Maternal Exposure to Domestic Hair Cosmetics and Occupational Endocrine Disruptors Is Associated with a Higher Risk of Hypospadias in the Offspring.

Pregnant women are exposed to various chemical products at home and at work. Some of these products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as cosmetics, pesticides, industrial chemicals, heavy metals, plastics or medications that could alter sexual differentiation and increase the risk of hypospadias. We evaluated maternal occupational and household exposures that could constitute risk factors for hypospadias. From 2011 to 2014, we enrolled 57 full-term newborns with hypospadias and three randomly selected controls per case (162 control newborns), matched for gestational age, from

Maternal residential exposure to agricultural pesticides and birth defects in a 2003 to 2005 North Carolina birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are responsible for a large proportion of disability and infant mortality. Exposure to a variety of pesticides have been linked to increased risk of birth defects. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study to estimate the associations between a residence-based metric of agricultural pesticide exposure and birth defects. We linked singleton live birth records for 2003 to 2005 from the North Carolina (NC) State Center for Health Statistics to data from the NC Birth Defects Monitoring Program. Included women had residence at delivery inside NC and infants with gestatio

A Challenging Issue in the Etiology of Speech Problems: The Effect of Maternal Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields on Speech Problems in the Offspring.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, mothers are continuously exposed to different sources of electromagnetic fields before and even during pregnancy.  It has recently been shown that exposure to mobile phone radiation during pregnancy may lead to adverse effects on the brain development in offspring and cause hyperactivity. Researchers have shown that behavioral problems in laboratory animals which have a similar appearance to ADHD are caused by intrauterine exposure to mobile phones. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the maternal exposure to different sources of electromagnet…

Expression of the sFLT1 gene in cord blood cells is associated to maternal arsenic exposure and decreased birth weight.

There is increasing epidemiologic evidence that arsenic exposure in utero is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and may contribute to long-term health effects. These effects may occur at low environmental exposures but the underlying molecular mechanism is not clear. We collected cord blood samples of 183 newborns to identify associations between arsenic levels and birth anthropometric parameters in an area with very low arsenic exposure. Our core research aim was to screen for transcriptional marks that mechanistically explain these associations. Multiple regression analyses showed th

Individual and mixture effects of caffeine and sulfamethoxazole on the daggerblade grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio following maternal exposure.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) such as caffeine and sulfamethoxazole have been detected in the estuarine environment. The present study characterized effects of a maternal exposure of these compounds on the development of the daggerblade grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio from embryo to juvenile life stage. Ovigerous females were exposed to either caffeine (20 mg/L), sulfamethoxazole (60 mg/L), or a mixture of both (20 mg/L caffeine and 60 mg/L sulfamethoxazole). Embryos were then removed from the females and the effects of the PPCPs on hatching, metamorphosis, juvenile growth…

The independent effects of second hand smoke exposure and maternal body mass index on the anthropometric measurements of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy, whether as active smoking or by exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including low birth weight (LBW) and small for gestational age infants due to the effect of tobacco on the anthropometric measurements of the newborn. This effect might be masked by maternal obesity as it increases fetal weight. The objectives of this study were to estimate the independent effects of maternal exposure to SHS and maternal body mass index (BMI) on the anthropometric measurements and on the prevalence of macrosom…

Risk of spontaneous preterm birth in relation to maternal exposure to intimate partner violence during pregnancy in Peru.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is increasingly recognized as an important cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity. We assessed the relation between IPV and risk of spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) among Peruvian women. The study was conducted among 479 pregnant women who delivered a preterm singleton infant (<37 weeks gestation) and 480 controls (≥37 weeks gestation). Participants' exposure to physical and emotional violence during pregnancy was collected during in-person interviews conducted after delivery and while patients were in hospital. Odds ratios (aOR) and 95 % confidence intervals

Maternal exposure to diphenhydramine during the fetal period in rats: effects on physical and neurobehavioral development and on neurochemical parameters.

Previous research from our laboratory suggested that the administration of antihistaminics (H(1) receptor antagonists) to pregnant Wistar rats throughout pregnancy altered brain sexual differentiation and dopaminergic physiology of the offspring. In the present study, we assessed the effects of 20 mg/kg diphenhydramine (DPH) administration to pregnant rats during the fetal period of pregnancy [Gestation Days (GDs) 16-21], a critical period for brain sexual differentiation and central nervous system (CNS) maturation. Maternal body weight and water and food consumption were measured during pregn

Effect in rats of simultaneous prenatal exposure to ochratoxin A and aflatoxin B1. I. Maternal toxicity and fetal malformations.

