Magnesium-deficiency-enhanced post-ischemic myocardial injury is reduced by substance P receptor blockade.

Dietary Mg-deficiency increases the susceptibility of rat hearts to ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury in vitro, and also promotes substance P-associated neurogenic inflammation in vivo. The relationship between Mg-deficiency-induced neurogenic inflammation and the subsequently-enhanced free radical-mediated oxidative and functional injury during I-R was examined using the substance P receptor antagonist, L-703,606. Rats maintained on 3-week Mg-deficient (MgD; <1.8 mmol Mg/kg food) or Mg-sufficient (MgS; 25 mmol Mg/kg) diets were treated during this time with either L-703,606 (1.0 or 3.5 mg/sus

Magnesium deficiency increases vasoconstrictor activity without affecting blood pressure of aged spontaneously hypertensive rats.

This study examines the effect of long-term magnesium-deficient diet on blood pressure and vascular reactivity in aged spontaneously hyperte … re examined in isolated aorta and in the isolated perfused mesenteric vascular bed. After 30 weeks, magnesium deficiency had no effect on systolic blood pressure and heart rate of SHR. The tissue concentrations of total magnesium in aorta, heart and kidney were not modified by magnesium deficient diet. Total calcium concentration was significantly higher in the heart …

Ferrylmyoglobin formation induced by acute magnesium deficiency in perfused rat heart causes cardiac failure.

The oxidation states of intracellular myoglobin and cytochrome oxidase aa3 were monitored by reflectance spectrophotometry in isolated perfu … cytosolic protein. The results suggest that a pathway leading to cardiac tissue damage, induced by magnesium deficiency, is probably involved in the generation of a ferrylmyoglobin radical which could be prevented by addition of ascorbate, which is known to be a one-electron reductant of this hypervalent form of myoglobin. In further studies, we also investigated whe …

Magnesium deficiency allergy-like crisis in hairless rats: a suggested model for inflammation studies.

Two groups of rats, one hairy and one hairless, received either a magnesium deficient diet (4 mg Mg/100 g diet) or a control diet (40 mg/100 g diet). After four days, an easily observable redness of the skin occurred in the hairless deficient group, progressing from the tail to the forehead, and later a hyperemia of the ear and dermatosis which increased with scratching appeared in both deficient groups. The clinical signs were more acute in the deficient hairless group. Histamine, total white blood cells and eosinophil counts increased in both deficient groups during the allergy-like crisis.

Association between magnesium deficiency scores and hip bone health in adults: a population-based study.

Studies on magnesium and bone health in the literature are conflicting. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between Magnesium Deficiency Score (MDS) and indicators of hip bone health in adults. This study analysed data from the NHANES in 13,259 US adults aged ≥20 years. Outcome measures included bone mineral density (BMD) (total femur, femoral neck, trochanter, intertrochanter, and Ward's triangle), osteoporosis, history of hip fracture, and FRAX (Fracture Risk Assessment Tool) score. Weighted linear regression and logistic regression models were used to assess the associatio…

Network and stoichiometry analysis revealed a fast magnesium and calcium deficiency of mulched Phyllostachys violascens.

The imbalanced fertilization and the consequential deterioration on the rhizosphere microbial community (RMC) were two potential reasons for the quick yielding degradation of Phyllostachys violascens (Lei-bamboo), a high-value shoot-oriented bamboo. However, most research only focused on nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; the studies on the dynamics of other nutrients, such as calcium and magnesium; and their driving mechanisms, lags far behind. Thus, Lei-bamboo fields of different mulching and recovery ages were selected to investigate the dynamics of calcium and magnesium in both soil and

Leaf diffusional capacity largely contributes to the reduced photosynthesis in rice plants under magnesium deficiency.

Numerous studies have clarified the impacts of magnesium (Mg) on leaf photosynthesis from the perspectives of protein synthesis, enzymes activation and carbohydrate partitioning. However, it still remains largely unknown how stomatal and mesophyll conductances (gs and gm, respectively) are regulated by Mg. In the present study, leaf gas exchanges, leaf hydraulic parameters, leaf structural traits and cell wall composition were examined in rice plants grown under high and low Mg treatments to elucidate the impacts of Mg on gs and gm. Our results showed that reduction of leaf photosynthesis unde

Exploring the association between magnesium deficiency and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases in NHANES 2005-2018.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) significantly impacts patients' quality of life and burdens healthcare systems. Magnesium is crucial for lung function and reducing respiratory disease risk. This study investigates the association between Magnesium Depletion Score (MDS) and COPD and explores whether inflammatory markers mediate this relationship. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 30,490 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018. MDS was calculated based on diuretic use, proton pump inhibitors, renal functi

Short-term dietary magnesium deficiency downregulates the expression of bone formation-related genes in rats.

