The distribution of subunit A of blood coagulation factor XIII (FXIIIa) was investigated by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method in various oral and maxillofacial tissues. These tissues were from normal tongue, gingiva, lip, and submandibular gland, and from Dilantin gingival hyperplasia (one case), pyogenic granuloma (three cases), peripheral fibroma (four cases), squamous cell carcinoma (seven cases), chronic sclerosing submandibular adenitis (two cases), and fibrous dysplasia of the mandibular bone (one case). The distribution of collagenous components was examined in the same

BACKGROUND: ADAMTS expression can be associated with several inflammatory processes, and has been correlated with tumorigenesis of some neoplasms, but its participation in the development of periapical lesions has not been investigated. Therefore, our objective was to verify the expression of ADAMTS-1, versican and pEGFR in Periapical Granuloma (PG) and in the Radicular Cyst (RC) since they are the most common lesions of the periapex.
METHODS: 25 samples of RC and 10 of PG were used. As a control, 10 samples of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) and 10 of dental follicle (DF) were used. T

INTRODUCTION: Pericarditis is a condition with inflammation of the pericardium; however, most of these conditions are not infective and many of them are not even inflammatory. Pericarditis by its development can be acute, sub-acute and chronic, and later, recurring or relapsing. Apart from idiopathic, the causes of pericarditis are numerous, very often inflammatory, most frequently caused by viruses, or tumours and neoplasms, diseases of connective tissue, vasculitis, different allergic reactions, radiation, thyroid gland diseases, uraemia, dissection of aorta etc.

A notable subset of the recent literature on the disorder neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) describes patients with NF1, facial anomalies, and other unusual findings. We describe a molecular re-evaluation of two such families reported previously by Kaplan and Rosenblatt [1985], who suggested that their NF1 manifestations, facial phenotype, and other findings could result from a disorder distinct from NF1. Submicroscopic deletions involving the NF1 gene were identified in both families by fluorescent in situ hybridization and analysis of somatic cell hybrids. Affected subjects of the first family

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm that commonly arises in the palate, whose occurrence in other intraoral sites is extremely uncommon. We present a case of a 74 years old afro-descendant female presenting an asymptomatic swelling in the lingual region of teeth 32, 33 and 34, with four months of Evolution, promoting an area of bone resorption with imprecise margins. Incisional biopsy revealed proliferative nests of clear cells within a hyalinized fibrous connective tissue. Tumor cells showed immunohistochemical positivity for AE1/AE3, CK7, p63 and ki67 (30%),

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is an uncommon, benign but aggressive osteolytic neoplasm of the craniomaxillofacial region, histologically characterized by an abundance of evenly distributed multinucleated giant cells within a sea of spindle-shaped mesenchymal stromal cells, scattered throughout the fibrovascular connective tissue stroma containing areas of hemorrhage. A rapid diagnostic assessment, together with an adequate histopathologic verification, is essential to improve the management and the prognosis of this locally destructive lesion. A rare case of a large destructive CGCG inv

Primary bladder adenocarcinoma (PBA) is an epithelial malignancy with pure glandular differentiation, without evidence of typical urothelial (transitional cell) carcinoma. PBA is rare, accounting for 0.5%-2% of all malignant bladder neoplasms, and it is seen more frequently in men than in women and is commonly diagnosed in the sixth decade of life.¹⁻³ Clinical presentation includes hematuria and symptoms of bladder irritation.² PBA is common in schistosomiasis-endemic regions and among patients with congenital bladder exstrophy (ectopia vesicae); it mostly arises in the trigone and posterior b

BACKGROUND: Nonmotor symptoms are probably present prior to, early on, and following, a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Nonmotor symptoms may hold important information about the progression of Parkinson's disease.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluated the total early and prediagnostic morbidities in the 3 years before a hospital contact leading to a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.
METHODS: Retrospective morbidity data from Danish National Patient Registry records (1997-2007) of 10,490 adult patients with a secondary care diagnosis of Parkinson's disease were compared with 42,505 control cases.

Fever occurs frequently in several rheumatic disorders, and remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the rheumatologist in spite of the great advances made in the fields of medical diagnosis and technology. It can be the initial symptom of a rheumatic disease, but it can also be the expression of a disease flare, of an infectious complication, of a secondary neoplasm or be of iatrogenic origin. The pathogenesis of fever in rheumatic diseases is still quite unclear; however, recently IL-1, IL-6 and other endogenous pyrogens, such as Tumor necrosis factor, have been shown to play a pivo

Uterine leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma are located at the ends of the spectrum of smooth muscle lesions. Leiomyosarcoma belongs to the complex genomic sarcomas characterized by complex karyotypes. In contrast, leiomyoma, has a low level of chromosomal complexity. The analysis of genomic profiles of uterine smooth muscle tumors shows that genomic complexity, which is an expression of chromosomal instability, correlates with the metastatic potential and malignity of tumors: the more genetically complex a smooth muscle tumor is, the more malignant is its progression. In uterine tumors with uncertai

A 55-year-old white female with a complex medical history including mixed connective tissue disease and peripheral vascular disease developed a group of red-purple papules on her proximal medial thigh that was followed, five months later, by the development of a large violaceous patch. She reported a history of radiation to this site (for melanoma) during her childhood. She was admitted to the hospital with a presumptive diagnosis of cellulitis, but failed to respond to antibiotics. A biopsy was performed and demonstrated a well-differentiated angiosarcoma arising in conjunction with reactive

CCN family protein 2 (CCN2), also widely known as connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), is one of the founding members of the CCN family of matricellular proteins. Extensive investigation on CCN2 over decades has revealed the novel molecular action and functional properties of this unique signalling modulator. By its interaction with multiple molecular counterparts, CCN2 yields highly diverse and context-dependent biological outcomes in a variety of microenvironments. Nowadays, CCN2 is recognized to conduct the harmonized development of relevant tissues, such as cartilage and bone, in the sk

Primary or initial lymphatics cannot readily be recognised by conventional histological methods because they have usually collapsed in excised tissues. We have investigated the distribution of 81 initial lymphatics in 24 specimens of normal tissue and specimens from 11 squamous cell carcinomas and their relationship with the invasion of carcinoma. We used indirect injection methods and the distended initial lymphatics were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The lymphatics were arranged in a network consisting of integrated lymph capillaries and precollectors in the subepithelial area. T

Intraperitoneal implantation of V2 carcinoma cells in the rabbit leads to invasion of the mesentery and to structural tissue alterations which are concomitantly of a destructive and a desmoplastic type. In this report, we describe the desmoplastic changes which are characterized by the increased formation of collagen and of proteoglycans resulting in an increased thickness of the membrane. Biochemical data indicate that the total amount of collagen increases with time after implantation, whereas the relative amount per unit of dry weight, as well as the contributions of type I (15-25%) and typ

ABSTRACT: The phenomenal extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling of the cervix that precedes the myometrial contraction of labour at term or preterm appears to share some common mechanisms with the occurrence, growth, invasion and metastasis of cervical carcinoma. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-dependent endopeptidases that are pivotal to the complex extracellular tissue modulation that includes degradation, remodelling and exchange of ECM components, which contribute to homeostasis under normal physiological conditions such as cervical remodelling during pregnancy and puerperium.