Ochratoxin A (OA) and Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), the food borne mycotoxins are produced by several fungal species of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium. To determine the teratogenic effects, these mycotoxins were administered orally either individually or in combination to the pregnant Wistar rats on days 6-15 of gestation. OA and AFB1 were dissolved in corn oil and different doses of OA (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mg/kg), AFB1 (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00 mg/kg), and a combination of OA+AFB1 (0.125+0.125; 0.25+0.50; 0.50+0.25 mg/kg) were given by gastric intubation to rats. Maternal exposure to the synthetic cannabinoid HU-210: effects on the endocrine and immune systems of the adult male offspring.

Natural and synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists have been described to exert profound effects on both the neuroendocrine integration and … ymphocyte subpopulations in the spleen and peripheral blood. The major changes observed occur after maternal exposure to the 25 microg/kg dose of HU-210. There was a reduction in the T-helper subpopulation in the spleen and a dose-related decrease in the rate of T(helper)/T(cytotoxic) in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Concanavalin-A and lipopolysaccharide-induced pr …

Maternal exposure to cyclophosphamide during prepubertal life does not affect the cryosusceptibility of in vitro derived mouse embryos.

ABSTRACT: Prepubertal exposure to gonadotoxic chemotherapy, such as cyclophosphamide (CY), poses a significant risk to long-term fertility by depleting ovarian reserve and impairing oocyte quality. Such treatments are commonly administered to young girls with cancer, and when these individuals later seek assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), concerns arise regarding the developmental competence and cryotolerance of resulting embryos. Using a mouse model, this study evaluated the impact of prepubertal CY exposure (2 successive weekly doses of 75 mg/kg body weight at 2 weeks of age) on the

Prenatal exposure to maternal asthma and asthma medication and neurodevelopmental outcomes: a population cohort study of 179,024 children.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbations during pregnancy can adversely affect maternal and foetal health. However, prenatal exposure to asthma medication may itself impact child outcomes. This study aims to determine whether prenatal exposure to asthma medication was associated with a range of neurodevelopmental outcomes. METHODS: A birth cohort was constructed using linked health and education records of children liveborn in Wales from 2009 to 2016, with up to 12 years follow-up. Generalized estimating equations with a binomial distribution and logit link function were employed to evaluate special

Maternal Zika virus exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes: A longitudinal study of preschool children in the ZIKAlliance Colombian Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been inconsistently associated with neurodevelopmental delay (ND). We aimed to compare the incidence of ND between ZIKV-exposed and ZIKV-unexposed children within the ZIKAlliance (ZA) cohort, in Colombia, assessed 2 years after birth (2018-2021). METHODS: We performed a neurodevelopmental evaluation on normocephalic children (aged 40-72 months) from the ZIKAlliance cohort. Children were classified as ZIKV-exposed (maternal positive RT-qPCR or virus neutralization test - VNT) or unexposed (maternal negative IgG ELISA or VNT in paired antenatal sample

Maternal HIV Exposure Is Associated With Transient Transcriptional Changes in Monocytes and Natural Killer Cells in Early Infancy.

BACKGROUND: Differences in immune responses and infectious disease have been described in children exposed to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but uninfected (CHEU), compared with children unexposed to HIV (CHU). We hypothesized that maternal HIV exposure modifies the transcriptome and epigenome of innate immune cells in CHEU that may contribute to dysregulation of antimicrobial immune responses. METHODS: Monocytes and natural killer (NK) cells were evaluated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from CHEU and CHU in Kenya at 6-10 weeks and 12 months of age. Monocyte and NK cell subsets wer

Maternal PM2.5 Exposure and Cardiac Developmental Abnormalities in Fetuses and Neonates: Progressive Activation of the Complement and Coagulation Cascade.

Emerging studies indicate a positive correlation between maternal PM2.5 exposure and an increased risk of congenital heart diseases (CHDs). However, the developmental origins in fetal and neonatal offspring, as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain elusive. To bridge this gap, we established an animal model of maternal PM2.5 exposure and confirmed its adverse effects on cardiac function and structure in neonates, primarily left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction and myocardial hypertrophy in both male and female offspring, characterized by thick ventricular walls and narrowed v