Dietary magnesium deficiency increases osteoclastic bone resorption and decreases osteoblastic bone formation. Increased bone resorption due to dietary magnesium deficiency can be explained by increased expression of the receptor activator of nuclear factor kB ligand. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying decreased bone formation remain unclear. Thus, in the present study, to determine the mechanism underlying decreased bone formation induced by dietary magnesium deficiency, we investigated the effects of short-term dietary magnesium deficiency on the mRNA expression of genes related to …

Combined analyses of translatome and transcriptome in Arabidopsis reveal new players responding to magnesium deficiency.

Translational control of gene expression, including recruitment of ribosomes to messenger RNA (mRNA), is particularly important during the response to stress. Purification of ribosome-associated mRNAs using translating ribosome affinity purification (TRAP) followed by RNA-sequencing facilitates the study of mRNAs undergoing active transcription and better proxies the translatome, or protein response, to stimuli. To identify plant responses to Magnesium (Mg) deficiency at the translational level, we combined transcriptome and translatome analyses. Excitingly, we found 26 previously unreported M

Proteomic analysis of Citrus sinensis roots and leaves in response to long-term magnesium-deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg)-deficiency is frequently observed in Citrus plantations and is responsible for the loss of productivity and poor fruit quality. Knowledge on the effects of Mg-deficiency on upstream targets is scarce. Seedlings of 'Xuegan' [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] were irrigated with Mg-deficient (0 mM MgSO4) or Mg-sufficient (1 mM MgSO4) nutrient solution for 16 weeks. Thereafter, we first investigated the proteomic responses of C. sinensis roots and leaves to Mg-deficiency using two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) in order to (a) enrich our understanding of the molecular me

The B. subtilis MgtE magnesium transporter can functionally compensate TRPM7-deficiency in vertebrate B-cells.

Recent studies have shown that the vertebrate magnesium transporters Solute carrier family 41, members 1 and 2 (SLC41A1, SLC41A2) and Magnesium transporter subtype 1 (MagT1) can endow vertebrate B-cells lacking the ion-channel kinase Transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily M, member 7 (TRPM7) with a capacity to grow and proliferate. SLC41A1 and SLC41A2 display distant homology to the prokaryotic family of Mg(2+) transporters, MgtE, first characterized in Bacillus subtilis. These sequence similarities prompted us to investigate whether MgtE could potentially compensate for the la

The apparent impact of gestational magnesium (Mg) deficiency on the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Reports of studies in humans as well as data from several animal models show the importance of maternal dietary magnesium for the growth, development and survival of offspring. Published findings in mothers of victims of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and in the SIDS victims are compared with characteristics of magnesium deficiency in humans and animals. Observations concerning the level of magnesium in traditional diets of selected ethnic groups with the highest or lowest rates of SIDS appear to confirm the importance of magnesium in protecting the offspring from sudden death. Ethnic gro…

Magnesium deficiency enhances secretion of parathyroid hormone in normal and 5/6-nephrectomized uremic rats.

Hypercalcemia, rather than hypocalcemia, has been observed in conjunction with severe magnesium (Mg) depletion in rat, in contrast to the development of hypocalcemia in Mg deficiency in various animal models. In the present study, a possible involvement of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the development of hypercalcemia in rat was studied by using a newly-developed sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay system for the determination of rat PTH. In normal rat model, hypercalcemia occurred in association with a decrease of serum phosphate levels in Mg deficiency. However, serum PTH levels were not

Effect of magnesium deficiency on 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid in cultured human umbilical arterial endothelial cells.

Effects of magnesium deficiency on the production of 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) and cytosolic free calcium concentration in human umbilical arterial endothelial cells were studied by radioimmunoassay. 15-HETE release by endothelial cells incubated with normal magnesium media (900 microM Mg2+) for 24 h was 2.2 +/- 0.3 ng/mg protein. 15-HETE release gradually increased in proportion to decrease of magnesium. Low magnesium media (180 microM Mg2+) caused an increase in 15-HETE release in a time-dependent manner. Cytosolic free calcium concentration of endothelial cells in normal mag…
