Between 1966 and 1976, 148 out of 162 patients with obstetrically acquired vesico-vaginal fistulae were successfully repaired in Lagos University Teaching Hospital. The reproductive performance of these patients after repair has been reviewed with special regard to menstruation, satisfactory coitus and childbearing. Extra-adrenal paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors that may cause hypertension and reproductive dysfunction in adolescents. We report a 16-year-old girl with uncontrolled hypertension and secondary amenorrhea caused by a functional Organ of Zuckerkandl paraganglioma. Surgical excision restored normal blood pressure and menstruation, highlighting reversible catecholamine-induced hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis suppression.

The purpose of this study was to examine the bleeding patterns of 234 Norplant users during 5 years of use and to identify the bleeding patterns of users who conceived. During the first year of use, 26.6% of users had regular bleeding cycles, 66.3% had irregular cycles, and 7.1% were amenorrheic. It is known that women who smoke cigarettes and use oral contraceptives are more likely to have breakthrough bleeding than women who do not smoke. In this article, we review possible mechanisms by which cigarette smoke and its constituents may contribute to irregular bleeding, highlight differences in the activities of nicotine and cigarette smoke, and postulate further studies in the area.
