Establishment of a novel whole animal HTS technology platform for melioidosis drug discovery.

Melioidosis is a serious emerging endemic infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a gram-negative pathogen. Septicemic melioidosis has a mortality rate of 50% even with treatment. Like other gram-negative bacteria, B. pseudomallei is resistant to a number of antibiotics and multi-drug resistant B. pseudomallei is beginning to be encountered in hospitals. There is a clear medical need to develop new treatment options to manage this disease. We used Burkholderia thailandensis (a BSL-2 class organism) to infect Caenorhabditis elegans and set up a surrogate whole animal infection m

Accuracy of prognostic scoring tools for ICU triage and mortality among patients in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early warning and severity scores are widely used to support triage and predict clinical deterioration. Their diagnostic performance in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) however remains uncertain due to differences in patient populations and healthcare resources compared with high-income settings. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of commonly used scoring systems for predicting intensive care unit (ICU) admission and in-hospital mortality among adults presenting to emergency departments in LMICs. METHODS: We conducted a systematic

Challenging behaviour by patients or close contacts, as experienced by healthcare workers in adult general and university hospital care: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare professionals in general and academic hospitals increasingly face challenging behaviour from patients and their close contacts, particularly in acute care settings. Ranging from aggression to socially inappropriate actions, such behaviour is understood as interactional and context-dependent. Yet research largely focuses on verbal and physical aggression, leaving other forms and hospital context underexplored, despite concerns about staff safety, workforce sustainability and care quality. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review aims to map literature on challenging b

Blood loss, complications, and the role of suction drains in shoulder arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Total shoulder replacement, including both anatomic and reverse procedures are one of the treatment options for shoulder arthritis and proximal humerus fractures, with consistently favorable outcomes in terms of pain relief and function improvement. During surgery, some surgeons prefer to place suction drains in the deep tissue to prevent hematomas or seromas, thereby reducing risks like wound dehiscence and infections. However, the routine use of suction drains in other orthopedic surgeries, such as hip and knee arthroplasty, has been questioned, with studies suggesting they may l
