Valence-related impairments in the retrieval of specific autobiographical memories amongst patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: People with schizophrenia have difficulty recalling specific autobiographical events from their past. However, the nature of this difficulty (e.g., whether these problems are only for memories that are negative or positive) and the mechanisms associated with it remain poorly understood. METHODS: The present investigation asked patients with schizophrenia (n = 91) and healthy controls (n = 109) to recall memories related to several positive and negative cue words. Participants also completed self-report measures of rumination and depressive symptoms and a measure of verbal fluency

Internal reinstatement hides cuing effects in source memory tasks.

Reinstating source details at test often has no impact on source memory. We tested the proposition that participants internally reinstate source cues when such cues are not provided by the experimenter, thus making the external cues redundant. Participants studied words paired with either a male or a female face and were later asked to specify the gender of the face studied with each word. To disrupt the ability to internally reinstate sources, some participants saw eight male faces and eight female faces throughout the study list (multiple-face condition), making it difficult to determine whi

An atypical presentation of primary central nervous system lymphoma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) involving the choroid plexus is exceedingly rare. The differential diagnosis for choroid plexus enhancing lesions in addition to lymphoma includes infections, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, papilloma, meningioma, subependymoma, and metastatic lesions. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 71-year-old man presented with 3 days of episodic memory loss and gait disturbance. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed homogenously enhancing lesions with mildly restricted diffusion and T2 hypointensity in the lateral ventricles, as well as T2 hyperintensity and enh

Hippocampal contributions to recollection in retrograde and anterograde amnesia.

Lesions restricted to the hippocampal formation and/or extended hippocampal system (hippocampal formation, fornix, mammillary bodies, and anterior thalamic nuclei) can disrupt conscious recollection in anterograde amnesia, while leaving familiarity-based memory relatively intact. Familiarity may be supported by extra-hippocampal medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures. Within-task dissociations in recognition memory best exemplify this distinction in anterograde amnesia. The authors report for the first time comparable dissociations within recognition memory in retrograde amnesia. An amnesic pat

An experience sampling study on spontaneous future thinking and prospective memory.

Prospective memory (PM) concerns the ability to fulfil intentions in the future. Research suggested that PM is associated with spontaneous cognition. However, the role of spontaneous thoughts during intention retention remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate prospective bias in spontaneous thoughts specifically related to pending intentions, and whether these thoughts were associated with PM performance. Healthy young adults completed the Prospective Activity Fluency Task to generate daily PM tasks, and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire to assess everyday P

How do we remember the future? A systematic review of ERP components in focal and nonfocal prospective memory tasks.

Prospective memory (PM) enables individuals to remember and execute intended future actions, which is essential for everyday functioning. This systematic review synthesizes electrophysiological evidence from event-based PM tasks in healthy young adults, with particular emphasis on how cue focality shapes the temporal and spatial dynamics of neural processing. Following PRISMA guidelines, 34 EEG studies were reviewed to identify convergent event-related potential (ERP) signatures associated with preparatory attentional biasing, candidate cue detection, intention retrieval, and post-retrieval co

Unpacking the Medial Temporal Lobe: Separating Recollection and Familiarity.

Our understanding of how the medial temporal lobe (MTL) contributes to human cognition has advanced enormously over the past half a century. My work in the 1990s characterizing the role of recollection and familiarity processes in episodic memory led me to study the MTL's role in these two memory processes. In the current paper, I provide a personal commentary in which I describe the motivating ideas, as well as the invaluable impact of mentors, colleagues, and students that led to a series of studies showing that conscious recollection is critically dependent on the hippocampus, whereas famil

A neural index reflecting the amount of cognitive resources available during memory encoding: A model-based approach.

Humans have a limited amount of cognitive resources to process various cognitive operations at a given moment. The Source of Activation Confusion model of episodic memory proposes that resources are consumed during each processing, and once depleted, they need time to recover gradually. This has been supported by a series of behavioral findings in the past. However, the neural substrate of the resources is not known. In the present study, over an existing electroencephalogram data set of a free recall task (Kahana et al., 2022), we provided a neural index reflecting the amount of cognitive res

A Learned Map for Places and Concepts in the Human Medial Temporal Lobe.

Distinct lines of research in both humans and animals point to a specific role of the hippocampus in both spatial and episodic memory function. The discovery of concept cells in the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe (MTL) regions suggests that the MTL maps physical and semantic spaces with a similar neural architecture. Here, we studied the emergence of such maps using MTL microwire recordings from 20 patients (9 female, 11 male) navigating a virtual environment featuring salient landmarks with established semantic meaning. We present several key findings. The array of local fie

Script-driven imagery of socially salient autobiographical memories in major depressive disorder.

Cues of social rejection and affiliation represent proximal risk and protective factors in the onset and maintenance of depression. Such cues are thought to activate an evolutionarily primed neuro-cognitive alarm system, alerting the agent to the benefits of inclusion or the risk of social exclusion within social hierarchies focused on ensuring continued access to resources. In tandem, autobiographical memory is thought to be over-general and negatively biased in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) which can contribute to maintenance and relapse. How memories of social rejection and affiliation ar

Mnemonic discrimination deficits in multidimensional schizotypy.

