Maxillofacial Bone Fractures in Children and Adolescents in Saudi Arabia: A Systematic Review.

Facial injuries, including maxillofacial trauma (MFT), are common in children and adolescents due to their age and bone maturation stage. Children's injuries are less common than adults' due to parental supervision and the flexibility of the facial bone. Causes of maxillofacial bone fractures (MFBF) vary based on socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental factors. Management of MFBF in children and adolescents should consider their growth and development stage. A systematic review is needed to understand the prevalence, pattern, and distribution of MFBF in Saudi Arabia. This systematic review

[Advances in Molecular Regulatory Mechanisms of Jaw Repair and Reconstruction].

Jawbone injuries resulting from trauma, diseases, and surgical resections are commonly seen in clinical practice, necessitating precise and effective strategies for repair and reconstruction to restore both function and aesthetics. The precise and effective repair and the reconstruction of jawbone injuries pose a significant challenge in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, owing to the unique biomechanical characteristics and physiological functions of the jawbone. The natural repair process following jawbone injuries involves stages such as hematoma formation, inflammatory response,

Impact of COVID19 on Maxillofacial Fractures in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. Review of 296 Patients Treated With Statistical Comparison of the Two-Year Pre-COVID19 and COVID19.

The aim of this study was to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology of maxillofacial trauma in a regional trauma … 9 on maxillo-facial trauma in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. A decrease in the number of Maxillofacial injuries related to road traffic accidents can be demonstrated as the benefit of lockdown, however, a significant increase in the number of physical assaults shows how isolation and restrictions have had a highly negative psychological impact on society.

[The development of posttraumatic maxillary sinusitis due to transconjunctival penetration of a foreign body with a fracture of the lower wall of the orbit].

The article presents a clinical example of the course of posttraumatic acute purulent sinusitis with reactive soft tissue phenomena due to the previous injury of the orbit by a foreign body, the introduction of the latter into orbit and the maxillary sinus result in a fracture of the lower wall of the orbit. A feature of the injury is the penetration of a foreign body through the conjunctiva of the lower eyelid and lower conjunctival fornix, without damaging the skin. This case is professionally interesting for both young doctors and experienced specialists in otolaryngology, ophthalmology, ma

HoloTrauma 3X Triadic AI Co reasoning for robot assisted emergency maxillofacial reconstruction.

Maxillofacial trauma accounts for 8-12% of emergency department visits. Temporomandibular joint injuries and complex facial fractures are common causes of airway emergencies. Presently, no protocols exist to simultaneously evaluate airway patency, skeletal integrity, or occlusal function. We created HoloTrauma 3X, which uses vision-language models to comprehensively evaluate the occlusion-bone-airway triad in emergency settings. Evaluating HoloTrauma 3X on 8427 trauma patients, integrating publicly available datasets from 12 institutions and clinical data from three participating hospitals acr

Jehovah's Witness: a management dilemma in severe maxillofacial trauma.

The fundamentalist beliefs of a Jehovah's Witness can create major clinical and medicolegal problems when blood or blood products are needed to sustain life. The continuing expansion of Jehovah's Witnesses (1/4 million in UK; 4 million worldwide) means that encounters with the sect and surgeons in clinically critical situations are likely to increase. This paper describes such a case in which a 24-year-old male died from maxillofacial injuries because transfusion was denied. The special clinical and ethical management criteria are emphasized and the legal vulnerability of the clinician is disc…

Prosthodontic rehabilitation of a patient with total avulsion of the maxilla: a clinical report.

Patients with complete avulsion of the palate may require extensive surgical and prosthodontic rehabilitation. The prosthesis should replace not only missing teeth but also lost soft tissues and bone, including the hard palate, residual alveolar ridges, and in some situations, the soft palate. This clinical report describes the prosthetic rehabilitation, after appropriate surgical options had been exhausted, of a patient with bilateral traumatic avulsion of the maxilla.

The Epidemiology and Management of Maxillofacial Fractures at a Tertiary Care Hospital in a Conflict-Torn Region in Somalia.

The etiology of maxillofacial fractures (MFFs) varies according to the geographical location and density of the population. This study aimed to analyze the etiology, pattern, and treatment of MFFs. Epidemiological characteristics and treatment modalities of MFFs have never been evaluated in Somalia. The study included 45 patients who were operated on for MFFs at a tertiary care hospital in Somalia (2018-2019). Patient demographics, fracture causes, types, associated non-facial injuries, treatment modalities, and hospitalization-time were evaluated. The most common etiological factors of the MF

Jaw injuries of independence victims from the 1991 War in Croatia.

