Re: Treatment of Parasitic Skin Diseases with Dimeticones A New Family of Compounds with a Purely Physical Mode of Action.

The article on use of dimeticone for treatment of epidermal parasitic skin diseases is potentially confusing and misleading because, in a practical sense, only head louse infestation can be treated with this material. Scabies mites are unaffected by silicones and use of dimeticone against other ectoparasites may have unwanted side effects such as anaphylactiform reactions or increased risk of pathogen transmission.

Increased allergic immune response to Sarcoptes scabiei antigens in crusted versus ordinary scabies.

Scabies, a parasitic skin infestation by the burrowing "itch" mite Sarcoptes scabiei, causes significant health problems for children and adults worldwide. Crusted scabies is a particularly severe form of scabies in which mites multiply into the millions, causing extensive skin crusting. The symptoms and signs of scabies suggest host immunity to the scabies mite, but the specific resistant response in humans remains largely uncharacterized. We used 4 scabies mite recombinant proteins with sequence homology to extensively studied house dust mite allergens to investigate a differential immune re

Interspecific parasite exchange in a mixed colony of birds.

Studies of avian host-parasite interactions rarely include consequences of relationships among hosts for either the host or parasite species. In this study, we examine the ectoparasitic burden of adult and nestling European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) and rock sparrows (Petronia petronia) in a mixed colony. We found that (1) each bird species had its own species of lice; (2) hematophagous mites parasitized both adults and nestlings of both bird species; (3) Carnus hemapterus, a common parasite of nestling bee-eaters, also infested rock sparrow nestlings, a species not previously described as

Ectoparasitic assemblages on mormoopid bats (Chiroptera: Mormoopidae) from Puerto Rico.

We performed the first quantitative survey of ectoparasitic assemblages on three species of mormoopid bats living on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico: Mormoops blainvillii Leach (n=40), Pteronotus quadridens Gundlach (n=40), and Pteronotus parnellii Gray (n=9). We examined bats for parasites primarily on 8-10 May and 24-27 July 2002 at Culebrones Cave, near Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Only 50% of M. blainvillii were infested with at least one parasite, compared with 85-100% for Pteronotus; infested individuals of both species of Pteronotus also harbored a greater number of parasites than did M. b

Pathogen exposure patterns among sympatric populations of bighorn sheep, mule deer and cattle.

We sampled sympatric bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis, n = 31), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus, n = 38), and domestic cattle (n = 26) in the San Bernadino Mountains of southern California (USA) for the presence of Psoroptes spp. mites and for serologic evidence of exposure to bluetongue virus (BTV) and Babesia spp. From 1991 through 1994, Psoroptes spp. infestations were found on 12 (44%) of 27 bighorn sheep. No mites were found on mule deer or cattle. The BTV serum antibody prevalence in a cohort of 26 cattle ranged from 17 to 89%. There was no evidence of exposure to BTV in the bighorn sheep o

What's eating you? chiggers.

Belonging to the Trombiculidae family of mites, chigger specifically refers to the larval stage of the mite's life cycle when it is able to bite its host. Although humans act as an accidental host, chiggers will latch on to the skin and their feeding process leads to localized inflammation and irritation. In most cases, these pruritic erythematous papules and papulovesicles are self-healing within a couple weeks, so only symptomatic relief is required as necessary by means of topical antipruritics, oral antihistamines, topical corticosteroids, or an intralesional triamcinolone acetonide inject

Scalp demodicidosis mimicking favus in a 6-year-old boy.

Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are obligatory ectoparasites of the pilosebaceous unit in humans. Although most people are infested with these mites, only a small number develop clinical symptoms of demodicidosis. We report a case of demodicidosis in a 6-year-old boy who had lesions on the scalp, forehead, neck, and anterior chest for 18 months. Our clinical diagnosis at the time was favus. The microscopic examination of the hair in a 10% potassium hydroxide preparation showed no fungal spores or hyphae, but many eggs and adult mites of D folliculorum. The patient was treated with oral

Scabies mimicking graft versus host disease in a hematopoietic cell transplant recipient.

Scabies is a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the mite, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Complex responses to scabies mites in the innate, humoral, and cellular immune systems can cause skin inflammation and pruritus. Diagnosis can be challenging because scabies resembles other common skin conditions. We report the first Korean case of scabies in a hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipient, initially suspected of skin graft versus host disease (GVHD). A T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia patient underwent a sibling-matched allogeneic HCT and developed pruritus after cell engraftm

Complement inhibitors from scabies mites promote streptococcal growth--a novel mechanism in infected epidermis?

BACKGROUND: Scabies is highly prevalent in socially disadvantaged communities such as indigenous populations and in developing countries. Generalized itching causes discomfort to the patient; however, serious complications can occur as a result of secondary bacterial pyoderma, commonly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) or Staphylococcus aureus. In the tropics, skin damage due to scabies mite infestations has been postulated to be an important link in the pathogenesis of disease associated with acute rheumatic fever and heart disease, poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis and systemic sepsi…

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor in Psoroptes ovis: Molecular Characterization and Potential Role in Eosinophil Accumulation of Skin in Rabbit and Its Implication in the Host-Parasite Interaction.

