Space motion sickness medications: interference with biomedical parameters.

The possibility that drugs administered to Skylab 3 (SL-3) and 4 (SL-4) crewmen for space motion sickness may have interfered with their biomedical evaluation in space was investigated. Healthy volunteers received combinations of Scopolamine/Dexedrine for four days in regimens similar to those used in these missions. Urine samples, heart rate, body temperature, mood and performance were analyzed for drug-related changes. Twenty-four hour urine samples were analyzed by the same procedures as those used to analyze the flight samples. Hormone concentrations determined included cortisol, epinephri…

Improvement in left ventricular wall motion following nitroglycerin.

Coronary artery disease patients frequently have left ventricular wall motion abnormalities. Though nitroglycerin is commonly used in ischemic heart disease, its effects on wall motion abnormalities is unknown. In this study we have evaluated the effects of nitroglycerin on wall motion abnormalities and on ejection fraction in 25 patients. Sixteen had coronary artery disease (greater than 70% luminal narrowing). Six had no evidence of heart disease and three had congestive cardiomyopathies with normal coronary arteries. Left ventricular angiography was performed prior to and six minutes after …

Stability and breakdown of chiral motion in nonreciprocal flocking.

We study a two-species Vicsek model with intraspecies alignment and asymmetric interspecies couplings, where one species aligns with the other while the latter antialigns. Motivated by recent results showing that globally coherent chiral motion is not a generic large-scale state of finite-range nonreciprocal flocking, we ask whether a chiral state can nevertheless be stabilized in the discrete-time, metric, nonreciprocal two-species Vicsek model, and if so, under what conditions. For equal populations and motilities, we find that the global chiral state is a long-lived finite-time state rather…

Effects of object motion on visual acuity in honeybees.

Object motion is a fundamental visual cue for many animals, yet its role in modulating visual perception is not fully understood. The majority of previous studies have used stationary stimuli to investigate the visual acuity of insects such as honeybees. Here, we used a behavioural assay to investigate whether object motion influences the known bounds of bees' visual acuity. Using a Y-maze, we conducted binary choice experiments where honeybees (Apis mellifera) were trained to a stimulus and then tested with pairs of stimuli varying in shape (disc versus diamond), size and motion (stationary v…

A modular neural circuit for computing the motion of objects.

Computing the direction of a moving object requires integrating motion signals from its component edges into coherent patterns. The representation of pattern motion in visual cortex has been extensively studied, yet its underlying neural circuitry remains unknown. Using high-density recordings in macaque area MT, we show that selectivity to pattern motion emerges from a functionally and anatomically distinct cortical circuit. We demonstrate that neurons specialized for encoding component and pattern motion comprise distinct cell types arranged in a hierarchical circuit in which pattern neurons…

Brain motion is driven by mechanical coupling with the abdomen.

The brain moves within the skull, but the drivers and consequences of this motion are not well understood. Here we visualized motion of the dorsal cortex relative to the skull in awake head-fixed mice using high-speed, multiplane two-photon microscopy. Brain motion was directed primarily rostrally and laterally, and was correlated tightly with locomotion, but not with respiration or the cardiac cycle. Specifically, brain motion was driven by abdominal muscle contractions that activate a hydraulic-like vascular connection between the nervous system and the abdominal cavity, and could similarly …

Graph dictionary learning for the study of human motion.

In this article, we introduce a method inspired by Graph Signal Processing (GSP) for the analysis of human motion based on the 3D positions of skeletal joints. Our approach uses a graph dictionary learning technique, in which each velocity sample is decomposed into a linear combination of a limited set of atoms acquired directly from the data. The efficacy of this methodology is evaluated using a dataset focused on upper limb elevations. We present features and visualizations, and validate the robustness of the approach through the construction of inter-and intra-subject distances. The feature…

Range of motion required for Auslan: a biomechanical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Auslan is used by the Australian deaf community and relies heavily on hand, wrist, and elbow movement. Upper limb injury or dysfunction may require surgical intervention to alleviate pain and provide a stable skeleton for function, leading to partial or complete reduction in motion. The aim of this study was to assess the wrist, forearm, and elbow motion required to communicate via Auslan, to tailor optimal interventions in this population. METHODS: A biomechanical analysis was conducted on two native Auslan communicators, who signed 28 pre-selected and common Auslan words and phr…

Experimental validation of a new model for mandibular motions.

Long-term excessive forces loading from muscles of mastication during mandibular motions may result in disorders of temporomandibular joint (TMJ), myofascial pain, and restriction of jaw opening and closing. Current analysis of mandibular movements is generally conducted with a single opening, protrusive and lateral movements rather than composite motions that the three can be combined arbitrarily. The objective of this study was to construct theoretical equations reflecting the correlation between composite motions and muscle forces, and consequently to analyze the mandibular composite motion…

Development of BOLD Response to Motion in Human Infants.

Behavioral studies suggest that motion perception is rudimentary at birth and matures steadily over the first few years. We demonstrated previously that the major cortical associative areas serving motion processing, like middle temporal complex (MT+), visual cortex area 6 (V6), and PIVC in adults, show selective responses to coherent flow in 8-week-old infants. Here, we study the BOLD response to the same motion stimuli in 5-week-old infants (four females and four males) and compare the maturation between these two ages. The results show that MT+ and PIVC areas show a similar motion response …

The influence of auditory rhythms on the speed of inferred motion.

The present research explored the influence of isochronous auditory rhythms on the timing of movement-related prediction in two experiments. … results indicate that exposure to fast isochronous auditory rhythms during an interval of inferred motion can influence the imagined rate of such motion and suggest a possible role of an internal rhythmicity in the maintenance of temporally accurate dynamic mental representations.

Ependymal ciliary motion and their role in congenital hydrocephalus.

PURPOSE: Since a case of hydrocephalus in humans considered to be caused by ciliary dysfunction was first reported by Greenstone et al. in 1984, numerous papers on the correlation between ciliary function and hydrocephalus have been published. METHODS: We reviewed the published literature on primary ciliary dyskinesia in humans causing hydrocephalus, focusing on articles specifically examining the relation between ciliary function and hydrocephalus and its treatment. In addition, the authors' experience is briefly discussed. RESULTS: Full texts of 16 articles reporting cases of human hydroce

The Pattern of Tongue's Motion: A Free-Exploration Study.

The human tongue is involved in many essential daily activities and is comprised of eight muscles. To date tools for quantifications of the tongue's intrinsic motions are limited. In this study we explored the tongue's motion during a free-exploration paradigm, using a discreet wireless intra-oral wearable device. Six healthy subjects were instructed to freely move the tip of their tongue on the wearable device while attempting to cover the entire surface of the hard palate. The goal of this study is to compose a two-dimensional probability distribution model of the tongue's motion. We conclud…

Motional Dynamical Decoupling for Interferometry with Macroscopic Particles.

We extend the concept of dynamical decoupling from spin to mechanical degrees of freedom of macroscopic objects, for application in interferometry. In this manner, the superposition of matter waves can be made resilient to many important sources of noise when these are driven along suitable paths in space. As a concrete implementation, we present the case of levitated (or free falling) nanodiamonds hosting a color center in a magnetic field gradient. We point out that these interferometers are inherently affected by diamagnetic forces, which restrict the separation of the superposed states to
