CONCLUSIONS: The combined endoscope-assisted translabyrinthine subtemporal keyhole approach can expose the internal auditory canal, cerebellopontine, and inferior colliculus satisfactorily in the same surgical setting. As a minimally invasive approach, this can be considered an effective method for removal of vestibular schwannoma and auditory midbrain implantation in the same surgical setting, while avoiding retraction of the cerebellum and serious adverse events and complications.

A 34-year-old man presented with transient downward gaze paralysis and impairment of convergence together with prominent psychic disturbances. Cranial CT and MRI clearly demonstrated a symmetric infarction extending from the bilateral thalamus to the rostral medial midbrain. The existence of downward gaze paralysis following ischemic stroke is contributory to the diagnosis of not only the location of but also the responsible artery for the infarction.

We report the clinical and computed tomography findings in two patients with small mesencephalic hematomas. Thirty-eight patients with brain injury and mesencephalic coma, or a Glasgow score of less than 5, were treated routinely with Thiopental administered by electric syringe for a mean duration of 4 days. Follow up review criteria were based on clinical computed tomography and electroencephalographic data, as well as results of monitoring of intracranial pressure and assay of blood barbiturate levels. Global results indicated a mortality of 55.3% and reintegration of 34.2% of the patients. Results as a function of the different parameters of surveillance are discussed.

The brain weight - body weight relation was studied in 91 specimens of the order Cyclostomata (69 Petromyzonoidea, 22 Myxinoidea) and compared to data from other vertebrates. The interspecific slope of cyclostomes differs from that of other vertebrates (a = 0.23 in petromyzonts, a = 0.41 in myxonoids). Differences observed in the relationship of brain parts to body weight in the two suborders were interpreted as due to sense organ bound specializations. In a comparative diagram of the brain weight - body weight relation in vertebrates the cyclostomes take the lowest position.