Psoroptes ovis, a common surface-living mite of domestic and wild animals worldwide, results in huge economic losses and serious welfare issues in the animal industry. P. ovis infestation rapidly causes massive eosinophil infiltration in skin lesions, and increasing research revealed that eosinophils might play an important role in the pathogenesis of P. ovis infestation. Intradermal injection of P. ovis antigen invoked massive eosinophil infiltration, suggesting that this mite should contain some relative molecules involved in eosinophil accumulation in the skin. However, these active molecul

Factors associated with diversity, quantity and zoonotic potential of ectoparasites on urban mice and voles.

Wild rodents are important hosts for tick larvae but co-infestations with other mites and insects are largely neglected. Small rodents were trapped at four study sites in Berlin, Germany, to quantify their ectoparasite diversity. Host-specific, spatial and temporal occurrence of ectoparasites was determined to assess their influence on direct and indirect zoonotic risk due to mice and voles in an urban agglomeration. Rodent-associated arthropods were diverse, including 63 species observed on six host species with an overall prevalence of 99%. The tick Ixodes ricinus was the most prevalent spec

Susceptible and infectious states for both vector and host in a dynamic pathogen-vector-host system.

Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a resurgent insect pathogen of honeybees that is efficiently transmitted by vectors and through host social contact. Continual transmission of DWV between hosts and vectors is required to maintain the pathogen within the population, and this vector-host-pathogen system offers unique disease transmission dynamics for pathogen maintenance between vectors and a social host. In a series of experiments, we measured vector-vector, host-host and host-vector transmission routes and show how these maintain DWV in honeybee populations. We found co-infestations on shared host

Scabies: important clinical consequences explained by new molecular studies.

In 2004, we reviewed the status of disease caused by the scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei at the time and pointed out that very little basic research had ever been done. The reason for this was largely the lack of availability of mites for experimental purposes and, to a degree, a consequent lack of understanding of its importance, resulting in the trivial name 'itch mite'. Scabies is responsible for major morbidity in disadvantaged communities and immunocompromised patients worldwide. In addition to the physical discomfort caused by the disease, scabies infestations facilitate infection by bact

Potential drivers of Megninia ginglymura (Mégnin) distribution in poultry hens: rearing-system and oviposition microhabitat factors across humid and semi-arid regions.

Megninia ginglymura (Mégnin, 1877) (Acariformes: Analgoidea: Analgidae) is a common feather mite of laying hens and a potential contributor to plumage damage and reduced productivity, yet its population dynamics and microhabitat use remain insufficiently characterized under modern commercial conditions. We conducted a year-long assessment of M. ginglymura abundance and intra-host distribution across three major production systems (Automated, Californian (two localities), and Cage-free), situated along a tropical-semi-arid gradient in a major poultry-producing region Pernambuco, Brazil. Cockroach allergy in a group of Turkish children with respiratory allergies.

Exposure to cockroach may lead to exacerbations of bronchial asthma and/or allergic rhinitis in sensitized patients. Although there is a widespread belief that cockroach allergy is a common problem in patients with respiratory allergies, little is known in Turkish children. In order to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of cockroach allergy in respiratory allergic children, we performed a study in newly referred children with respiratory allergies. All patients underwent questionnaire-interview and skin prick tested with common inhalant allergens in addition to two cockroach allerg

Demodex Folliculorum Causing Necrotizing Fasciitis in a Patient of Autoimmune Myelofibrosis and Type 2 Diabetes: A Rare Case Report.

Demodicosis is a skin disease caused by the Demodex mite. It commonly involves areas in or near pilosebaceous units. Infestation with Demodex is asymptomatic but may have a pathogenic role in immunocompromised individuals or when present in high densities. We hereby report a case of a 36-year-old fruit seller, a known case of diabetes, rheumatic heart disease, and autoimmune myelofibrosis, who presented with progressive right periorbital swelling with blackish discoloration, purulent discharge, and fever. Incision and debridement were performed repeatedly, and tissue was sent for microbiology,

Dermatitis outbreak associated with Pyemotes herfsi mites among animal shelter workers and volunteers in Wisconsin, a case study from September 2023.

During September 2023, five animal shelter workers reported developing dermatitis after contact with dry pet food bags donated by a pet store. We investigated to determine outbreak source and mitigate further spread. A case was defined as the onset of pruritus within 12 hours of contact with pet food bags or surfaces contaminated by them, occurring between September 1 and 8, 2023, in any setting. We interviewed persons presenting pruritis and requested photographs of their lesions, which a dermatologist reviewed. In total, seven cases were identified, including five among shelter workers and t
