Computer assisted identification of stress, anxiety, depression (SAD) in students: A state-of-the-art review.

Stress, depression, and anxiety are a person's physiological states that emerge from various body features such as speech, body language, eye contact, facial expression, etc. Physiological emotion is a part of human life and is associated with psychological activities. Sad emotion is relatable to negative thoughts and recognized in three stages containing stress, anxiety, and depression. These stages of Physiological emotion show various common and distinguished symptoms. The present study explores stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms in student life. The study reviews the psychological fe

Psychological factors and DNA methylation of genes related to immune/inflammatory system markers: the VA Normative Aging Study.

OBJECTIVES: Although psychological factors have been associated with chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD), the underlying pathways for these associations have yet to be elucidated. DNA methylation has been posited as a mechanism linking psychological factors to CHD risk. In a cohort of community-dwelling elderly men, we explored the associations between positive and negative psychological factors with DNA methylation in promoter regions of multiple genes involved in immune/inflammatory processes related to atherosclerosis. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Greater B

Biopsychosocial influence on exercise-induced injury: genetic and psychological combinations are predictive of shoulder pain phenotypes.

UNLABELLED: Chronic pain is influenced by biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors. The current study investigated potential roles for combinations of genetic and psychological factors in the development and/or maintenance of chronic musculoskeletal pain. An exercise-induced shoulder injury model was used, and a priori selected genetic (ADRB2, COMT, OPRM1, AVPR1 A, GCH1, and KCNS1) and psychological (anxiety, depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, fear of pain, and kinesiophobia) factors were included as predictors. Pain phenotypes were shoulder pain intensity (5-day average

Exploring early and late pregnancy heart rate variability as incremental predictors of postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms.

Early identification of postpartum depression and anxiety is critical for enabling timely preventive interventions. Although antenatal self-report measures are strong and widely used predictors of postpartum mental health outcomes, it remains unclear whether physiological markers such as heart rate variability (HRV) provide incremental predictive value beyond established psychological assessments, particularly when measured at different stages of pregnancy. This study investigated whether HRV indices, measured during early and late pregnancy, before and after a mild cognitive-emotional stresso

Negative abortion experiences: predictors and development of post-abortion psychological and relational adjustment scale.

Associations between several personal and contextual predic-tors of negative post-abortion mental health outcomes were explored using a large national sample of U.S. women who sought out post-abortion care from a crisis pregnancy center. The predictors examined included decisional regret, pregnancy wantedness, various forms of pressure, understanding of the procedure, and satisfaction with counseling provided by the abortion facility. Well-established measures of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse in addition to a newly developed assessment of abortion-related out-comes, the Post-Abortio

Psychological Distress, Caregiver Burden and Quality of Life Among Informal Carers of First Nations Australians Diagnosed With Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

IntroductionInformal carers provide essential support for people diagnosed with cancer, however, the demands of caregiving can negatively impact their psychological wellbeing. There is a need to examine psychological wellbeing among carers of First Nations cancer patients to understand the impacts of caregiving within cultural contexts. Therefore, this study aims to quantify carer psychological distress, burden, and quality of life (QoL) among carers of First Nations Australian cancer patients - key indicators of carer wellbeing that may have implications for both carers and patients.MethodsTh

The role of oral contraceptive use in associations of concussion history with kynurenine pathway metabolites, inflammation, and psychological symptoms in female athletes.

Concussion history is linked to increased risk of psychological symptoms, potentially through inflammation-driven activation of the kynurenine pathway (KP). Use of oral contraceptives (OC) is also associated with increased inflammation, reduced protective kynurenic acid (KynA), and, in some cases, increased psychological symptoms. Despite this evidence and the fact that around half of all female collegiate athletes use OCs, existing research in this area does not account for OC use among female athletes. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that OC use moderates the association of number of

Clinical Perfectionism in Anorexia Nervosa: Associations with Eating Disorders' Specific Symptomatology and General Psychological Symptoms in Italian Young Adult Women.

Background/Objectives: Existing literature has consistently identified perfectionism as a core feature of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, much of the research has focused primarily on its association with eating disorder-related symptoms. At the same time, less attention has been paid to understanding how perfectionism affects the overall psychological functioning of individuals with eating disorders, and in particular AN. The present study aimed at investigating the association between perfectionism and both eating disorder-specific symptomatology and general psychological symptoms in a sampl

Relationship between mobile phone use and multidimensional frailty: evidence from UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the longitudinal temporal relationships between weekly mobile phone call time and four dimensions of frailty. METHODS: Data were derived from three instances (T1, T2, T3) of the UK Biobank. Frailty encompassed four dimensions: psychological, physical, social, and cognitive. Separate Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPM) were constructed for each frailty dimension with weekly mobile phone call time, measured by self-reported weekly mobile phone call time standardized to baseline. Chi-square difference tests and the BIC were adopted for model comparisons

Conceptual framework for tinnitus: a cognitive model in practice.

