Microbiological profile of adenoid hypertrophy correlates to clinical diagnosis in children.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common condition in childhood, which may be associated with recurring acute otitis media (RAOM), otitis media with effusion (OME), and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). These different clinical characteristics have some clinical overlap; however, they might be explained by distinct immunologic and infectious profiles and result in various histopathologic findings of adenoid specimens. METHODS: A total of 59 children with adenoid hypertrophy undergoing adenoidectomy were studied. Three series of identical adenoid specimens were processed to hematoxyli

[Comparative analysis of the effectiveness of bypass surgery and laser myringotomy used to treat exudative otitis medium].

The objective of the present study was the comparative analysis of the surgical method employed for the treatment of exudative otitis medium, such as bypass surgery and laser myringotomy. The study included 125 patients suffering from the said pathology. The following two methods were used in cases of poor efficiency of conservative therapy: laser myringotomy with the use of a LUMENISc CO2-laser operated at a wavelength of 10.6 mcm with the SurgiTouch scanner and bypass of the tympanic cavity. Each of these methods was applied to treat 38 patients. It was shown that discharge from the treated

Assessment and management of retraction pockets.

This manuscript intends to review types, pathogenesis, associated risk factors, and potential methods of prevention and treatment of the retraction pockets in adults and children. The importance of retraction pockets (RP) lies in loss of original histological and anatomical structure which is associated with development of ossicular chain erosion, cho¬lesteatoma formation and potentially life threatening complications of cholesteatoma. The trans-mucosal exchange each gas in the middle ear (ME) is towards equalizing its partial pressures with the partial pressure in the environ¬ment. MEs that h

Smoke-Free Policies in the World's 50 Busiest Airports - August 2017.

Exposure to secondhand smoke from burning tobacco products causes premature death and disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer among nonsmoking adults and sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, middle ear disease, exacerbated asthma, respiratory symptoms, and decreased lung function in children (1,2). The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke (1). Previous CDC reports on airport smoke-free policies found that most large-hub airports in the United States prohibit smoking (3); however, th

Otological problems in children with Turner's syndrome.

Ear and hearing disorders are common problems among girls and women with Turner's syndrome. During infancy and childhood the girls often suffer from repeated attacks of acute otitis media and later in life the women frequently complain of a rapid onset of social hearing problems due to sensorineural hearing impairment. A study of 56 girls aged 4-15 years with Turner's syndrome was performed to investigate the prevalence of eardrum pathology and hearing impairment in young children and teenagers with Turner's syndrome. A possible relation to karyotype was also investigated. A high prevalence (6

Effect of probiotic lozenges on improvement in tympanometric classification within 12 weeks in children aged 3-6 years with adenoid hypertrophy and otitis media with effusion undergoing non-surgical management: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is common among children aged 3-6 years with adenoid hypertrophy. Restoring middle-ear ventilation and clearing effusion are key goals during non-surgical management, and tympanogram classification serves as the main clinical indicator. The probiotic Streptococcus salivarius K12 (SSK12) can colonize the upper airway and inhibit pathogens, yet randomized trials using tympanogram classification as the primary endpoint are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of daily SSK12 lozenges (≥1×109 CFU) for 12 weeks on tympanogram class

Management of Already Inserted Ventilation Tubes During Pediatric Cochlear Implantation: To Remove or Leave the Tube?

OBJECTIVE: Ventilation tube (VT) insertion is usually recommended before cochlear implantation (CI) in pediatric cochlear implant candidates with recurrent acute otitis media (AOM) or chronic otitis media with effusion (OME). However, there is no consensus on whether the VT is beneficial even after CI, that is, whether the tube should be removed or left in place during CI. This study aimed to assess the effect of tube placement after CI, especially on the incidence of post-CI AOM, in pediatric cochlear implant recipients who had undergone VT insertion before CI because of recurrent AOM or chro

Office Insertion of Tympanostomy Tubes and the Role of Automated Insertion Devices.

OBJECTIVE: Insertion of tubes in an office setting and automated tube insertion devices were identified as high-priority quality improvement opportunities during the update process for the 2013 clinical practice guideline on tympanostomy tubes from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The guideline update group, however, decided to avoid any recommendations on these topics, based on limited research evidence, and instead selected a subset of group members to author this state of the art review, with the goal of facilitating informed decisions in clinical practice. Low cost, easy-to-replicate myringotomy tube insertion simulation model.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation is an established part of modern surgical education. Several training centers have proposed different simulation models for myringotomy tube (MT) placement and validated their effectiveness in medical student and resident training. None is widely used. Early models were simple tubes that lacked important microsurgical elements. Newer simulators are more comprehensive, but are difficult and expensive to build. We present a MT placement simulator that is low cost, easy to construct with basic power tools and allows for acquisition of the most necessary MT placement skill
