We examined 188 consecutive patients, each of whom had an acute ankle sprain, using clinical stability assessment, stress radiographs, and arthrography to compare the reliability of these methods used in diagnosing lateral ligament ruptures of the ankle. Sixty-six of the ankles were treated operatively. This is a study of 49 patients with lesions of the spine excluding primary tumors of the spinal cord. All patients were examined by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Comparing both methods we observed slight diagnostic advantages for magnetic resonance imaging in inflammatory and neoplastic disease. Especially for evaluation of the spinal cord and subarachnoid space MR-imaging is far superior to computed tomography.

PURPOSE: The medial collateral ligament of the ankle, or deltoid ligament, can be injured in up to 40% of patients who sustain an ankle inversion sprain. Reporting injuries of the deltoid ligament is not easy due to confusion in the current anatomical descriptions, with up to 16 fascicles described, with variable frequencies. The purpose of this study was to clarify the anatomy of the deltoid ligament.
METHODS: Thirty-two fresh-frozen ankle specimens were used for this study. Careful dissection was undergone until full visualization of the deltoid ligament was achieved and measurements taken.
