Galvanic replacement-induced preparation of bloom-like Pt23Ni77 for methanol coupled efficient hydrogen production.

Galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) leverages the difference in metal reduction potentials to regulate the structure of nanomaterials. The c … redistribution of elements on the catalyst surface, which provides superior performance in both the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The uniform distribution of Pt on a three-dimensional transition metal Ni substrate allows for the complete exposure of the noble metal to the catalyst surface. This distribution increa …

Reactivity Switch of Platinum with Gallium: From Reverse Water Gas Shift to Methanol Synthesis.

The development of efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol using "green" H2 is foreseen to be a key step to close the carbon cycle. In this study, we show that small and narrowly distributed alloyed PtGa nanoparticles supported on silica, prepared via a surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) approach, display notable activity for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, reaching a 7.2 molCH3OH h-1 molPt-1 methanol formation rate with a 54% intrinsic CH3OH selectivity. This reactivity sharply contrasts with what is expected for Pt, which favors the reverse water gas shift rea…

Genome-resolved metagenomics identifies novel active microbes in biogeochemical cycling within methanol-enriched soil.

Metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs), generated from sequenced 13C-labelled DNA from 13C-methanol enriched soils, were binned using an ensemble approach. This method produced a significantly larger number of higher-quality MAGs compared to direct binning approaches. These MAGs represent both the primary methanol utilizers and the secondary utilizers labelled via cross-feeding and predation on the labelled methylotrophs, including numerous uncultivated taxa. Analysis of these MAGs enabled the identification of multiple metabolic pathways within these active taxa that have climatic relevance rela…

Biomimetic Frustrated Lewis Pair Catalysts for Hydrogenation of CO to Methanol at Low Temperatures.

The industrial production of methanol through CO hydrogenation using the Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst requires harsh conditions, and the development of new catalysts with low operating temperatures is highly desirable. In this study, organic biomimetic FLP catalysts with good tolerance to CO poison are theoretically designed. The base-free catalytic reaction contains the 1,1-addition of CO into a formic acid intermediate and the hydrogenation of the formic acid intermediate into methanol. Low-energy spans (25.6, 22.1, and 20.6 kcal/mol) are achieved, indicating that CO can be hydrogenated into methan…

Rationally Designed L12-Pt2RhFe Intermetallic Catalyst with High CO-Tolerance for Alkaline Methanol Electrooxidation.

It is a grand challenge to deep understanding of and precise control over functional sites for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for methanol electrooxidation. Here, an L12-Pt2RhFe intermetallic catalyst with integrated functional components is demonstrated, which exhibits exceptional CO tolerance. The Pt2RhFe/C achieves a superior mass activity of 6.43 A mgPt -1, which is 2.23-fold and 3.53-fold higher than those of PtRu/C and Pt/C. Impressively, the Pt2RhFe/C exhibits a significant enhancement in durability owing to its high CO-tolerance and stability. Density functional theo…

Microwave spectroscopic and computational analyses of the phenylacetylene⋯methanol complex: insights into intermolecular interactions.

The microwave spectra of five isotopologues of phenylacetylene⋯methanol complex, C6H5CCH⋯CH3OH, C6H5CCH⋯CH3OD, C6H5CCH⋯CD3OD, C6H5CCD⋯CH3OH and C6H5CCH⋯13CH3OH, have been observed through Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. Rotational spectra unambiguously unveil a specific structural arrangement characterised by dual interactions between the phenylacetylene and methanol. CH3OH serves as a hydrogen bond donor to the acetylenic π-cloud while concurrently accepting a hydrogen bond from the ortho C-H group of the PhAc moiety. The fitted rotational constants align closely with the structural…

Platinum-Ruthenium Bimetallic Nanoparticle Catalysts Synthesized Via Direct Joule Heating for Methanol Fuel Cells.

Platinum-Ruthenium (PtRu) bimetallic nanoparticles are promising catalysts for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) required by direct methanol fuel cells. However, existing catalyst synthesis methods have difficulty controlling their composition and structures. Here, a direct Joule heating method to yield highly active and stable PtRu catalysts for MOR is shown. The optimized Joule heating condition at 1000 °C over 50 microseconds produces uniform PtRu nanoparticles (6.32 wt.% Pt and 2.97 wt% Ru) with an average size of 2.0 ± 0.5 nanometers supported on carbon black substrates. They have a large…

Ni3C/Ni3S2 Heterojunction Electrocatalyst for Efficient Methanol Oxidation via Dual Anion Co-modulation Strategy.

Enhancing active states on the catalyst surface by modulating the adsorption-desorption properties of reactant species is crucial to optimizing the electrocatalytic activity of transition metal-based nanostructured materials. In this work, an efficient optimization strategy is proposed by co-modulating the dual anions (C and S) in Ni3C/Ni3S2, the heterostructured electrocatalyst, which is prepared via a simple hot-injection method. The presence of Ni3C/Ni3S2 heterojunctions accelerates the charge carrier transfer and promotes the generation of active sites, enabling the heterostructured electr

Potential-driven structural distortion in cobalt phthalocyanine for electrocatalytic CO2/CO reduction towards methanol.

Cobalt phthalocyanine immobilized on carbon nanotube has demonstrated appreciable selectivity and activity for methanol synthesis in electrocatalytic CO2/CO reduction. However, discrepancies in methanol production selectivity and activity between CO2 and CO reduction have been observed, leading to inconclusive mechanisms for methanol production in this system. Here, we discover that the interaction between cobalt phthalocyanine molecules and defects on carbon nanotube substrate plays a key role in methanol production during CO2/CO electroreduction. Through detailed operando X-ray absorption an…

Pt-Ru atomic alloys confined in mesoporous carbon hollow spheres for accelerating methanol oxidation.

