Prediction of interstitial glucose level.

Glucose is an important source of energy for cells. In clinical practice, we measure glucose level in blood and interstitial fluid. Each method has its pros and cons, and both levels correlate with each other. As the body tries to maintain the glucose level within a particular range to avoid adverse effects, it is desirable to predict future glucose levels in order to aid provided health care. We can see this desire in research, e.g., research on glucose transporters of cells. As yet another example, we can see it with diabetic patients, patients in a metabolic intensive care unit, particularl

Solving the freeloaders paradox: Genetic associations and frequency-dependent selection in the evolution of cooperation among nonrelatives.

One of the enduring problems in the study of social evolution has been to understand how cooperation can be maintained in the presence of freeloaders, individuals that take advantage of the more cooperative members of groups they are eager to join. The freeloader problem has been particularly troublesome when groups consist of nonrelatives, and no inclusive fitness benefits accrue to individuals that contribute more heavily to communal activities. These theoretical difficulties, however, are not mirrored by the numerous examples of cooperative or even altruistic behaviors exhibited by groups o

Estimating within-locus nonadditive coefficient and discriminating dominance versus overdominance as the genetic cause of heterosis.

Testing (over)dominance as the genetic cause of heterosis and estimating the (over)dominance coefficient (h) are related. Using simulations, we investigate the statistical properties of Mukai's approach, which is intended to estimate the average (h) of hi across loci by regression of outcrossed progeny on the sum of the two corresponding homozygous parents. A new approach for estimating h is also developed, utilizing data on families formed by multiple selfed genotypes from each outcrossed parent, thus not requiring constructing homozygotes. Assuming constant mutation effects, h can be estimat

Evaluation and testing of the proportional hazards assumption in analysis of time-to-event data in subgroup analysis of randomised controlled trials: a meta-epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: When Cox regression models are used to analyse time-to-event data, the proportional hazard assumption (PHA) must be reassured to obtain valid results. Transparent reporting of the statistics used is therefore essential to interpret research. This study aimed to assess the quality of statistical reporting and testing of the PHA in subgroup analysis of surgical randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: All published articles (see appendix 1) in the top quartile (25%) of surgical journals from 2019 to 2021 were screened in a literature review according to the ClarivateTM journal

Sandwich Variance Estimation in Scale Mixture of Skew-Normal Linear Mixed Models.

Linear mixed models are often used to analyze studies with repeated measurements over time, where the data present a correlation between observations of the same individual. However, one of the main challenges in using these models is correctly defining the covariance structure associated with error and random effects. To overcome this challenge, we obtain the sandwich variance estimator as a robust alternative to estimate the standard error in the scale mixture of skew-normal linear mixed models (SMSN-LMMs). By definition, SMSN-LMMs can accommodate skewness and heavy tails, and by considering

Prognostic models for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma after resection: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically characterize existing prognostic models and to evaluate and compare their discriminative performance in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) after curative resection. METHODS: We systematically searched Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and MEDLINE (January 2010 to January 2026). Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using PROBAST+AI. Tested and selected variables were summarized using frequencies. Discriminative performance estimates (C-index and area under the curve [AUC]) with 95%

A beta way: A tutorial on Bayesian beta regression for psychological research.

Rates, percentages, and proportions are common outcomes in psychology and the social sciences. These outcomes are often analyzed using models that assume normality, but this practice overlooks important features of the data, such as their natural bounds at 0 and 1. As a result, estimates can become distorted. In contrast, treating such outcomes as beta-distributed respects these limits and can yield more accurate estimates. Despite these advantages, the use of beta models in applied research remains limited. Our goal is to provide researchers with practical guidance for adopting beta regressio

The evolution of sampling in epidemiology: from classical probability models to AI-enhanced recruitment and active learning.

Sampling is a foundational element of epidemiological research because it determines the validity, efficiency, and generalizability of population-based inferences. Classical probability and non-probability sampling methods have long underpinned public health study design by providing robust frameworks for unbiased estimation and causal inference. However, the rapid expansion of digital health data, electronic health records, and large-scale online cohorts has exposed important limitations in these largely static sampling frameworks. This narrative review traces the evolution of sampling in epi

Regional (in)Consistency and Comparability of Cannabis Laboratory Testing: A Statistical Exploration of Total Yeast and Mold.

PURPOSE: Independent laboratory testing of cultivated cannabis is essential for ensuring product quality and protecting consumer health. While individual US states have collected extensive laboratory testing data from their medical and adult-use cannabis markets, a comprehensive, cross-state analysis remains lacking. To address this gap, we apply a design science research methodology to develop a structured framework for analyzing and comparing cannabis laboratory testing practices across decentralized regulatory environments. METHODS: With data obtained through Freedom of Information Act req

Estimates of global burden of snakebite: A literature review and geostatistical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Snake envenoming (SE) remains an important public health problem, disproportionately affecting impoverished rural communities in tropical and subtropical regions. Although previous attempts have been made to quantify the global burden of SE, accurate, up-to-date data remain scarce. Here we present a comprehensive re-evaluation of the global burden of snakebite, 17 years after our initial estimate. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A new literature review was conducted on snakebites, SE and mortality published in any language, up to March 31, 2025, to update the knowledge accumulated since our

A flexible class of latent variable models for the analysis of antibody response data.

