OBJECTIVES: The hyperinflammatory state and the viral invasion may result in endothelial dysfunction in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Although a method foreseeing microvascular dysfunction has not been defined yet, studies conducted in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 have demonstrated the presence of endotheliitis. With this study, we aimed to investigate the microvascular circulation in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) by nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC).
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, 25 of whom were diagnosed wit

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Endothelial cell-mediated vasodilatation of cerebral arterioles is impaired in individuals with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). This defect compromises haemodynamics and can lead to hypoxia, microbleeds, inflammation and exaggerated ischaemia-reperfusion injuries. The molecular causes for dysregulation of cerebral microvascular endothelial cells (cECs) in T1D remains poorly defined. This study tests the hypothesis that cECs dysregulation in T1D is triggered by increased generation of the mitochondrial toxin, methylglyoxal, by smooth muscle cells in cerebral arterioles (cSMCs).

Microvascular dysfunction occurs in insulin resistance and/or hyperinsulinaemia. Enhanced uptake of free fatty acids (FFA) and oxidised low-density lipoproteins (oxLDL) may lead to oxidative stress and microvascular dysfunction interacting with CD36, a PPARα/γ-regulated scavenger receptor and long-chain FFA transporter. We investigated CD36 expression and CD36-mediated oxLDL uptake before and after insulin treatment in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HMVECs), ± different types of fatty acids (FA), including palmitic, oleic, linoleic, arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docos

INTRODUCTION: Despite contemporary management, the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in adolescents during the first 2-5 years of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) remains unchanged, underscoring the need to better understand early retinal changes. In this study, we investigated early retinal changes in children with T1DM using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Incorporating a literature review of retinal changes in other age groups, we propose a model sequence of retinal changes in patients with T1DM.
METHODS: In this prospective case-control study, conducted at National Taiwan

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Sub-Tenon anesthesia techniques are commonly employed in ophthalmology. However, there is speculation that these techniques may have hemodynamic effects on the eye, potentially affecting patients with impaired ocular perfusion. This study aims to evaluate the impact of sub-Tenon anesthesia during cataract surgery on retinal vessel density (VD) and perfusion density (PD) in eyes affected by diabetic maculopathy (DM) or retinal vein occlusion (RVO), using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
METHODS: The study included 20 patients receiving sub-Tenon ane

BACKGROUND: Post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a specific subtype of diabetes with an uncertain impact on mortality and morbidity in post-transplant patients. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, but the long-term clinical progression in PTDM is unknown. New technologies are being used to assess pre-clinical signs of retinal changes, such as swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography. The aim of this study was to detect pre-clinical structural and vascular changes in the retina using swept-source-OCT and OCT-

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with neuroaxonal damage. It is the principal driver of non-traumatic disability in young adults. Visual symptoms are common and optic neuritis (ON) may be the revealing feature in up to 30% of cases. Structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) represents a biomarker of central nervous system neurodegeneration in MS. OCT-angiography (OCT-A) is a noninvasive tool allowing the study of retinal vasculature and the detection of microvascular damage in neuro-retinal diseases. In this study, we
