Nationwide needs assessment on the potential use of virtual reality in teaching birth mechanics: perceptions of students and teaching professionals in midwifery and medicine in Germany.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive understanding of birth mechanics is essential for safe and competent practice in obstetrics and midwifery. These dynamic, three-dimensional processes occur internally and are not directly observable, making them challenging to teach with traditional methods. Virtual Reality (VR) offers unique potential to visualize such complex, invisible mechanisms. This nationwide survey assessed the perceived need, curricular contexts, and preferred content for a high-fidelity VR application to teach birth mechanics in midwifery and medical education. METHODS: An anonymous, digit

"I was in a very deep, dark place... I wasn't prepared for that": A qualitative assessment of the emotional well-being needs of patients undergoing cystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown that cystectomy has a large psychological burden on patients with bladder cancer. However, there has been little work characterizing areas of improvement. This project aimed to understand cystectomy patients' experiences and to identify patient-centered methods to improve perioperative support. METHODS: Five focus groups, divided by diversion type and gender, (4 virtual, 1 in person) of patients with bladder cancer (n = 17) who underwent cystectomy were conducted. Conversations were transcribed and qualitatively analyzed using the Sort and Sift, Think and Shif

Training medical students in physical examination and point-of-care ultrasound: An assessment of the needs and barriers to acquiring skills in point-of-care ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: With growth of the use of point of care ultrasound (PoCUS) around the world, some medical schools have incorporated this skill into their undergraduate curricula. However, because of epidemiology of disease and regional differences in approaches to patient care, global application of PoCUS might not be possible. Before creating a PoCUS teaching course, it is critical to perform a needs analysis and recognize the training obstacles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A validated online questionnaire was given to final-year medical students at our institution to evaluate their perceptions of th

Lasting results: A qualitative assessment of efforts to make community-led total sanitation more inclusive of the needs of people with disabilities in Rumphi District, Malawi.

BACKGROUND: In low-income countries, like Malawi, approaches aimed at improving access to household sanitation for persons with disabilities have been limited, and often do not include post-intervention process evaluations. 6% of Malawi's population reports defecating outside rather than in a sanitation facility, and 4% of its population live with a disability; these groups of individuals live predominantly in rural areas. OBJECTIVE: This article describes a post-program evaluation of an inclusive Community-Led Total Sanitation program that specifically responds to household-level needs of pe

Is Likeability in the Eye of the Beholder? A Quasi-Experimental Study on Personality, Social Anxiety and the Need for Affiliation in Assessing the Likability of Socially Anxious Adults.

While most people desire acceptance and approval from their peers, previous research have shown that for anxious individuals often peers show a reduced willingness to pursue further interactions with them after initial interactions. To gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the process of likability, we conducted two studies. Using a zero-acquaintance paradigm and a quasi-experimental design, we aimed to investigate whether the likability of socially anxious and non-anxious individuals is primarily influenced by first impressions or the extent of their self-disclosure. The seco

Are we adequately managing the oral health needs of children: a survey of the experience of general dentists and self-assessed confidence in pediatric dentistry.

Childhood caries is a public health problem with a significant burden on the community. The specialist dental workforce cannot adequately manage all treatment needs in children. Therefore, the general dental community remains critical in delivering care to children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-rated confidence of general practitioners in treating children. A cross-sectional survey was designed that involved general dentists in various primary care centers in Jordan. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience and self-perceived level of

Perceived needs of disease vector control programs: A review and synthesis of (sub)national assessments from South Asia and the Middle East.

Systems for disease vector control should be effective, efficient, and flexible to be able to tackle contemporary challenges and threats in the control and elimination of vector-borne diseases. As a priority activity towards the strengthening of vector control systems, it has been advocated that countries conduct a vector-control needs assessment. A review was carried out of the perceived needs for disease vector control programs among eleven countries and subnational states in South Asia and the Middle East. In each country or state, independent teams conducted vector control needs assessment…

Assessment of Nutritional Status and Risk of Malnutrition Using Adapted Standard Tools in Patients with Mental Illness and in Need of Intensive Psychiatric Treatment.

People with severe mental illness (SMI) are often in poor physical health, resulting in higher mortality and reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. Although eating habits are one of the main predictors of physical health, few studies assess the nutritional status and eating behavior of people with SMI. The aim of this study was to examine the nutritional status and risk of malnutrition in people with SMI who were in need of intensive psychiatric treatment. The cross-sectional study included 65 inpatients and 67 outpatients with psychotic or depressive disorders from the Ps
