How to Distinguish Marfan Syndrome from Marfanoid Habitus in a Physical Examination-Comparison of External Features in Patients with Marfan Syndrome and Marfanoid Habitus.

Marfan Syndrome (MFS) is a systemic disorder caused by mutations in fibrillin-1. The most common cause of mortality in MFS is dissection and … natum, reduced elbow extension, hindfoot deformity, gothic palate, downslanting palpebral fissures, lens subluxation, myopia ≥ 3 dioptres remarkably high stature). The differentiation between patients with MFS and marfanoid body habitus is not possible by only assessing external body features; however, "red flags" could be helpful in the screening phase.

Novel Technique to Overcome the Nonavailability of a Long Needle 9-0 Polypropylene Suture for Sutured Scleral Fixation of the Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Using a Single Fisherman's Knot.

PURPOSE: To describe a method to overcome the nonavailability of a long needle 9-0 polypropylene suture for sutured scleral fixation of the posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) using a single fisherman's knot (SFK). METHODS: First, a 10-0 polypropylene suture was passed from the sclera to the ciliary sulcus using a long needle. A 9-0 suture was tied to the unpassed portion of the 10-0 suture with an SFK. We pulled the 10-0 suture to pass the SFK through the sclera, and then we cut the knot and removed the 10-0 suture. IOL fixation with 9-0 sutures used the conventional techniques used

[Secondary posterior chamber lenses. Implantation in intact, partially intact and missing posterior lens capsule].

Between January 1988 and December 1991, 63 patients (75 eyes) underwent secondary posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The mean period since primary cataract extraction was 85 months, and the mean age of these patients was 58 years. In 47 eyes with extracapsular aphakia the IOL was ciliary sulcus-fixated following polishing of the posterior capsule and synecholysis. In 8 eyes with remnants of the posterior capsule an anterior vitrectomy was performed. In 17 virtually intracapsular aphakic eyes additional transscleral suturing of the IOL was required. Mean visual acuity (VA) i

Outcome of Capsular Tension Ring (CTR) Implant in Complicated Cataracts.

INTRODUCTION: Surgery in the presence of zonular weakness or subluxated lens was a great surgical challenge and included intracapsular cataract extraction with anterior chamber IOL implantation or pars plana lensectomy and vitrectomy with a sutured (IOL). Modern surgical approache involves placement of endocapsular flexible PMMA ring that prevents iatrogenic loss of zonular support, minimizing vitreous loss and enables placement of in the bag IOL. AIM: To evaluate frequency and indications of capsular tension ring (CTR) implant and analyse the visual and anatomical outcome in various complica

Injuries of the globe: what can the radiologist offer?

Traumatic ocular injuries are a significant cause of blindness and visual deficits. In the setting of acute orbital trauma, urgent ophthalmologic evaluation and intervention are critical in preserving vision. However, in the acute trauma setting, clinical evaluation of the globe may be difficult in the presence of surrounding periorbital soft-tissue swelling and other associated injuries, and patient cooperation may be limited because of unresponsiveness, altered mentation, or sedation. Often, rapid access to imaging is part of the initial diagnostic evaluation, and radiologists may be the fir

Five cases of microphthalmia with other ocular malformations.

We report five cases of complex microphthalmia with other ocular malformations in infants or children, which were evaluated to investigate the relationship between the corneal diameters and total axial length. The size of the globe was measured by using computerized tomographic scans (CT scan), A-scan ultrasonography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There is a limited range of well-described malformation, including anterior or posterior segment dysgenesis or combined pathology such as corneal opacity, small cornea, iris hypoplasia, lens dislocation, cataract, chorioretinal coloboma, persi

Manual small incision cataract surgery: An ergonomic solution to tackle cataract backlog and challenging situations.

Cataract surgery is still the most common surgery performed worldwide. It has evolved tremendously in terms of incision, from 12 mm to 1.8 mm, in terms of capsulotomy from envelope type to automated capsulorhexis, and from rigid intraocular lens to foldable intraocular lenses. Manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) remains a valuable technique, particularly in rural and underserved areas, due to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. Its low logistics and favorable outcomes are particularly useful for managing the cataract backlog in developing countries. This review highlights the his

[Results of 52 operations for traumatic cataracts].

The authors are presenting the results of the traumatic cataract surgery in 52 patients (45 male, 7 female). The cataract was caused in 7 cases by blunt trauma, in 43 cases by penetrating trauma (in 16 cases with intraocular foreign body). The mean age of patients was 29 years, ranging from 4 to 73 years. In 2 cases was indicated the intracapsular extraction for the subluxation of the lens, in 2 eyes the discision was done and in 2 eyes the primary evacuation. In all other cases the extracapsular extraction was performed (19 with IOL implantation). Before the operation the visual acuity was 0.

[Pupillary block acute glaucoma due to acrylic intraocular lens posterior dislocation after Nd:YAG capsulotomy].

CASE REPORT: We present the clinical case of a 68 year-old woman who developed a pupillary block acute glaucoma due to vitreous hernia into anterior chamber following posterior dislocation of the intraocular lens one month after an Nd:YAG capsulotomy. DISCUSSION: We should consider these symptoms in the differential diagnosis of pseudophakic acute glaucoma, especially when visualisation of the anterior chamber is difficult due to corneal oedema and Nd:YAG capsulotomy was done.

Corneal characteristics in children with Marfan syndrome with or without ectopia lentis.

IMPORTANCE: Myopia of Marfan syndrome (MFS) may be ascribed to crystalline lens subluxation, abnormal corneal curvature, and increased globe axial length. Few studies have reported these measures in MFS children who did or did not have ectopia lentis (EL). OBJECTIVE: To measure eye findings longitudinally in MFS children with and without EL. METHODS: A prospective, comparative case study was conducted on 24 MFS children (48 eyes). EL necessitated lensectomy and intraocular lens implantation surgery in 16/24 children (mean age 5.6 ± 2.8 years). The remaining 8/24 MFS children (mean age 11.2 ±…