Active and durable electrocatalysts are essential for commercializing direct methanol fuel cells. However, Pt-based catalysts, extensively utilized in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), are suffered from resource scarcity and CO poisoning, which degrade MOR activity severely. Herein, Pt1Rux bimetallic catalysts were synthesized by confining Pt1Rux alloys within the shells of mesoporous carbon hollow spheres (MCHS) via a vacuum-assisted impregnation method (Pt1Rux@MCHS). The confinement effect induced by mesoporous carbon hollow spheres resulted in a robust structure of Pt1Ru3@MCHS with an …

CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Pt functionalized Hf-UiO-67 versus Zr-UiO-67.

Sustainable methanol formation from CO2/H2 is potentially a key process in the post-fossil chemical industry. In this study, Hf- and Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with UiO-67 topology, functionalized with Pt nanoparticles, have been tested for CO2 hydrogenation at 30 bar and 170-240°C. The highest methanol formation rate, 14 molmethanol molPt-1 h-1, was obtained over a Hf-based catalyst, compared with the maximum of 6.2 molmethanol molPt-1 h-1 for the best Zr-based analogue. However, changing the node metal did not significantly affect product distribution or apparent activa…

Metal substrate engineering to modulate CO2 hydrogenation to methanol on inverse Zr3O6/CuPd catalysts.

It is well known that the performance of some key catalytic reactions has a strong dependence on metal catalyst surfaces. In the current work, this concept is further extended to the CuPd alloy-supported zirconium oxide inverse catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. A combined DFT and microkinetic simulation study reveal that both the metal substrate surface and the precise exposed Cu or Pd metal atoms on the substrate have a pivotal influence on the catalytic mechanism and performance of the inverse catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Herein, CuPd(100), (111), and (110) surfaces …

Efficient synergism of concentric ring structures and carbon dots for enhanced methanol electro-oxidation.

Developing affordable and reliable electrocatalysts with high activity and stability is crucial for enhancing the practicality of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). An effective and simple strategy of combining the carbon point of N-CDs (0.4 mg mL-1) with NiO/Ni for the fabrication of NiO/Ni-N-CDsV nanocomposites with a three-dimensional concentric core-shell structure was proposed to successfully prepare the electro-oxidation catalyst of methanol. The low cost of Ni-based materials and the conductive N-CDs that improve methanol catalytic performance make the composites an excellent choice as…

Metal-organic framework-derived nanoflower and nanoflake metal oxides as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation.

The energy crisis is the most urgent issue facing contemporary society and needs to be given top priority. As energy consumption rises, environmental pollution is becoming a serious issue. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have emerged as the most promising energy source for a variety of applications such as electric vehicles and portable devices. Unfortunately, the kinetics of methanol oxidation is slow and needs an electrocatalyst to improve the reaction kinetics and the overall fuel cell efficiency. Herein, a straightforward hydrothermal procedure was utilized to prepare copper, nickel, an…

Synthesis of MOF-supported Pt catalyst with high electrochemical oxidation activity for methanol oxidation.

Fuel cells, one of the clean energy sources, is quite remarkable for energy production. In this context, catalysts are needed for the electrochemical reactions of DMFCs (direct methanol fuel cells) to work efficiently. In this study, Pt and Pt@Ti-MOF (Pt@MIL-125) NPs (nanoparticles) catalysts were synthesized by chemical synthesis. The Ti-MOF (MIL-125) structure was synthesized using the solvothermal method, and the effect of Ti-MOF on methanol oxidation was investigated. The results showed that Pt@Ti-MOF NPs provided 9.45 times more electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation compared to…

Transforming carbon dioxide into a methanol surrogate using modular transition metal-free Zintl ions.

Although not the only greenhouse gas, CO2 is the poster child. Unsurprisingly, therefore, there is global interest across industrial and academic research in its removal and subsequent valorisation, including to methanol and its surrogates. Although difficult to study, the heterogenous pnictogens represent one important category of catalytic materials for these conversions; their high crustal abundance and low cost offers advantages in terms of sustainability. Here, Zintl clusters based on these elements are studied as homogenous atom-precise models in CO2 reduction. A family of group 13 funct…

Evaluation and optimization of polycarbonate track-etched (PCTE) membranes for direct methanol fuel cells.

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) offer a promising power source by utilizing liquid-state methanol as fuel, providing easy storage and transportability. Currently, DMFCs commonly employ perfluorosulfonic acid membranes, such as the well-known Nafion membrane, as proton exchange membranes. However, perfluorosulfonic acid membranes have significant drawbacks in DMFCs, including a high crossover rate, substantial swelling, poor thermal stability, and elevated costs. The crossover of methanol fuel to the cathode side is particularly detrimental as it can poison the precious Pt catalyst, leading …

Catalytic Role of Methanol in Anodic Coupling Reactions Involving Alcohol Trapping of Cation Radicals.

In anodic electrosynthesis, cation radicals are often key intermediates that can be highly susceptible to nucleophilic attack and/or deprotonation, with the selectivity of competing pathways dictating product yield. In this work, we computationally investigate the role of methanol in alcohol trapping of enol ether cation radicals for which substantial modulation of the reaction yield by the solvent environment was previously observed. Reaction free energies computed for intramolecular coupling unequivocally demonstrate that the key intramolecular alcohol attack on the oxidized enol ether group…
