Noncraniofacial manifestations of Crouzon's disease.

Although most interest centers on the craniofacial region in Crouzon's disease, noncraniofacial manifestations are important because they may complicate both diagnosis and management. A population of 59 patients with Crouzon's disease was reviewed to determine the frequency of these deformities. Stylohyoid ligament calcification (50%) and cervical spine (40%) and elbow (18%) abnormalities were the most common. Minor hand deformities (10%), other musculoskeletal deformities (7%), and visceral anomalies (7%) were also seen. Acanthosis nigricans was not present in this population. Recommendations

Automatic Analysis of Transverse Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Images Based on the Multi-Task Learning Model.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging is an important basis for the early screening and accurate treatment of muscle disorders. It allows the observation of muscle status to screen for underlying neuromuscular diseases including myasthenia gravis, myotonic dystrophy, and ankylosing muscular dystrophy. Due to the complexity of skeletal muscle ultrasound image noise, it is a tedious and time-consuming process to analyze. Therefore, we proposed a multi-task learning-based approach to automatically segment and initially diagnose transverse musculoskeletal ultrasound images. The method implements musc

Bilateral magnetic resonance imaging findings in individuals with unilateral shoulder pain.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used to diagnose structural abnormalities in the shoulder. However, subsequent findings may not be the source of symptoms. The aim of this study was to determine comparative MRI findings across both shoulders of individuals with unilateral shoulder symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 123 individuals from the community who had self-reported unilateral shoulder pain with no signs of adhesive capsulitis, no substantial range-of-motion deficit, no history of upper-limb fractures, no repeated shoulder dislocations, an

Flares of Disease in Children with Clinically Inactive Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Were Not Correlated with Ultrasound Findings.

OBJECTIVE: The validity of our current definitions for clinically inactive disease (CID) in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) based on physical examination is challenged by the development of advanced musculoskeletal imaging tools. We aimed to prospectively determine the prevalence of abnormal ultrasound (US) findings in children with CID in JIA and their clinical significance. METHODS: Children aged ≥ 4 years with CID and a history of arthritis from a single tertiary center were approached over 1 year. Standard US of knees, tibiotalar joints, subtalar joints, and wrists were performed at b

[MR Imaging Features of Pediatric Bone Marrow].

MRI plays a crucial role in bone marrow (BM) assessment, and has very high sensitivity in diagnosing marrow disorders. However, for radiologists who may not frequently encounter pediatric imaging, distinguishing pathologic BM lesion from normal BM can be challenging. Conditions involving the BM in pediatric patients, such as leukemia and metastatic neuroblastoma, often manifest with diverse musculoskeletal symptoms and may be diagnosed using musculoskeletal MRI examinations. Accurate interpretation of pediatric MRI requires not only an understanding of the normal composition of BM but also an

[Occult post-traumatic osteochondral changes in the knee. Assessment with magnetic resonance].

Occult posttraumatic osteochondral injuries of the knee are bone and/or cartilage abnormalities which cannot be detected on plain radiographs. This study was aimed at investigating MR capabilities in the detection and characterization of occult bone and/or cartilage injuries in symptomatic patients with previous musculoskeletal trauma of the knee. We retrospectively selected 60 patients (45 men and 15 women; mean age: 33.1 +/- 16.3 years; range: 12-70 years) from our patients submitted to MRI of the knee during a 3-year period. These patients had a history of previous acute musculoskeletal tra

Fontan Circulation Associated Organ Abnormalities Beyond the Heart, Lungs, Liver, and Gut: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with a Fontan circulation are at risk for sequelae of Fontan physiology during follow-up. Fontan physiology affects all organ systems and an overview of end-organ damage is needed. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of abnormalities in multiple organ systems for patients with a longstanding Fontan circulation. We searched online databases for articles describing abnormalities in multiple organ systems. Cardio-pulmonary abnormalities, protein losing enteropathy, and Fontan associated liver disease have already extensively been described and were excluded from this

[Neonatal cri-du-chat syndrome revelead by facial dysmorphism and weak suction: a case report].

Cri-du-chat syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, due to a deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5 (5p-). Its incidence is ranging from 1/15000 to 1/50000 live births. This was a one-day-old male newborn from a non-consanguineous marriage, the first pregnancy uncomplicated and carried to term with a birth weight of 2295g. Clinical examination revealed: craniofacial dysmorphism with hypertelorism and microcephaly, hypotonia, poor suction and clubfoot more marked on the right, the rest of the examination was unremarkable. During hospitalization, a high-pitched monochromatic cry mimicking a cat'

Loss of CSF-contacting neuron sensory function is associated with a hyper-kyphosis of the spine reminiscent of Scheuermann's disease.

Scheuermann's disease, also referred to as Scheuermann's kyphosis, is the second most frequent spine deformity occurring in humans after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), both with an unclear etiology. Recent genetic studies in zebrafish unraveled new mechanisms linked to AIS, highlighting the role of the Reissner fiber, an acellular polymer bathing in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in close proximity with ciliated cells and mechanosensory neurons lining the central canal of the spinal cord (CSF-cNs). However, while the Reissner fiber and ciliary beating have been linked to AIS-like phenot

An adult Chinese patient with developmental delay with short stature, dysmorphic features, and sparse hair (Loucks-Innes syndrome).

Variants of the diphthamide biosynthesis I (DPH1, OMIM*603527) are associated with developmental delay, short stature, and sparse hair syndrome (DEDSSH/DPH1 syndrome) (OMIM# 616901). Another name is Loucks-Innes syndrome. DPH1 syndrome is an ultrarare and severe neurodevelopmental disorder. Less than 20 patients were reported from different ethnicities. Here, we described the first Chinese adult with genetically confirmed DPH1 syndrome. We summarized previously reported patients in the literature and found that developmental delay, unusual skull shape, sparse hair, and facial dysmorphism were

Posterior instrumented fusion on lumbar stenosis syndrome can bring benefit to proximal degenerative kyphosis: A CONSORT-compliant article.

The effect on degenerative thoracolumbar kyphosis (DTLK) after short-segment instrument for lumbar spinal stenosis syndrome (LSS) remains controversial. Based on the biomechanics and compensatory of the global spino-pelvic alignment, it was assumed that the interference on the lumbar spine, instead of the thoracolumbar segment, could still make a difference on the proximal spine. To explore whether DTLK could improve with only surgery for LSS and identify influencing factors on postoperative TLK.The study was performed from January 2016 to December 2018. Sixty-nine participants (25 male) diagno

A Novel PGM3 Mutation Is Associated With a Severe Phenotype of Bone Marrow Failure, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, Skeletal Dysplasia, and Congenital Malformations.

Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs) affect multiple systems and present a broad spectrum of clinical features, often including skeletal dysplasia. Exome sequencing has led to the identification of new CDG genes. Immune and skeletal phenotypes associated with mutations in PGM3, encoding a protein that converts N-acetyl-glucosamine-6-phosphate into N-acetyl-glucosamine-1-phosphate, were recently reported. Through exome sequencing, we identified a novel homozygous mutation (c.1135T>C; p.Phe379Leu) in PGM3 in two siblings with bone marrow failure, severe combined immunodeficiency, renal a
