Living with persistent illness and uncertainty: Patient narratives on Lyme disease in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Persistent, unexplained symptoms attributed by patients to Lyme disease present significant challenges within healthcare systems where diagnostic uncertainty and contested legitimacy shape clinical and institutional responses. This qualitative study draws on in-depth interviews with individuals in Nova Scotia who experience persistent symptoms following suspected or confirmed Lyme disease. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach informed by the embodied health movement framework, the analysis examines how participants interpreted their experiences and navigated interactions with health

Measuring brain sensitivity to semantic distance in spoken narrative comprehension.

Discourse comprehension requires simultaneous integration of local and global constituents. When hearing a narrative, for example, listeners must link the meaning of each incoming word to the preceding word (local context) while also assimilating its meaning into the broader gist of a story (global context). Thus, the brain simultaneously constructs meaning at different time scales and with different levels of granularity. Our understanding of the brain's division of labor in processing local versus global semantic distance relationships is limited. In this study we ask specifically how the se

Finding meaning in the meaningless. How narrative meaning-making relates to post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress disorder in victims of the Strasbourg Christmas market attack.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic events may deeply modify one's views on oneself, others and the world. Finding meaning after traumatic events may be determinant to psychological adjustment and post-traumatic growth. OBJECTIVES: Our study aims at investigating the association of narrative meaning-making with post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress disorder among individuals exposed to a terrorist attack. METHODS: We recruited participants exposed to December 2018 Strasbourg Christmas market attack. The participants narrated three memories: their experience of the terrorist attack (TAM) and two

Empowering narratives: aid to self-help for Ukrainian refugees: a randomized controlled trial of Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) delivered by supervised Ukrainian health workers in Norway.

Background: The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in forced displacement, with over six million Ukrainian refugees across Europe, of whom 81,770 are residing in Norway. This displacement and, in many cases, preceding war experiences, has led to increased vulnerability to trauma and mental health challenges. There is to date little knowledge about the extent to which structured mental health interventions can mitigate symptoms in Ukrainian refugees. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), a short-term trauma-focused intervention, has demonstrated efficacy in reducing post-traumatic stress diso

Dental Superheroine: A Culturally Adapted Storytelling Strategy for Oral Health Education in Rural Peru.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Oral health problems remain a serious concern in rural areas of underdeveloped countries, where high rates of dental caries and periodontal disease are worsened by limited access to health education. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a culturally adapted dental superheroine to promote oral hygiene practices by encouraging oral health education. METHODS: This study was conducted in two phases. The first phase involved designing the character and adapting it culturally through stakeholder interviews and qualitative analysis. In the second phase, the superheroine w

How Much Does Syntactic Complexity Contribute to the Oral Narrative Performance of Prelingually Deaf Mandarin-Speaking Children With Cochlear Implants?

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the discourse-level syntactic complexity of school-age Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs) and its relationship with their oral narrative performance. METHOD: Oral narrative samples were spontaneously elicited from 34 school-age CI children and 34 normal-hearing (NH) controls through a picture description task. Subjective evaluation was conducted to assess oral narrative performance, focusing on discourse and articulation domains. Discourse-level syntactic complexity was quantified through fine-grained linguistic and cognitive measureme

Narratives of incarcerated women in a Prison in Malawi: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In Malawi, women in prisons make up 2.7% of the total prison population. However, the experiences of women incarcerated are not well documented in the literature. We aim to describe the experiences of women incarcerated in a Malawian prison facility. We will concentrate on the qualitative findings that highlight the unique perspectives of these women, including those in which they are imprisoned alongside their children, as well as the larger implications for child welfare and prison policy. METHODS: A qualitative approach using descriptive study design was used to explore the exp

Evaluation of a Flexible Artist-Facilitated Storytelling Intervention on a Palliative Care Unit.

CONTEXT: Narrative interventions have been shown to be appropriate and feasible in palliative care for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals alike. However, such interventions lack customizability, are resource and time intensive, and are often facilitated by clinical staff who have minimal training in story development. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate a single, brief, artist-facilitated storytelling session on a palliative care unit and analyze stories with the five elements of close reading in narrative medicine. METHODS: A professional storyteller facilitated sessions with patients, car

The importance of structural elements in narrative persuasion: Using the narrative immersion model to promote melanoma prevention.

Narrative health and risk messaging is most effective when audiences become immersed in the story. The narrative immersion model (NIM) suggests that certain structural elements can increase narrative immersion. Notably, these structural elements are often found in naturally occurring diagnostic narratives (i.e., stories focused on diagnoses). Across two studies, the current research tested four NIM-supported structural elements in the melanoma context. Study 1 (N = 455) tested the effects of point of view, inclusion of a prologue, and explicit time orientation in a melanoma survivor narrative.

Examining Gender-Based Differences in Quantitative Ratings and Narrative Comments in Faculty Assessments by Residents and Fellows.

