Pulsed antibiotic release into the environment may foster the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

The WHO has identified rising antibiotic resistance as a 'global threat,' highlighting the urgent need to understand how resistance spreads. A key concept is the minimum selective concentration (MSC)-the threshold at which resistant bacteria gain a competitive advantage. While MSC studies typically use single antibiotics under controlled conditions, real-world environments often contain fluctuating levels and mixtures of antibiotics from sources such as wastewater, complicating the dynamics of resistance spread. This study presents a mathematical model that simulates antibiotic accumulation in

Back to the fundamentals: a reply to Basener and Sanford 2018.

Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection has haunted theoretical population genetic literature since it was proposed in 1930, leading to numerous interpretations. Most of the confusion stemmed from Fisher's own obscure presentation. By the 1970s, a clearer view of Fisher's theorem had been achieved and it was found that, regardless of its utility or significance, it represents a general theorem of evolutionary biology. Basener and Sanford (J Math Biol 76:1589-1622, 2018) writing in JOMB, however, paint a different picture of the fundamental theorem as one hindered by its assumptions a

Mathematical model of Zika virus with vertical transmission.

Zika is a flavivirus transmitted to humans through either the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes or sexual transmission. Zika has been linked to congenital anomalies such as microcephaly. In this paper, we analyze a new system of ordinary differential equations which incorporates human vertical transmission of Zika virus, the birth of babies with microcephaly and asymptomatically infected individuals. The Zika model is locally and globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number is less than unity. Our model shows that asymptomatic individuals amplify the disease burden in the

New diagnostic EEG markers of the Alzheimer's disease using visibility graph.

A new chaos-wavelet approach is presented for electroencephalogram (EEG)-based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) employing a recently developed concept in graph theory, visibility graph (VG). The approach is based on the research ideology that nonlinear features may not reveal differences between AD and control group in the band-limited EEG, but may represent noticeable differences in certain sub-bands. Hence, complexity of EEGs is computed using the VGs of EEGs and EEG sub-bands produced by wavelet decomposition. Two methods are employed for computation of complexity of the VGs: one based

Nonlinear analysis of digital images and Doppler measurements for trophoblastic tumor.

Cancer can be viewed as a complex adaptive system. Complex adaptive systems can be described mathematically by nonlinear (chaos) theory including asymmetry, fractal structure and autocorrelation factor. Taking into consideration spatial irregularity and heterogeneity of internal structures of tumor cells, we examined deterministic chaos of trophoblastic tumor for organ, cellular, molecular levels on digital images and their Doppler measurements of blood flow. The digital images were tested by evaluation of contours deformation level and quantitative heterogeneous pattern. The suggested algorit

[A new concept of psychosomatic research exemplified by premature labor].

One of the most serious problems of psychosomatic research is the adequate choice of the method applied to clinical questions. In the past empirical investigations have been based upon univariate and moreover linear correlations. In this study a multivariate nonlinear concept was developed which was generated in a first trial proven and confirmed prospectively in a second one using two sorts of mathematical analyses. The first included 35 patients with premature labour and 25 healthy pregnant women as controls. The latter was conducted with 238 patients being recruited in the first trimester o

Stochastic challenges to interrupting helminth transmission.

Predicting the effect of different programmes designed to control both the morbidity induced by helminth infections and parasite transmission is greatly facilitated by the use of mathematical models of transmission and control impact. In such models, it is essential to account for the many sources of uncertainty - natural, or otherwise - to ensure robustness in prediction and to accurately depict variation around an expected outcome. In this paper, we investigate how well the standard deterministic models match the predictions made using individual-based stochastic simulations. We also explore

The Developing Concept of Tonotopic Organization of the Inner Ear.

This study aims to document the historical conceptualization of the inner ear as the anatomical location for the appreciation of sound at a continuum of frequencies and to examine the evolution of concepts of tonotopic organization to our current understanding. Primary sources used are from the sixth century BCE through the twentieth century CE. Each work/reference was analyzed from two points of view: to understand the conception of hearing and the role of the inner ear and to define the main evidential method. The dependence on theory alone in the ancient world led to inaccurate conceptualiz

Defining Optimal Vaccine Features for Pandemic Preparedness: an Individual-Based Model Bridging Within- and Between-Host Dynamics.

Disease X, a yet-to-be-identified pathogen of pandemic potential, underscores the urgency of proactive surveillance and preparedness. Developing prototype vaccine for representative pathogens is key to this effort. In alignment with the "100 Day Mission" to ensure equitable vaccine access, this study aims to identify desirable vaccine features needed to control future pathogens outbreaks, possibly SARS-CoV-2 type. We developed an individual-based transmission model integrating viral load and antibody kinetics to examine combinations of the virus's basic reproduction number (R0) and vaccine cha

Vaccination for communicable endemic diseases: optimal allocation of initial and booster vaccine doses.

For some communicable endemic diseases (e.g., influenza, COVID-19), vaccination is an effective means of preventing the spread of infection and reducing mortality, but must be augmented over time with vaccine booster doses. We consider the problem of optimally allocating a limited supply of vaccines over time between different subgroups of a population and between initial versus booster vaccine doses, allowing for multiple booster doses. We first consider an SIS model with interacting population groups and four different objectives: those of minimizing cumulative infections, deaths, life years

The optimal age of vaccination against dengue in Brazil based on serotype-specific forces of infection derived from serological data.

