This study examined the variation among ethnic populations in prevalence of anemia, vitamin D and B12 deficiencies among refugee children. A retrospective chart review of 388 government assisted refugee children ≤ 16 years of age, seen at the Refugee Health Clinic in Kitchener, Canada from January 2009 to December 2014 was conducted. Eighty-two children (47 boys and 35 girls) underwent surgery for a variety of causes resulting in volvulus. There were 20 neonates, 13 infants, 34 patients aged 1 to 5 years, and 15 children above 5 years of age. The majority (88%) of the patients were admitted in a state of shock and dehydration. A 7-month-old Myanmar boy was admitted with a 3-day history of fever. He was markedly pale and his temperature was 38·2°C.