Existing approaches to modelling antibody concentration data are mostly based on finite mixture models that rely on the assumption that individuals can be divided into 2 distinct groups: seronegative and seropositive. Here, we challenge this dichotomous modelling assumption and propose a latent variable modelling framework in which the immune status of each individual is represented along a continuum of latent seroreactivity, ranging from minimal to strong immune activation. This formulation provides greater flexibility in capturing age-related changes in antibody distributions while preservin

Deriving an Analytical Solution to Inversion of Royston/Parmar Restricted Cubic Spline Parametric Survival Models for Discrete Event Simulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Discrete event simulation models simulate times to events rather than using the cumulative survival probabilities provided by parametric survival models. This requires inversion of the survival functions to produce analytical solutions to derive these event times from given survival estimates. While numerical methods can approximate event times for more complex survival models, this process may be computationally expensive, especially when repeated over large numbers of simulations. We aimed to derive an analytical solution to inverse functions for Royston/Parmar rest

Letter to the Editor: Complementary statistical approaches for interpreting machine learning feature importance in osteoporosis risk.

This paper comments on the valuable contribution by Carvalho and Gavaia regarding machine learning for osteoporosis risk prediction, particularly their use of a stacking ensemble model and feature importance analysis. While acknowledging the model's high predictive accuracy, we raise a crucial concern: high accuracy does not inherently validate the reliability of feature importance interpretation. We discuss how the interpretation of feature importance from complex, model-dependent methods like those used can be influenced by model structure and data characteristics, potentially overemphasizin

Group-based trajectory modeling to describe the geographical distribution of tuberculosis notifications.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem, and understanding the geographic distribution of the disease is critical in planning and evaluating intervention strategies. This manuscript illustrates the application of Group-Based Trajectory Modeling (GBTM), a statistical method that analyzes the evolution of an outcome over time to identify groups with similar trajectories. Specifically, we apply GBTM to identify the evolution of the number of TB notifications over time across various geographic locations, aiming to identify groups of locations with similar trajectories. Prediction models for identifying medication overuse or medication overuse headache in migraine patients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder that presents significant management challenges, resulting in underdiagnosis and inappropriate treatments, leaving patients at risk of medication overuse (MO). MO contributes to disease progression and the development of medication overuse headache (MOH). Predicting which migraine patients are at risk of MO/MOH is crucial for effective management. Thus, this systematic review aims to review and critique available prediction models for MO/MOH in migraine patients. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using Embase, Scopus, Medli

Comparison of polynomial and rational function cornea models for effective dimensionality reduction.

This study aims to examine geometric models of the corneal surface that can be used to reduce in reasonable time the dimensionality of datasets of normal anterior corneas. Polynomial models (P) like Zernike polynomials (ZP) and spherical harmonic polynomials (SHP) were obvious candidates along with their rational function (R) counterparts, namely Zernike rational functions (ZR) and spherical harmonic rational functions (SHR, new model). Knowing that both SHP and ZR were more accurate than ZP for the modeling of normal and keratoconus corneas, it was expected that both spherical harmonic (SH) m

Non-Mixture Cure Model Estimation in Bladder Cancer Patients: A Novel Approach with Exponentiated Weibull Exponential Distribution.

OBJECTIVE: Cure models are frequently used in survival analysis to account for a cured fraction in the data. When there is a cure rate present, researchers often prefer cure models over parametric models to analyse the survival data. These models enable the ability to define the probability distribution of survival durations for patients who are at risk. Various distributions can be considered for the survival times, such as Exponentiated Weibull Exponential (EWE), Exponential Exponential (EE), Weibull and lognormal distribution. The objective of this research is to choose the most appropriate

Associations between Dengue Incidence, Ecological Factors, and Anthropogenic Factors in Singapore.

Singapore experiences endemic dengue. Vector control remains the primary means to reduce transmission due to the lack of available therapeutics. Resource limitations mean that vector-control tools need to be optimized, which can be achieved by studying risk factors related to disease transmission. We developed a statistical modelling framework which can account for a high-resolution and high-dimensional set of covariates to delineate spatio-temporal characteristics that are associated with dengue transmission from 2014 to 2020 in Singapore. We applied the proposed framework to two distinct dat

Addressing positivity violations in causal effect estimation using Gaussian process priors.

In observational studies, causal inference relies on several key identifying assumptions. One identifiability condition is the positivity assumption, which requires the probability of treatment be bounded away from 0 and 1. That is, for every covariate combination, it should be possible to observe both treated and control subjects the covariate distributions should overlap between treatment arms. If the positivity assumption is violated, population-level causal inference necessarily involves some extrapolation. Ideally, a greater amount of uncertainty about the causal effect estimate should be
