Construction and validation of a prognostic model for seroma after breast cancer surgery: a dual-center retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a predictive model for postoperative seroma resolution in patients with breast cancer, thereby providing an evidence-based tool for individualized postoperative management. METHODS: This was a dual-center retrospective cohort study. A total of 373 patients who underwent surgery for breast cancer were included and an independent validation cohort(n=84)according to study center. Candidate predictors were screened using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analyses, and a nomogram was subsequently constructed. Inter

Concurrent human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer with axillary nodal metastasis in a patient with pituitary prolactinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Managing high-risk human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer (BC) concurrent with a functioning pituitary adenoma is clinically challenging. Current oncological guidelines lack specific clinical consensus protocols regarding the simultaneous administration of intensive dual-HER2 targeted therapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and continuous dopamine agonists. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old postmenopausal woman with a 5-year history of pituitary prolactinoma presented with a painless left breast mass over a 2-year duration. Her serum prolactin (PR

Pregnancy-associated triple-negative breast cancer: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: The incidence of pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is relatively low, but it has been increasing in recent years. The onset of PABC causes serious harm to the fetus and the mother due to the unique physiological characteristics of pregnancy, which poses a particular challenge to clinicians. This article reports a case of pregnancy-associated triple-negative breast cancer and describes the patient characteristics and systematic treatment of this type of breast cancer. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 33-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with a left breast mass that had appeared mor

A Comparison of 3D Conformal and Deep Inspiratory Breath Holding vs. 4D-CT Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy for Patients with Left Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Multimodality is required for the treatment of breast cancer. Surgery, radiation (RT), and systemic therapy were traditionally used. Pharmacotherapy includes different drug mechanisms, such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapies, alone or in combination with radiotherapy. While radiation offers numerous benefits, it also has certain harmful risks. such as cardiac and pulmonary toxicity, lymphedema, and secondary cancer. Modern radiation techniques have been developed to reduce organs at risk (OAR) doses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a prospective feasibil

Severe immune-related hepatitis and myocarditis caused by PD-1 inhibitors in the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subtype of breast cancer that is defined clinically by the absence of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her-2) expression. Due to its unresponsiveness to endocrine or targeted therapies, the clinical prognosis of TNBC is very poor. In recent years, research into immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has led to significant progress in the treatment of TNBC. A large amount of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including skin, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, hepatic, cardiovascular

The prognostic significance of total lymph node number in patients with axillary lymph node-negative breast cancer.

AIM: In node-negative breast cancer patients, several factors for survival have been evaluated and currently, some of them are accepted for their prognostic and/or predictive values after validation in the separate data sets. The prognostic significance of increases in the number of pathologically detectable axillary lymph nodes in the node-negative patients could not been established clearly. To address this question, we have reviewed our patients' records. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in pathologically node-negative patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy f

Breast cancer in women < or = 35 years: review of 1002 cases from a single institution.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset breast cancer may differ with respect to etiology, clinical features and outcome compared with breast cancer in older women. To gain further insight, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical features and outcome of women < or = 35 years with primary breast cancer seen at our institution over a 30-year period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Charts were reviewed for women with operable breast cancer diagnosed < or = 35 years of age seen at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), Toronto from 1965-1994. RESULTS: One thousand eighty-six women with non-metastatic invasive breast canc

Early versus delayed shoulder motion following axillary dissection: a randomized prospective study.

The role and timing of physical therapy following axillary dissection for melanoma, or in conjunction with modified radical mastectomy has not been extensively studied. A prospective randomized clinical trial was carried out over an 18-month period in the Surgery Branch, National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Clinical Center, in which patients were assigned to receive one of two postoperative physical therapy regimens. Patients were assigned to receive graduated increases in allowed range of motion (ROM), either beginning on postoperative day 1 (early) or da

Postmastectomy hypofractionated and accelerated radiation therapy with (and without) subcutaneous amifostine cytoprotection.

PURPOSE: Postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) provides major local control and survival benefits. More aggressive radiation therapy schemes may, however, be necessary in specific subgroups, provided they are safely administered. We report the tolerance and efficacy of a highly accelerated and hypofractionated regimen (HypoARC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: One hundred twelve high-risk patients who had undergone mastectomy received 10 consecutive fractions of 3.5 Gy in 12 days (thoracic wall and axillary/supraclavicular areas). Two consecutive additional fractions of 4 Gy were given to the surgic

[Association of adenocarcinoma of esophagus and breast cancer in a male with Madelung' disease].

The development of a cancer of the esophagus in women who previously had received radiotherapy for breast cancer is a known although infrequent event. The risk of apparition of the second neoplasia is greater in women who survive at least ten years after the exposition to the radiation. Squamous cell carcinoma is the histological subtype more frequent. We report a case of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus in a man diagnosed of benign symmetrical lipomatosis (Madelung' disease), who had received adjuvant radiotherapy three years before for breast cancer.

Beyond the Tumor: Invasive Fungal Infection Unveiled in HER2-Positive Breast Cancer Patient Mimicking Disease Relapse.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is a major global health concern among all malignancies, with HER2-positive breast cancer representing a particularly aggressive subtype. It affects approximately 20% of patients and is associated with a high risk of relapse. The management of HER2-positive breast cancer has been significantly improved by targeted therapies, though challenges remain, especially in resource-limited settings. Invasive fungal infections are also common and can manifest as metastatic lesions in immunocompromised cancer patients undergoing intensive treatments making the diagnosis challe

The Role of Axillary Lymph Node Dissection Width and Radiotherapy in Axillary Vein Pathologies and Psychophysical Outcomes in Breast Cancer.

Background and Objectives: Lymphedema is one of the most important morbid complications of modified radical mastectomy (MRM) surgery. It can cause limb movement restriction and psychosocial deformities in some patients. This study aimed to determine and compare the physiological and pathological changes that develop in the axillary venous structures in patients who underwent axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with breast cancer who underwent MRM and breast-conserving surgery (BCS) plus SLNB between 2017 and 202

Metaplastic breast cancer with a unique presentation and complete response to chemotherapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Metaplastic breast carcinomas are a rare variant group of breast carcinomas. They are usually high-grade and triple-negative tumors. They often present with large primary tumor sizes. However, the involvement of axillary lymph nodes is infrequent at the time of diagnosis. Metaplastic breast carcinomas are associated with a worse prognosis and a poorer response to chemotherapy in comparison with other non-metaplastic triple-negative breast cancers. Up until this point, there are no specific treatment recommendations for metaplastic breast carcinomas beyond those intended for invasiv

Mixed primary mucinous cystadenocarcinoma and invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (MCA) mainly occurs in the ovary, pancreas, and appendix, whereas the breast is a rare primary site of occurrence. Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most common breast malignancy. Only 31 cases of the breast MCA have been reported in the English literature, and the coexistence of MCA and IDC in the breast are rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we describe a 61-year-old postmenopausal woman with no family history of breast cancer or other breast-related diseases, who presented with a palpable mass in her left breast lasting for 2 months. On ultrasonograp

T cell-prolymphocytic leukemia detected in a patient of breast cancer at the time of recurrence: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Therapy related second malignancy of the hematological system is small but real risk after adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. It includes acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS); however T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) has not been described earlier in relation to breast cancer and its therapy. T-PLL is a rare chronic T-cell lymphoproliferative disease with a mature post-thymic T-cell immunophenotype and aggressive clinical course.