In the aetiology of maxillofacial injuries, car accidents, violence, sports injuries and lately war injuries are frequently mentioned. The purpose of this study was to exhibit and analyse types of jaw injuries on bodies exhumed from massive and individual graves located in regions temporarily occupied during the War in Croatia that lasted from 1991 to 1995. The sample was the post-mortal documentation of the orofacial region (set of teeth, photographs, radiographic images) of 1068 victims exhumed from massive grave sites in Croatia. The jaw traumatism was analysed on the whole sample as well a…

The spectrum of facial fractures in motor vehicle accidents: an MDCT study of 374 patients.

Road traffic accidents are a major health problem worldwide resulting frequently in maxillofacial injuries. The purpose of the study was to assess the incidence and spectrum of facial fractures in patients involved in a motor vehicle accident (MVA). Using picture archiving and communication system, all requests for suspected facial trauma were retrieved during a 62-month period; 374 met the inclusion criteria. Two researchers interpreted the multidetector computed tomography images by consensus. The motor vehicles involved were divided into two groups: those involving a passenger car or a larg…

Panniculitis ossificans traumatica: an unusual presentation.

We describe a patient with panniculitis ossificans traumatica that arose adjacent to the mandible. Panniculitis ossificans traumatica is an unusual form of heterotopic calcification that develops within subcutaneous fat as a result of injury. There have been few reported cases, and we know of none in the maxillofacial region despite the frequency of trauma to this region. As a result few treatment protocols exist. We describe an experience with its diagnosis and management.

Nuclear dacryoscintigraphy: its role in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Obstruction of the lacrimal drainage apparatus may result in excessive tearing or epiphora. This may occur as a result of a traumatic injury or accumulation of debris, mucus, or pus. In nuclear dacryoscintigraphy, a radioactive solution is introduced into the conjunctival sac by pipette and allowed to follow the flow of the tear solution through the lacrimal drainage system. This article will review normal lacrimal anatomy and indications for nuclear dacryoscintigraphy in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Bilateral traumatic hypoglossal nerve transection in a blast injury.

BACKGROUND: The hypoglossal nerve supplies motor function to the tongue. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 21-year-old man was injured in a blast injury to his mandible, resulting in severe maxillofacial hemorrhaging. Irreversible injury was evident from lack of improvement to tongue; patient underwent transplantation by end-to-end coaptation of right injured nerve 6 months after injury, with subsequent repair to left nerve 2 months later. At 11-year follow up, there was acceptable force and normal motor activity. Only speech, mastication, and swallowing did not return to normal despite prolonged physiothe

Orofacial manifestations of high-rise syndrome in cats: a retrospective study of 84 cases.

Medical records of cats with high-rise trauma were reviewed to document the prevalence and clinical manifestations of orofacial injury. Cats were presented over a 10-year period from January 2000 to December 2009. Signalment, weight, number of stories fallen, and survival data were recorded in 84 cats and physical examination findings were obtained from 83 cats. Fourteen of these cats were examined by veterinarians of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service. Mean age was 37-months. Mean distance fallen was 2.65 stories, and in the majority of cases the substrate the cat fell on was not recorded

Orofacial injuries due to trauma following motor vehicle collisions: part 2. Temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) following motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) may result from direct orofacial trauma but also occur in patients with whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) without such trauma. TMDs may not be identified at the time of first assessment, but may develop weeks or more after the MVC. TMDs in WAD appear to occur predominantly in females and can be associated with regional or widespread pain. TMDs following MVCs may respond poorly to independent therapy and may be best managed using multidisciplinary approaches.

Gunshot injury to the face with a missile lodged in the upper cervical spine without neurological deficit.

An unusual case of facial gunshot injury with the missile lodged in the cervical spinal canal, but without any neurological impairment is reported. The extent of tissue damage and missile track termination in a male patient who sustained gunshot trauma to the face was assessed by plain radiography and by CT scans. The patient was treated conservatively and observed for clinical manifestations of neurological deficit for 3 weeks. CT of the head and neck performed 13 years after injury with the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of skeletal elements revealed healed fractures of the right nasa

[Nerve injury during mandibular third molar surgery. The importance of preoperative diagnosis and surgical skill].

A 26-year-old woman was referred by a dentist to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon after an unsuccessful attempt to remove a mandibular third molar. A panoramic radiograph showed the remaining root of the third molar and the patient suffered from insensitivity of the lower lip. The root of the third molar was removed surgically. The sensitivity of the lip recovered completely within three months. Injury of the inferior alveolar nerve and the lingual nerve is a serious complication after mandibular third molar removal. The inferior alveolar nerve is at risk for injury if the third molar root is