Tinnitus is a conscious attended awareness perception of sourceless sound. Widespread theoretical and evidence-based neurofunctional and psychological models have tried to explain tinnitus-related distress considering the influence of psychological and cognitive factors. However, tinnitus models seem to be less focused on causality, thereby easily misleading interpretations. Also, they may be incapable of individualization. This study proposes a Conceptual Cognitive Framework (CCF) providing insight into cognitive mechanisms involved in the predisposition, precipitation, and perpetuation of ti

Associations of C-reactive protein and psychological distress are modified by antidepressants, supporting an inflammatory depression subtype: Findings from UKHLS.

BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence increasingly suggests inflammation may be important specifically for an etiologically distinct depression subtype, characterised by resistance to antidepressant medication. However, epidemiological investigations of the relationship of inflammation with depression and psychological distress have failed to acknowledge these developments, which may have resulted in bias or masking of associations driven by the subtype. This may have contributed to inconsistent results in epidemiological studies, and equivocal support for an inflammation-depression link. METHODS: An

Hierarchical temporal processing deficit model of reality distortion and psychoses.

We posit in this article that hierarchical temporal processing deficit is the underlying basis of reality distortion and psychoses. Schizophrenia is a prototypical reality distortion disorder in which the patient manifests with auditory hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech and thinking, cognitive impairment, avolition and social and occupational dysfunction. Reality distortion can be present in many other disorders including bipolar disorder, major depression and even dementia. Conceptually, schizophrenia is a heterogeneous entity likely to be because of numerous causes similar to de

From recognition to decisions: extending and testing recognition-based models for multialternative inference.

The recognition heuristic is a noncompensatory strategy for inferring which of two alternatives, one recognized and the other not, scores higher on a criterion. According to it, such inferences are based solely on recognition. We generalize this heuristic to tasks with multiple alternatives, proposing a model of how people identify the consideration sets from which they make their final decisions. In doing so, we address concerns about the heuristic's adequacy as a model of behavior: Past experiments have led several authors to conclude that there is no evidence for a noncompensatory use of re

Field research on the relationship between stress and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.

We review empirical evidence from two field studies for the role of stressful life events in disease flare-ups among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA patients were expected to be more vulnerable psychologically, and physiologically, to stressful events in their everyday lives than other arthritis patients without an autoimmune disease. Findings from two studies are reviewed both for their substantive contribution, but also to provide guidance on measurement issues in future field research of this kind. One study included 41 patients with RA, who were interviewed weekly and called to

Chronic Stress and Stroke Among the Adult Population in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association of chronic psychological distress and stroke among a large sample of the adult population in the United States. METHODOLOGY: We utilized data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) spanning 10 years (2004-2013). Stroke history was self-reported, as were other stroke risk factors. Psychological distress was measured using the Six-Item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (a score of ≥13 indicated distress). We used a logistic regression model to examine the strength of the association between psychological distress and stroke. We

The No-U-Turn sampler and its mixture-modeling revision for the 4-parameter normal ogive model.

INTRODUCTION: The No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS), widely applied in psychometrics via the Stan platform, lacks algorithm-level systematic introduction for item response theory (IRT) models and tailored optimizations for specific models. This study systematically explicates the NUTS algorithm for the 4-parameter normal ogive (4PNO) model and proposes a Mixture-Modeling NUT sampler (MMNUTS) to enhance its estimation. METHODS: A simulation study that considers both educational and psychological scenarios with an empirical example from a behavioral scale was designed to examine the feasibility of the p

Maintenance of Social Anxiety in Stuttering: A Cognitive-Behavioral Model.

PURPOSE: Stuttering is a speech disorder frequently accompanied by anxiety in social-evaluative situations. A growing body of research has confirmed a significant rate of social anxiety disorder among adults who stutter. Social anxiety disorder is a chronic and disabling anxiety disorder associated with substantial life impairment. Several influential models have described cognitive-behavioral factors that contribute to the maintenance of social anxiety in nonstuttering populations. The purpose of the present article is to apply these leading models to the experience of social anxiety for peop

Episodic repetitive thought: dimensions, correlates, and consequences.

Repetitive thought (RT) - attentive, prolonged, or frequent thought about oneself and one's world - plays an important role in many models of psychological and physical ill health (e.g., rumination and worry), as well as models of recovery and well-being (e.g., processing and reminiscing). In these models, repetitive thought is typically treated as stable or trait-like. In contrast, episodic RT reflects what people have "on their minds" at a particular point in time. In four studies, young women (N=94), college students (N=166), first-year law students (N=73), and older adults (N=174) describe
