Measuring socioeconomic and health financing inequality in maternal mortality in Colombia: a mixed methods approach.

Problems related to health financing policies are contributing to inadequate quality of care and inequitable use of healthcare by pregnant women, resulting in poor maternal health outcomes. The purpose of the study was to measure socioeconomic and health financing related inequality in maternal mortality in Colombia as well as identifying potential epicenters of this inequality. METHODS: The data used was obtained from National Information of Social Protection (Sispro), the Depart…

Maternal exercise intervention in obese pregnancy improves the cardiovascular health of the adult male offspring.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity during pregnancy is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease in the offspring. With increased numbers of women entering pregnancy overweight or obese, there is a requirement for targeted interventions to reduce disease risk in future generations. Using an established murine model of maternal obesity during pregnancy, we investigated if a treadmill exercise intervention in the mother could improve offspring cardiac health and explored potential underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A 20-minute treadmill exercise intervention protocol was performed 5 days a week i

The effect of maternal employment on the elementary and junior high school students' mental health in Maku.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Most experts view the childhood period as a foundation for shaping the individuals' fundamental future characteristics and behaviors. They believe that parents' personality and behavior quality exert a greater effect on the development of a child's personality than other factors. Given the mothers' role in children's mental health and considering the fact that children are a nation's future makers, the present study was designed to investigate the impact of maternal employment on students' mental health in Maku. MATERIALS & METHODS: The present study is descriptive and

Determinants of male involvement in maternal and child health services in sub-Saharan Africa: a review.

INTRODUCTION: Male participation is a crucial component in the optimization of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services. This is especially so where prevention strategies to decrease Mother-to-Child Transmission (MTCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are sought. This study aims to identify determinants of male partners' involvement in MCH activities, focusing specifically on HIV prevention of maternal to child transmission (PMTCT) in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Literature review was conducted using the following data bases: Pubmed/MEDLINE; CINAHL; EMBASE; COCHRANE; Psych INFORMATION an

Priority medicines for maternal and child health: a global survey of national essential medicines lists.

BACKGROUND: In April 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a list of "priority medicines" for maternal and child health based on 1) the global burden of disease and 2) evidence of efficacy and safety. The objective of this study was to examine the occurrence of these priority medicines on national essential medicines lists. METHODS AND FINDINGS: All essential medicines lists published since 1999 were selected from the WHO website collection. The most-up-to date list for each country was then selected, resulting in 89 unique country lists. Each list was evaluated for inclusion of

Cesarean delivery outcomes from the WHO global survey on maternal and perinatal health in Africa.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between cesarean delivery rates and pregnancy outcomes in African health facilities. METHODS: Data were obtained from all births over 2-3 months in 131 facilities. Outcomes included maternal deaths, severe maternal morbidity, fresh stillbirths, and neonatal deaths and morbidity. RESULTS: Median cesarean delivery rate was 8.8% among 83439 births. Cesarean deliveries were performed in only 95 (73%) facilities. Facility-specific cesarean delivery rates were influenced by previous cesarean, pre-eclampsia, induced labor, referral status, and higher health faci

The risk of congenital malformations and other neonatal and maternal health outcomes among licensed cosmetologists.

This study sought to determine if cosmetologists in New York State (NYS) have a higher risk of complications of labor/delivery or congenital malformations and poor neonatal health indicators among their offspring compared with Realtors and the general population. This retrospective cohort study matched licensing records for cosmetologists and realtors to birth records and the NYS Congenital Malformations Registry from 1997 to 2003. A random sample of NYS birth certificates, frequency matched to cosmetologists on year of child's birth, mother's ethnicity, and education, was also formed. Outcome

The untold story: how the health care systems in developing countries contribute to maternal mortality.

This article attempts to put together evidence from maternal mortality studies in developing countries of how an inadequate health care system characterized by misplaced priorities contributes to high maternal mortality rates. Inaccessibility of essential health information to the women most affected, and the physical as well as economic and sociocultural distance separating health services from the vast majority of women, are only part of the problem. Even when the woman reaches a health facility, there are a number of obstacles to her receiving adequate and appropriate care. These are a resu

Partial pictures: what routine health data can and cannot tell us about the quality of maternal and neonatal health services in Tanzania.

Measurement of contact coverage of maternal and newborn health services may overestimate the benefits of the care that is provided, because the quality of care is not captured. It is therefore important to better understand the opportunities and challenges of capturing elements of care quality in routine health information systems (RHIS). This study explored healthcare workers' (HCWs), health sector managers' and policymakers' perspectives on the value and limits of routine health data to understand the quality of maternal and neonatal health services in Tanzania. We conducted qualitative rese

Bridging Equity Gaps in Maternal and NCD Services: Policy Priorities for Bangladesh's Evolving Health Landscape.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, Bangladesh has made significant gains in maternal and child health, driven by investments in community-based services, education, and targeted public health interventions. However, disparities in service access and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to undermine the promise of universal and equitable care. OBJECTIVE: This perspective provides a policy-oriented, interceptive synthesis of progress and persistent gaps in five critical domains-maternal care, child nutrition, family planning, immunization, and hypertension-by analyzing p
