Ambient sulfur dioxide and hospital expenditures and length of hospital stay for respiratory diseases: A multicity study in China.

BACKGROUND: Ambient sulfur dioxide (SO2) has been associated with morbidity and mortality of respiratory diseases, however, its effect on length of hospital stays (LOS) and cost for these diagnoses remain unclear. METHODS: We collected hospital admission information for respiratory diseases from all 11 cities in the Shanxi Province of China during 2017-2019. We assessed individual-level exposure by using an inverse distance weighting approach based on geocoded residential addresses. A generalized additive model was built to delineate city-specific effects of SO2 on hospitalization, hospital e

Impact of Point-of-care Testing on Length of Stay of Patients in the Emergency Department: A Cluster-randomized Controlled Study.

OBJECTIVES: Crowding is a frequent concern in the emergency department (ED). Laboratory point-of-care testing (POCT) has been proposed to decrease patients' length of stay (LOS). Our objective was to determine whether an extended panel of POCT solutions could reduce LOS. METHODS: This was a single-center, prospective, open-label, controlled cluster-randomized study. Blood test processing was randomized into 1-week inclusion periods: interventional arm (laboratory analyses performed on POCT analyzers implemented in the ED) or control arm (central laboratory). The primary endpoint was LOS of pa…

Costs and length of stay for patients with and without sickle cell disease after hysterectomy, appendectomy, or knee replacement.

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) who undergo surgical procedures experience greater risk for preoperative and postoperative complications than patients without SCD; however, the impact of SCD on inpatient resource use and costs had not been reported [–7]. We recently examined inpatient length of stay and total costs for patients with and without SCD who underwent cholecystectomy or hip replacement and found that patients with SCD had longer lengths of stay and incurred higher costs [8]. In this study, we extend our previous work to surgical procedures that are less commonly performed in…

Prescribing factors influencing hospital length of stay in patients initiating lithium therapy for acute bipolar or schizoaffective mood episodes.

INTRODUCTION: Lithium has long been considered the gold standard mood stabilizer in the treatment of acute mood episodes related to bipolar (BD) and schizoaffective disorder. Previous research has primarily focused on lithium loading strategies and their effects on symptom severity and inpatient length of stay (LOS). However, less is known about specific prescribing practices at lithium initiation that may influence LOS. METHODS: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate three initiation-related prescribing factors of lithium and their association with changes in LOS among adult inpatients e…

Single-port robotic prostatectomy is associated with higher same-day discharge and reduced length of stay: a NSQIP analysis.

PURPOSE: Same-day discharge (SDD) after robotic prostatectomy is an increasingly common paradigm for carefully selected patients. The single-port (SP) platform is associated with reduced length of stay (LOS) compared with multiport (MP) in prior studies. We assessed the association of SP versus MP with SDD rates, LOS, and 30-day complications for radical and simple prostatectomies. METHODS: The 2022-2023 NSQIP database was queried for patients undergoing radical or simple prostatectomy. Multivariable negative binomial regression analysis identified predictors of LOS, while logistic regression…
