Comparative evaluation of lag screws and miniplates in the fixation of anterior mandibular fractures- a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular fractures are among the commonest fractures of maxillofacial region with anterior-mandibular fractures accounting for 8-15%. Mini-plates with or without arch bar is the most commonly used fixation method to achieve ORIF. However, the mandible symphysis is uniquely shaped for the application of lag-screws. AIM: This study aims at evaluating the effectiveness of lag-screws in comparison with mini-plates in fixation of anterior mandibular fractures. METHODOLOGY: 20 patients diagnosed with anterior mandibular fractures were divided into 2 equal groups. Group-A was treate…

Three-Axis Plate for Open Rigid Internal Fixation of Base Fracture of Mandibular Condyle.

Metallic biomaterials are prevalent in medical applications. In the treatment of mandibular fractures, the use of metallic biomaterials makes it possible to recover the ability to bite and partially recover speech through preventing ankylosis of the temporomandibular joints, the formation of pseudoarthritic joints, and the consolidation of reduced bones. This article presents the concept of a triaxial plate for osteosynthesis of basal fractures of the mandibular condyle, which are very common fractures in humans. Approximately half of patients with such fractures have wide (squat) condylar pro…

Evaluation of Airway Changes Following Isolated Unilateral mandibular Fracture: A Prospective Quasi-Experimental.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma presents unique airway management challenges due to anatomical disruptions, soft tissue compromise, edema, hemorrhage, and emesis. While isolated mandibular fractures are typically non-emergent, specific fracture patterns can precipitate airway obstruction secondary to bony fragment displacement. There is a paucity of data on airway changes after unilateral mandibular fractures. This prompted us to conduct the present study. METHODS: This prospective, quasi-experimental study enrolled patients with isolated unilateral mandibular fractures requiring surgical re…

Evaluation of occlusal forces using T scan analysis following mandibular fracture fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Mandible receives maximum impact following maxillofacial trauma. The dentate segment in particular is of importance as it has a direct bearing on the occlusive forces. The studies that have been carried out are either based on crude clinical evaluations or make use of elaborate and labor-intensive techniques. This study made use of T-scan analysis for objective identification of occlusive forces following mandibular fracture fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty clinic-radiologically diagnosed cases of dentate segments of the mandible were considered, after random sampling met

Finite element analysis of 3D-printed personalized titanium plates for mandibular angle fracture.

This paper discussed the size of 3 D-printed personalized titanium plates that can gain maximum stability of mandibular fracture and minimize stress shielding through finite element analysis. A 3 D virtual model of mandible with mandibular angle fracture was created from the CT data of patient. 3 D-printed personalized titanium plates varying in length and thickness were designed, and finite element analysis was performed under different loading conditions and fracture healing periods. After that, the stress distribution and deformation of the mandible with gonial fracture could be observed, a

Biomechanical Assessment of the Validity of Sheep as a Preclinical Model for Testing Mandibular Fracture Fixation Devices.

Mandibular fracture fixation and reconstruction are usually performed using titanium plates and screws, however, there is a need to improve current fixation techniques. Animal models represent an important step for the testing of new designs and materials. However, the validity of those preclinical models in terms of implant biomechanics remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigate the biomechanics of the sheep mandible as a preclinical model for testing the mechanical strength of fixation devices and the biomechanical environment induced on mandibular fractures. We aimed to assess t…

Prevalence of mandibular fracture in patients visiting a tertiary dental care hospital in North India.

BACKGROUND: Injuries of the maxillofacial complex represent one of the most important health problems worldwide. At present, in developing India, due to poor traffic sense, maxillofacial trauma and fractures are most epidemiologic diseases. Mandible is the largest and strongest facial bone and it is the second most commonly fractured bone. Mandibular fractures can involve only one site or can often involve multiple anatomic sites simultaneously. AIMS: The present study is aimed to know the age- and sex-related prevalence of parasymphyseal fracture, fracture of angle, condylar fracture, symphy…

Mandibular Fracture Patterns at a Medical Center in Central Taiwan: A 3-Year Epidemiological Review.

Mandibular fractures constitute a major portion of maxillofacial trauma and may lead to considerable functional and aesthetic sequelae if treatment is inadequate or delayed. An epidemiology study on mandibular fractures may guide the preventive efforts of the Taiwan public health care system. Therefore, a retrospective review was conducted at a medical center in central Taiwan to evaluate the current mandibular fracture epidemiology. The medical records and digitized radiographs of 198 patients who received treatment for mandibular fractures during a 3-year period (from October 2010 to Septembe…
