BACKGROUND: Botulism is a rare disease caused by intoxication leading to muscle weakness and rapidly progressive dysphagia. With adequate therapy signs of recovery can be observed within several days. In the last few years, brain imaging studies carried out in healthy subjects showed activation of the sensorimotor cortex and the insula during volitional swallowing. However, little is known about cortical changes and compensation mechanisms accompanying swallowing pathology.
METHODS: In this study, we applied whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) in order to study changes in cortical activat…

Electrophysiological (EEG/MEG) imaging challenges statistics by providing two views of the same spatiotemporal data: topographic and tomographic. Until now, statistical tests for these two situations have developed separately. This work introduces statistical tests for assessing simultaneously the significance of spatiotemporal event-related potential/event-related field (ERP/ERF) components and that of their sources. The test for detecting a component at a given time instant is provided by a Hotelling's T(2) statistic. This statistic is constructed in such a manner to be invariant to any choi

We recorded magnetic brain activity from healthy human newborns when they heard frequency changes in an otherwise repetitive sound stream. We were able to record the magnetic counterpart of the mismatch negativity (MMN) previously described only with electric recordings in infants. The results show that these recordings are possible, although still challenging due to the small head size and head movements. The modelling of the neural sources underlying the recorded responses suggests cortical sources in the temporal lobes.

Developmental language learning impairments (LLI) are one of the most prevalent of all developmental disabilities, can occur in children for a wide variety of reasons, and have been shown to co-occur frequently with other developmental social, emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as with academic achievement problems. Research pertaining to developmental LLI of unknown origin, with an emphasis on the continuum between oral and written language impairment, is the focus of this review. Given the complexity of language learning, research has focused on multiple levels of analysis, includin

We recorded auditory evoked magnetic responses with a whole-scalp 122-channel SQUID neuromagnetometer in 14 patients with Bell's palsy (9 with left-sided and 5 with right-sided) and in 10 controls. The stimuli were 50-ms 1-kHz tone bursts, delivered first to the left and then to the right ear at interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 1, 2 and 4 s. In patients, the N100m, the 100-ms response originating in the auditory cortices peaked, on average, 8 ms earlier and the response strengths were, on average, 7 nAm stronger over the contralateral than ipsilateral hemisphere. The response latencies and st

Standard transcranial magnetic stimulation and nasal muscle F-wave recordings were used to assess proximal facial nerve function in 27 patients with unilateral acoustic tumors (mean diameter, 29 mm) and clinically intact facial nerve function. Latency measurements for F waves and cortical magnetic stimulation were abnormal. Moreover, F ratios, central motor conduction time, and the ratio of response latency to cortical and cisternal magnetic stimulation were significantly increased. Amplitudes were unchanged. Correlation analysis with tumor diameter as dependent variable yielded maximum r valu

Cortical or cortical reflex myoclonus is characterized by abnormally enlarged cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (giant SEPs), which most likely reflect pathologically hyperexcitable sensorimotor cortex. To clarify the pathogenesis of myoclonus of cortical origin, we simultaneously recorded SEPs and whole head somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) following electric stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist in six patients with cortical myoclonus. N20m and enlarged P30m were observed in all patients and were localized at the posterior bank of the central sulcus (Brodmann area 3b

Authors compared MR anatomy and magneto-encephalographic (MEG) functional methods in locating auditory cortex in 20 normal volunteers and 56 patients with intracranial structural lesions. Auditory evoked response was measured over the entire head, using a helmet shaped 64 channel MEG system. In each subject, three dimensional MR image was obtained with identical coordinate system of MEG. Best fit sphere to each subject's head was calculated from MRI data. Signal source of auditory evoked MEG was estimated using a two dipole model in the best fit sphere. Position and orientation of dipoles were

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of anodal cerebellar transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (ctDCS) on the excitability of the sensorimotor cortex (SM1), in Friedreich's ataxia (FA) and healthy participants.
METHODS: Nineteen FA and 17 healthy participants underwent a 10-day non-sham controlled anodal ctDCS intervention. SM1 excitability pre and post ctDCS was quantified with Magnetoencephalography-assessed resting beta amplitude and power, beta burst rate and duration, and the aperiodic component of oscillatory power. Cortical processing of proprioception pre and post ctDCS was assessed w…

Anomalous Mismatch Negativity (MMN) in psychosis could be a consequence of disturbed neural oscillatory activity at sensory/perceptual stages of stimulus processing. This study investigated effective connectivity within and between the auditory regions during auditory odd-ball deviance tasks. The analyses were performed on two magnetoencephalography (MEG) datasets: one on duration MMN in a cohort with various diagnoses within the psychosis spectrum and neurotypical controls, and one on duration and pitch MMN in first-episode psychosis patients and matched neurotypical controls. We applied spec…

Alpha-band (8-12 Hz) event-related desynchronization (ERD) or a decrease in alpha power in electro- and magnetoencephalography (EEG and MEG) reflects the involvement of a neural tissue in information processing. It is known that most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties in information processing, and, thus, investigation of alpha oscillations is of particular interest in this population. Previous studies have demonstrated alterations in this neural activity in individuals with ASD; however, little is known about alpha ERD during simultaneous presentation of auditory a…

Auditory attention operates through top-down (TD) and bottom-up (BU) mechanisms that are supported by dorsal and ventral brain networks, respectively, with the main overlap in the lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC). A good TD/BU balance is essential to be both task-efficient and aware of our environment, yet it is rarely investigated. Oscillatory activity is a novel method to probe the attentional dynamics with evidence that gamma activity (>30 Hz) could signal BU processing and thus would be a good candidate to support the activation of the ventral BU attention network. Magnetoencephalography d…

Herein, we used an adapted version of the multisource interference task and magnetoencephalography to investigate the spectral, temporal, and spatial dynamics of conflict processing in healthy adults (N = 23). Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is now a widely used method for modulating the human brain, but the resulting physiological effects are not understood. Recent studies have combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) with simultaneous tDCS to evaluate online changes in occipital alpha and gamma oscillations, but no study to date has quantified the offline (i.e., after tDCS) alterations in these responses. Thirty-five healthy adults received active or sham anodal tDCS to the occipital cortices, and then completed a visual stimulation paradigm during MEG that is known to elicit robust ga…

Developmental stuttering (DS) is a disruption of the rhythm of speech, and affected people may be unable to execute fluent voluntary speech. There are still questions about the exact causes of DS. Evidence suggests there are differences in the structure and functioning of motor systems used for preparing, executing, and controlling motor acts, especially when they are speech related. Much research has been obtained using neuroimaging methods, ranging from functional magnetic resonance to diffusion tensor imaging and electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography. Studies using transcranial magn…

Other's eye gaze is a powerful attention orienting cue that can change our perception of objects in the environment. Here, we seek to characterize the influence of attention orienting by eye gaze on the neural processing of visual targets. We used a Posner-like cueing paradigm to investigate with magnetoencephalography the brain responses associated with target processing. We analyzed the cerebral sources of the evoked responses to visual targets that were validly or invalidly cued by eye gaze. The effect of attention orienting was reflected in faster reaction times to valid than invalid targe…
