ago, but as yet it has not been proved by clinical studies. The aim of the current studies was to determine whether the annular tear of a painful disc proved by discography is the cause of radiating leg pain (radiculopathy) in patients with discogenic low back pain. Forty-two patients with discogenic low back pain at single disc level with concomitant radiating leg pain were studied in order to analyse the relationship between site of annular tear and side of radiating leg pain. Electromyogram and motor nerve conduction vel

Conus medullaris and cauda equina syndrome as a result of traumatic injuries: management principles.

Conus medullaris syndrome (CMS) and cauda equina syndrome (CES) are complex neurological disorders that can be manifested through a variety of symptoms. Patients may present with back pain, unilateral or bilateral leg pain, paresthesias and weakness, perineum or saddle anesthesia, and rectal and/or urinary incontinence or dysfunction. Although patients typically present with acute disc herniations, traumatic injuries at the thoracolumbar junction at the terminal portion of the spinal cord and cauda equina are also common. Unfortunately, a precise understanding of the pathophysiology and optima