Current developmental psychopathology models indicate that schizophrenia can be understood as the most extreme expression of a multidimensional continuum of symptoms and impairment referred to as schizotypy. In nondisordered adults, schizotypy predicts risk for developing schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology. Schizophrenia is associated with disruptions in detecting subtle differences between objects, which is linked to hippocampal dysfunction. These disruptions have been shown in the Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST) when patients are less likely to reject lures that are similar but not identi

Neural patterns differentiate traumatic from sad autobiographical memories in PTSD.

For people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recall of traumatic memories often displays as intrusions that differ profoundly from processing of 'regular' negative memories. These mnemonic features fueled theories speculating a unique cognitive state linked with traumatic memories. Yet, to date, little empirical evidence supports this view. Here we examined neural activity of patients with PTSD who were listening to narratives depicting their own memories. An intersubject representational similarity analysis of cross-subject semantic content and neural patterns revealed a differentia

Rumination and inhibition in task switching: no evidence for an association.

Rumination is typically defined as the perseverative focus of attention on negative internal thoughts and feelings, which can increase the risk of developing - and severity once developed - of depression. It is thought the perseveration is caused by a deficit in inhibitory control in ruminators. Congruent with this hypothesis, estimates of inhibition in task switching - the n-2 task repetition cost - are negatively associated with estimates of rumination. However, estimates of individual differences of n-2 task repetition costs are hampered by (a) measurement error caused by trial-wise variati

Serious Games for Learning Among Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Learning disabilities are among the major cognitive impairments caused by aging. Among the interventions used to improve learning among older adults are serious games, which are participative electronic games designed for purposes other than entertainment. Although some systematic reviews have examined the effectiveness of serious games on learning, they are undermined by some limitations, such as focusing on older adults without cognitive impairments, focusing on particular types of serious games, and not considering the comparator type in the analysis. OBJECTIVE: This review aim

Dorsolateral prefrontal activation in depressed young adults with and without suicidal ideation during an emotional autobiographical memory task: A fNIRS study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have proved that there is a strong association between dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and mood symptoms. This study aimed at using functional near-infrared spectroscopy technology to invest brain activity in dlPFC of depressed individuals with and without suicidal ideation during emotional autobiographical memory test, and to understand their differences in brain cognitive mechanisms. It is helpful to improve our ability to predict and subsequently to prevent suicide. METHODS: 85 young adults participated in the study by a simple random sampling method, with health

Hippocampal spatial view cells for memory and navigation, and their underlying connectivity in humans.

Hippocampal and parahippocampal gyrus spatial view neurons in primates respond to the spatial location being looked at. The representation is allocentric, in that the responses are to locations "out there" in the world, and are relatively invariant with respect to retinal position, eye position, head direction, and the place where the individual is located. The underlying connectivity in humans is from ventromedial visual cortical regions to the parahippocampal scene area, leading to the theory that spatial view cells are formed by combinations of overlapping feature inputs self-organized base

Individual differences in revising the life story-Personality and event characteristics influence change in the autobiographical meaning of life events.

OBJECTIVE: Repeated autobiographical narratives have recently received increased attention as measures of the stability of narrative identity. We propose that one way to map change in life narratives is to rate the degree to which the autobiographical meaning of renarrated events changes. We aimed to test the influence of age, traits (openness, extraversion), and event characteristics on how much autobiographical meaning changes. METHOD: In waves 3 and 4 of the MainLife study, 123 participants (15-72 years) narrated their lives twice, 4 years apart. Life events that were told both times were

Amyloid and anatomical correlates of executive functioning in middle-aged offspring of patients with late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

A traditional hallmark of cognitive impairment associated with late-onset Alzheimer´s disease (LOAD) is episodic memory impairment. However, early alterations have been identified in brain regions associated with executive function in asymptomatic, middle-age offspring of patients with LOAD (O-LOAD) compared to those with no family history. We hypothesized that executive function among O-LOAD would correlate with structural and amyloid brain imaging differently from those without a family history of LOAD (control subjects, CS). Executive function, cortical thickness, and in-vivo Aβ deposits we

Observing the self, avoiding the experience? The role of the observer perspective in autobiographical recall and its relationship to depression in adolescence.

The tendency to adopt an observer perspective (OP) when recalling autobiographical memories has been shown to be related to both avoidance and depression in adults. Very little research has examined this relationship in adolescents, however, and none of this work has adopted a longitudinal paradigm. This is an important gap in light of the marked escalation in rates of depression across the adolescent period. The current study therefore examined the concurrent and longitudinal (one year) relationships between observer perspective in the Minimal Instruction Autobiographical Memory Test (Mi-AMT;

Serial position effects in the Logical Memory Test: Loss of primacy predicts amyloid positivity.

BACKGROUND: Story recall is a frequently used neuropsychological test of episodic memory with clinical populations and for screening participants in drug trials for Alzheimer's disease. However, it is unclear at this stage which underlying mechanisms confer the test its sensitivity. In this paper, we examined serial position effects, that is, better recall for items learned early and late on a list, in story recall, and their usefulness to predict early changes associated with neurodegenerative markers. METHODS: We analysed data from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention. First, w