In this paper, we study a single serotype transmission model of dengue to determine the optimal vaccination age for Dengvaxia. The transmission dynamics are modelled with an age-dependent force of infection. The force of infection for each serotype is derived from the serological profile of dengue in Brazil without serotype distinction and from serotype-specific reported cases. The risk due to an infection is measured by the probability of requiring hospitalization based on Brazilian Ministry of Health data. The optimal vaccination age is determined for any number and combination of the four d

An epidemic model for an evolving pathogen with strain-dependent immunity.

Between pandemics, the influenza virus exhibits periods of incremental evolution via a process known as antigenic drift. This process gives rise to a sequence of strains of the pathogen that are continuously replaced by newer strains, preventing a build up of immunity in the host population. In this paper, a parsimonious epidemic model is defined that attempts to capture the dynamics of evolving strains within a host population. The 'evolving strains' epidemic model has many properties that lie in-between the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible and the Susceptible-Infected-Removed epidemic models

Comparison of the Therapeutic Effects of Tension Band with Cannulated Screw and Tension Band with Kirschner Wire on Patella Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Patella fracture accounts for 1% of bone injury, of which anatomical reduction is of great significance to the recovery. Tension band with cannulated screw and Kirschner wire is commonly used methods for the treatment of displaced patella fracture. However, there is still some controversy on the clinical efficacy of the two treatment methods. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at comparing the therapeutic effects of the cannulated screw and Kirschner wire tension bands on patella fracture and at providing more data basis for clinical selection of treatment methods for patella fracture.

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Error Detection During Simple Arithmetic Processing: An Electroencephalography Study.

BACKGROUND: Arithmetic is the domain of academic achievement most consistently related to prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Error detection, an important aspect of arithmetic processing, can be examined in a mathematical verification task. Electroencephalographic (EEG) studies using such tasks have shown bursts of synchronized theta-band activity in response to errors. We assessed this activity for error detection in adolescents with PAE and typically developing (TD) matched controls. We predicted that the PAE group would show smaller theta bursts during error detection and weaker responses dep

Computational Prediction of the Combined Effect of CRT and LVAD on Cardiac Electromechanical Delay in LBBB and RBBB.

Two case reports showed that the combination of CRT and LVAD benefits the end-stage heart failure patients with prolonged QRS interval significantly. In one of the reports, the patient had the LVAD removed due to the recovery of the heart function. However, the quantification of the combined devices has yet to be conducted. This study aimed at computationally predicting the effects of CRT-only or combined with LVAD on electromechanical behaviour in the failing ventricle with left bundle branch blocked (LBBB) and right bundle branch blocked (RBBB) conditions. The subjects are normal sinus rhyth

Host contact structure is important for the recurrence of Influenza A.

An important characteristic of influenza A is its ability to escape host immunity through antigenic drift. A novel influenza A strain that causes a pandemic confers full immunity to infected individuals. Yet when the pandemic strain drifts, these individuals will have decreased immunity to drifted strains in the following seasonal epidemics. We compute the required decrease in immunity so that a recurrence is possible. Models for influenza A must make assumptions on the contact structure on which the disease spreads. By considering local stability of the disease free equilibrium via computatio

Cortical thickness, stance control, and arithmetic skill: An exploratory study in premanifest Huntington disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder most commonly manifesting in adulthood. Identification of biomarkers tracking neurodegeneration before the onset of motor symptoms is important for future interventional studies. Our study aimed to contribute in the phenotypic characterization of the premanifest HD phase. METHODS: 28 premanifest subjects (preHD), 25 age-matched controls, and 12 manifest HD patients were enrolled for the study. The participants underwent a multimodal protocol including cognitive evaluations, arithmetic ability test, posturography, c

A periodic disease transmission model with asymptomatic carriage and latency periods.

In this paper, the global dynamics of a periodic disease transmission model with two delays in incubation and asymptomatic carriage periods is investigated. We first derive the model system with a general nonlinear incidence rate function by stage-structure. Then, we identify the basic reproduction ratio [Formula: see text] for the model and present numerical algorithm to calculate it. We obtain the global attractivity of the disease-free state when [Formula: see text] and discuss the disease persistence when [Formula: see text]. We also explore the coexistence of endemic state in the nonauton

Decreased cerebellar-cerebral connectivity contributes to complex task performance.

The cerebellum's role in nonmotor processes is now well accepted, but cerebellar interaction with cerebral targets is not well understood. Complex cognitive tasks activate cerebellar, parietal, and frontal regions, but the effective connectivity between these regions has never been tested. To this end, we used psycho-physiological interactions (PPI) analysis to test connectivity changes of cerebellar and parietal seed regions in complex (2-digit by 1-digit multiplication, e.g., 12 × 3) vs. simple (1-digit by 1-digit multiplication, e.g., 4 × 3) task conditions ("complex - simple"). For cerebel
