Virginia Henderson's principles and practice of nursing applied to organ donation after brain death.

Registered nurses were some of the first nonphysician organ transplant and donation specialists in the field, both in procurement and clinical arenas. Nursing theories are abundant in the literature and in nursing curricula, but none have been applied to the donation process. Noted nursing theorist Virginia Henderson (1897-1996), often referred to as the "first lady of nursing," developed a nursing model based on activities of living. Henderson had the pioneering view that nursing stands separately from medicine and that nursing consists of more than simply following physicians' orders. Hender

The efficacy of whole-course nursing on malignant bone and soft tumors of lower limbs: A randomized study.

Patients with malignant bone and soft tissue tumors of the lower limbs frequently encounter substantial postoperative pain, delayed functional recovery, and adverse psychological reactions. Conventional nursing care may not adequately address these complex needs during the perioperative period. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a comprehensive whole-course nursing model - encompassing preoperative education, perioperative care, postoperative rehabilitation, and psychological support - in enhancing clinical outcomes for patients undergoing limb salvage surgery. In this randomized contr

Enhancing the Professional Work Environment Through Nursing Engagement in an Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making and professional governance have long been defining features of American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet-designated organizations, supporting high-quality outcomes, professional autonomy, and nurse engagement. Skin protection in nursing work: promoting the use of gloves and hand alcohol.

Nursing has been identified as a wet-work occupation, with a high prevalence of occupational irritant contact dermatitis. Reduction of exposure to skin irritants contributes to the prevention of occupational skin disease in nurses. The role of the use of soap and water, hand alcohol and gloves in prevention programmes is discussed. 2 additional measures for reducing exposure to skin irritants are postulated: use of hand alcohol instead of soap and water in disinfection procedures when the hands are not visibly dirty; use of gloves in wet activities such as patient washing to prevent the hands

Supportive Resources, Work Engagement, and Contextual Performance Among Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Mediation Study.

Background: Nurses' contextual performance, defined as voluntary, extra-role behaviors that support colleagues, teams, and the organization, is critical to patient safety and care quality. Although individual, work, and interpersonal resources have each been linked to nurse outcomes, the pathways through which these resources are associated with contextual performance remain insufficiently examined in the nursing workforce. This study examined the relationships between individual, work, and interpersonal resources; work engagement; and contextual performance among nurses. Methods: A cross-sect

Effects of Nursing Home Closures on Occupancy and Finances of Nearby Nursing Homes.

This study estimates the effect of nursing home closure on occupancy, net profit margin, and operating margin of nearby nursing homes. We use national nursing home data from 2009 to 2019 from Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider of Services (POS), and LTCfocus.org data. Using the Callaway and Sant'Anna difference-in-differences model, we compare the changes in occupancy, net profit margin, and operating margin between incumbent nursing homes in markets with any closure and nursing homes in markets without a closure, overall, and across rurality. Our findings suggest that nursing home closu

Meaning in life and life event profiles among Chinese nursing students: A cross-sectional latent profile and mediation study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students frequently experience stressful life events, yet meaning in life has received less attention in this population than negative outcomes such as depression and anxiety. It remains unclear whether profiles of stressful life events are associated with meaning in life through resilience and whether these profiles provide additional information beyond cumulative stress burden. AIM: This study aims to identify profiles of stressful life events among nursing students, compare resilience and meaning in life across profiles, examine whether resilience mediates the associati

Lactational transfer of tetrachloroethylene in rats.

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is a commonly used organic solvent and a suspected human carcinogen, reportedly transferred to human breast milk following inhalation exposure. Transfer of PCE to milk may represent a threat to the nursing infant. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was developed to quantitatively assess the transfer of inhaled PCE into breast milk and the consequent exposure of the nursing infant. The model was validated in lactating rats. Lactating Sprague-Dawley female rats were exposed via inhalation to PCE at concentrations ranging from 20-1000 ppm, and then retu
