Guided Imagery and Music for Labor Pain, Anxiety, and Birth Experience: A Randomized Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Labor pain and childbirth-related anxiety are significant factors that influence women's physiological and psychological well-being during delivery. Nonpharmacological interventions such as guided imagery and music have been increasingly been used to support comfort and positive birth experiences. This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the effects of guided imagery combined with music on labor pain, anxiety, and birth experience among primiparous pregnant women. METHODS: A total of 123 primiparous women were randomly assigned to three groups: guided imagery with mus…

Music listening and young children's mood and behavior: The parents as home DJs study.

Using an experience sampling method (ESM), this study examined how parents incorporated music listening into daily routines and its perceived effects on children's mood and behavior. Parents (N = 562; 98% mothers; 79% White; 96% affiliated with an early childhood music program) of children aged 0-5 years completed a sign-up survey and a 7-day ESM protocol in 2021. Music listening was ubiquitous in family life, often used for entertainment and emotion regulation. In over 75% of episodes, parents reported noticeable-mostly positive-changes in their children. Mixed-effects models showed stronger …

Social interaction enhances the pleasurable urge to move to music in people with Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundMusic- and dance-based interventions can improve motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), but two key questions remain: whether the rhythmic complexity of music influences intervention outcomes, and whether social interaction further enhances these effects.ObjectivesTo examine the effects of rhythmic complexity and interpersonal synchronization on subjective and objective movement responses to music in PD.MethodParticipants tapped to the beat of music with varying levels of rhythmic complexity across three cueing conditions: music alone, music with a visual beat cue, a…

Music as a Gateway to Men's Mental Health: A Theoretical Framework for Masculinity-Congruent Intervention.

Men consistently underutilize formal mental health services due to masculinity norms that frame help-seeking as incompatible with masculine identity. This opinion piece proposes the gateway mechanism as a theoretical framework for understanding why music-based interventions may be particularly effective for reaching men who resist conventional services. The gateway mechanism is defined as the process by which a masculinity-congruent, non-clinical activity may create the psychological safety, relational trust, and reduced self-stigma through which men gradually move toward emotional disclosure …

Effects of Music Perception on Language Development in Children With Cochlear Implants: A Systematic Review.

Children with cochlear implants (CIs) have difficulties developing overall language skills due to a lack of neurological adjustment for multimodality inputs. Fortunately, music perception might play a role in strengthening the connection between auditory and motor perception, as language and music have shared neural mechanisms in the left hemisphere of the brain. This review synthesized the recently peer-reviewed studies on the role of music perception in language development for children with CIs by containing the search on pertinent keywords in eight databases following systematic inclusion …

Prevalence and reporting of sexual harassment and sexual assault at live music events in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Sexual misconduct (SM), which encompasses sexual harassment and assault, is a significant public health issue with myriad short- and longer-term adverse impacts. Data from Europe, Australia and Africa suggest that SM is endemic to live music events. However, few have examined the prevalence of SM at live music events in the USA. METHODS: We surveyed US adults who attended at least one live music event in the previous year using an online questionnaire to examine the prevalence and reporting of SM at live music events. Respondents (n=1091) were recruited through digital channels of…

Individuals with substance use disorders experience an increased urge to move to complex music.

Substance use disorders disrupt the dopaminergic system of the human brain, which plays a central role in movement and reward processing, altering perception, and cognition. The pleasurable urge to move to music, known as groove, relies on dopamine for reward, anticipation, beat perception, and motor system activity. Using a well-established paradigm, which shows an inverted-U relationship between groove and musical complexity, we investigated how dopamine downregulation from long-term cocaine and heroin use affects the experience of music. Drug users experienced stronger groove with high rhyt…

How Switching Musical Instruments Affects Pitch Discrimination for Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) users struggle with music perception. Generally, they have poorer pitch discrimination and timbre identification than peers with normal hearing, which reduces their overall music appreciation and quality of life. This study's primary aim was to characterize how the increased difficulty of comparing pitch changes across musical instruments affects CI users and their peers with no known hearing loss. The motivation is to better understand the challenges that CI users face with polyphonic music listening. The primary hypothesis was that CI users would be more aff…
