Cholesterol granuloma in the paranasal sinuses is rare. It is more common in the mastoid antrum and temporal bone air cells in chronic middle ear disease. A case of bilateral maxillary sinus cholesterol granuloma that mimics chronic maxillary sinusitis is reported. This is the first reported case of cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus in the Malaysian Literature.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the maxillary sinus mucosal thickening and to associate them with odontogenic conditions using cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT images of 294 patients (143 female, 151 males; age range 18-78 years) with 588 maxillary sinuses were evaluated retrospectively. The anatomic relationship between maxillary sinuses and teeth was determined and classified. The presence of root canal fillings and the periapical lesions of these teeth was also recorded. Sinus mucosal thickenings were classified as grade 1 (normal) (< 2 mm),

When medical management fails to control the symptoms of chronic sinusitis, surgical intervention is frequently considered. The more commonly recommended procedures include tonsilectomy and adenoidectomy, adenoidectomy alone, maxillary sinus irrigation, and nasal antral windows. These procedures have not undergone meticulous prospective evaluation or documentation of chronic sinusitis. It has only recently become known that plain sinus x-ray films are frequently misleading, and there has been a tendency to completely ignore ethmoid disease. Adenoidectomy has been frequently recommended; howeve

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic pathology is one of the most common causes of odontogenic sinusitis, and its evaluation is challenging. Omission of periapical lesions in diagnostic process leads to recurrent sinusitis after cessation of medical therapy.
METHODS: Sixty-one symptomatic patients presented with odontogenic sinusitis with periapical lesions of teeth adjacent to the maxillary sinus were included in the study. Symptoms evaluated with SNOT-22 and OHIP-14 questionnaires were compared to signs during endoscopic and radiological evaluation.
RESULTS: Coexistence of odontogenic sinusitis with n

Several recent studies have labelled the anterior ethmoid as the main source of chronic and/or recurrent sinusitis in the entire paranasal sinus system. In an attempt to identify other possible patterns of developing sinusitis, 1,345 computed tomographies of neurological and neurosurgical patients with no previous history of paranasal sinusitis were evaluated. These scans were made between 1985 and 1989 in the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University of Freiburg. Seventy-five of these studies revealed evidence of inflammatory changes. In 57 scans maxillary sinus disease was evident, while in 46

BACKGROUND: There are few studies measuring the dimensions of the maxillary sinus, being mostly based on computed tomography imaging and rarely being based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The aim of this study was to measure the 3D osseous and soft tissue defined volume and surface area of the maxillary sinus. Further, possible associations with patient-specific and sinus-related variables were evaluated.
METHODS: A total of 128 maxillary sinuses in 64 patients were analyzed using cone-beam computed tomography data. Surface area and volume of the osseus maxillary sinuses as well as o

Chronic maxillary sinusitis is common in children with respiratory allergy and is associated with increased morbidity. The bacteriology of chronic sinus disease in these children has not been adequately evaluated. Between May 1987 and January 1988, 12 children (aged 3 to 9 years), all with documented respiratory allergy and chronic respiratory symptoms consistent with chronic sinusitis (greater than 30 days), were fully evaluated. History, physical examination, complete blood count, nasal smear, and Waters x-ray were done. All patients had opacification of one or both maxillary sinuses, failed…

Radiopacity in the maxillary sinus can be observed in various conditions, such as in the presence of lesions in the maxillary sinus or as a sequela of maxillary sinus surgery. This report describes the case of a 57-year-old female patient who had no previous history of surgical treatment or traumatic injury of the nose or maxillary sinus. Both maxillary sinuses were indistinguishable on panoramic radiography and showed signs of radiopacity. Computed tomography images revealed that the maxillary sinuses were filled with bony tissue and exhibited signs of sinus mucosal thickening. Biopsy results

The morphometric analysis of maxillary sinus was recently presented as a helpful instrument for sex determination. The aim of the present study was to examine the volume and surface of the fully dentate, partial, and complete edentulous maxillary sinus depending on the sex. Computed tomography data from 276 patients were imported in DICOM format via special virtual planning software, and surfaces (mm) and volumes (mm) of maxillary sinuses were measured. In sex-specific comparisons (women vs men), statistically significant differences for the mean maxillary sinus volume and surface were found b

A-mode ultrasound (A-US) is a simple, non-invasive and non-ionizing method for detecting fluid or even mucosal swelling in inflamed maxillary and frontal sinuses. A-US has been shown to be a quite reliable tool in the diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis. However, controversy still exists over the reliability of A-US in detecting fluid retention or mucosal swelling in patients suffering from chronic polypous rhinosinusitis or in transantrally operated maxillary sinuses. We have compared the results of maxillary sinus A-US with computed tomography (CT) images in a selected series of chronic p…

This publication is designed to familiarize practicing physicians and otorhinolaryngologists with the technique for the probing of the maxillary sinus. The authors propose to use a 9 cm long S-shaped cannula of original construction for the probing and rinsing the maxillary sinus. The technique of this procedure and anatomical landmarks that facilitate probing are illustrated in the figures. The probing of the maxillary sinus is performed as the main method for the treatment of acute sinusitis and exacerbation of chronic sinusitis. The application of forced drainage of natural pathways (FDNP)

We analyzed atelectasic processes occurring in the maxillary sinus. Several publications in the literature have tempted to analyze the pathogenesis. Clinically the processes are often silent and only revealed when the major opthalmological complication, enophthalmia, becomes patent. In other cases there is a long history of chronic sinusitis. There is a spectacular retraction of the maxillary sinus walls leading to collapse of the orbital floor and enophthalmia. We report four cases of maxillary sinusitis with atelectasia of the sinus walls at different stages of progression. These observation…

The upper posterior teeth are usually in close relation to the maxillary sinus (MS). This proximity may lead to serious complications throughout different dental procedures. Early diagnosis and management play a significant role in preventing the sequelae of sinusitis and/or cysts. This article presented an extremely unusual case of barbed broach (BB) displacement into the MS, during endodontic treatment, together with the optimal surgical management. Searching the databases has revealed that it was be the first case reported in the literature. It seemed that the modified Caldwell-Luc approach

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the treatment required for a patient affected by chronic maxillary sinusitis following a sinus grafting procedure with an alloplastic material. Sinusitis was not the consequence of migration of alloplastic material into the maxillary sinus, but rather the consequence of overfilling the subantral space followed by obstruction of the ostium. The treatment involved removal of the alloplastic material and correction of the ostium obstruction via a nasal endoscopic approach.

A 48-year-old man visited the emergency department of our hospital with swelling of the left upper and lower eyelids from the day before. On the first examination, he had severe swelling of the left upper and lower eyelids, proptosis, and chemosis. Left intraocular pressure was 33 mmHg. Computed tomographic images showed an orbital abscess in the anterosuperolateral orbital space, maxillary and ethmoidal sinusitis, and dacryocystitis. The orbital abscess was not contiguous to maxillary and ethmoidal sinusitis and dacryocystitis. Ground-glass appearance was seen in the frontal, maxillary, and e

Water's view plain film radiography was compared with ultrasonography in the diagnosis and follow-up of acute maxillary sinusitis in 85 children (170 sinuses). At the first visit, the concordance of the two modalities was 91%, but 20 days later, when the symptoms and signs had disappeared, it was only 76%. At the latter date, the concordance between radiography and clinical findings was 71% and between sonography and clinical findings, 93%. The two modalities studied appear to be equally useful in the initial diagnosis of acute maxillary sinusitis. The loss of back-wall echo correlates well wi…
