In 1984-1985, medical examinations consisting of a chest radiograph, spirometry test, and questionnaire on work history, respiratory symptoms, and smoking history were administered to 1,061 white males who were employed at 31 coal cleaning plants and strip coal mines in the anthracite coal region of northeastern Pennsylvania. This paper reviews the changes in the quality of bone mineral with age and in disease. After a brief review of morphological changes with aging in mammalian bones, microradiography is compared to backscattered electron imaging and their use in bringing out subtle changes in bone mineralization outlined. This review discusses the abnormalities in bone and mineral metabolism encountered in thyroid disorders. Thyroid hormones probably stimulate bone resorption directly, thereby increasing serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations and suppressing serum parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations. Studies of bone and mineral metabolism were made in 22 patients with chronic alcohol abuse and varying degrees of liver damage. Iliac crest biopsies from 56 postmenopausal osteoporotic females with spontaneous compression fractures and decreased total body Ca were compared to similar tissue from 48 normal controls. The occurrence of postgastrectomy bone disease was studied in 42 patients who had been subjected to gastric surgery for duodenal or gastric ulceration 5-7 years earlier. Otological and audiological evaluations were performed on 278 miners claiming compensation for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).