Background Learner assessments of faculty are widespread in medicine, yet concerns are growing about possible biases in these assessments and their associations with gender disparities. Objective To investigate gender-based differences in how residents and fellows describe faculty (rater effect) and how faculty are described (ratee effect) in faculty assessments, and their associations with teaching effectiveness ratings. Methods We analyzed 2164 trainee assessments of University of Minnesota Medical School faculty from 2019 to 2023 with trainee and faculty gender information and narrative com

Evidence for the efficacy of humanizing narratives to promote support for harm-reduction policies in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Prior work has suggested that harm-reduction policies (HRPs) are influenced by beliefs that the public hold about drug use. The current studies sought to explore if controllability beliefs about addiction are linked with such support for heroin-oriented HRPs and whether aspects of humanizing narratives may be effective in heightening support for HRPs. METHODS: Two studies administered in the United States (total N = 536) used survey designs to assess the causal effects of humanizing narratives on HRP support and controllability beliefs (Study 1) and the specific effect of mortalit

The world through my eyes: A photovoice project with youth experiencing homelessness.

Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are infrequently included in the development, organization, and provision of homelessness-related services. This lack of youth voice and services tailored for their expressed needs can lead to underutilization of services, dissatisfaction, and poor outcomes. Photovoice, a participatory research method, has been used to empower persons from marginalized populations and to provide a platform for them to share their voices. This photovoice project partnered with six YEH (18-20 years old). Participants worked together, with the support of two group facilitator

The Care of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities: Informal (Family) Caregivers' Perspectives.

CONTEXT: The care of adults with intellectual disabilities is marginalized and rarely studied in Poland. In recent years, this issue has gained particular importance, partly due to the increasing life expectancy of people with ID. This paper presents a study of the function of informal caregivers for adults with ID, comprising parents who provide regular, constant, physical and emotional support and assistance with everyday activities to their adult children. Due to cultural and institutional conditions, Polish society sets high expectations for families regarding the care of their dependent m

A Developmental Examination of Narrative Writing in EL and EL1 School Children Who Are Typical Readers, Poor Decoders, or Poor Comprehenders.

This longitudinal study examined story-writing development of students from Grade 4 to Grade 6, comparing the developmental trajectories of English as a first language (EL1s; n = 43) and English learners (ELs; n = 108) in general, and in groups of EL1s and ELs with typically developing and poor reader profiles. In relation to their EL1 or EL reference group, students were classified in Grade 4 as typical readers (n = 72), poor decoders (n = 53), or poor comprehenders (n = 26), with EL1s and ELs proportionally represented in each group. The effects of language, grade level, and reading group on

Using Photovoice to Understand Suicidality Among Gay, Bisexual, and Two-Spirit Men.

This study explored the drivers of suicidality from the perspectives of gay, bisexual, and two-spirit men (GB2SM) with a history of suicidality. Twenty-one GB2SM participated in this photovoice study taking photographs to depict and discuss their previous suicidality. Data were collected from in-depth individual interviews in which participants discussed their photographs and in turn offered verbal/narrative accounts of suicidality. Drawing on intersectionality, analyses of the photographs and interview data revealed three interconnected themes. First, adverse childhood events and negative ado

Assessment of narrative writing by Persian-speaking students with hearing impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have highlighted that narrative skill is critical to the development of the literacy skills by children. Children with cochlear implants (CI) and hearing aids (HA) may have problems in narrative development compared to peers with healthy hearing (HH). There is no exact data about the narrative writing ability of Persian-speaking students who are hearing-impaired. This study was undertaken to compare the microstructure and macrostructure scores for narrative writing of Persian-speaking students who are hearing-impaired and peers with HH. DESIGN: This was a cross-sec

Obesity-Associated Heart Failure as a Theoretical Target for Treatment With Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists.

IMPORTANCE: Despite their clinical benefits, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists are greatly underprescribed by most practitioners who treat patients with chronic heart failure. A novel approach to encouraging the use of these drugs is to enhance awareness about the intimate link between aldosterone and obesity. OBSERVATIONS: There is a strong association between abdominal obesity and circulating levels of aldosterone, and markers of abdominal obesity identify patients most likely to benefit from mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism. In a trial of patients with heart failure and a reduced

A Commentary From a Law Enforcement Perspective on The Witch-Hunt Narrative by Ross E. Cheit.

As a result of his assignment to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Behavioral Science Unit, the author consulted on and has firsthand knowledge of most of the cases discussed in Cheit's book. He came to believe that there is a middle ground. Some of what victims allege may be true and accurate, some may be misperceived or distorted, some may be symbolic, and some may be contaminated or false. The problem and challenge, however, is to determine which is which. He basically agrees with much of what Cheit sets forth about seeds of truth in many allegations. He has concerns about some conf
