Thymic malignancies are rare neoplasms, with thymoma and thymic carcinoma-collectively known as thymic epithelial tumors (TETs)-being uncommon tumors that originate from the thymus. Despite their rarity, TETs are the most prevalent tumors found in the anterior mediastinum of adults. The major histological types include squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoid epithelioid carcinoma, and basal-like carcinoma. Thymic enteric type adenocarcinoma, an exceptionally rare variant characterized by the expression of cytokeratin (CK) 20 and/or CDX-2, has been recently proposed as a distinct pathological entity,

Penile cancer is relatively rare in North America and Europe (<1% of all malignant neoplasms); however, it remains a significant health concern with a higher propensity of cases in many African, South American, and Asian countries. It occurs primarily in older men with a peak incidence in the 6th decade of life. The etiology of penile cancer is multifactorial and there are many risk factors including lack of neonatal circumcision, chronic inflammation, lichen sclerosis, tobacco use, obesity, poor hygiene, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, history of sexually transmitted diseases, and human pa

Skin and subcutaneous tissue tumors are the most common neoplasms in dogs. The most common sites of origin in dogs include digits, skin and the oral cavity including cheek and retromandibular area. We investigated canine squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) samples from 15 dogs and classified them histopathologically according to the degree of differentiation. bFGF, VEGF-C, TGF-β, PDGF-A, PDGF-C and PDGFR-α expressions were assessed using immunohistochemistry to determine the roles of growth factors during SCC. We found that TGF-β1 immunolabeling was elevated significantly compared to healthy control

The tongue is a complex organ involved in speech and expression as well as in gustation, mastication, and deglutition. The oral cavity, along with the tongue, are sites of neoplasms, reactive processes, and infections, and may be a harbinger of systemic diseases. This review includes both common and rare diseases that occur on the tongue, including: vascular and lymphatic lesions (infantile hemangiomas and oral varices), reactive and inflammatory processes (hairy tongue, pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue, benign migratory glossitis, and fissured tongue), infections (oral hairy leukopl

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genetic disease characterised by defective DNA repair leading to clinical and cellular hypersensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. The oculocutaneous features of 10 patients with XP were studied retrospectively. General features included parental consanguinity (40%), familiarity (60%), onset of symptoms in first 2 years (50%), malignant skin neoplasms (60%), and carcinoma of the tongue (20%). Among the ocular features, 50% of patients presented with photophobia. Lid freckles or atrophic skin lesions were seen in all patients. Lower lid tumours were seen in 3

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is most commonly found in the parotid gland. It rarely occurs in the larynx and hypopharynx. There are only 32 reported cases from these areas. A case of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hypopharynx is presented. Although the initial impression was squamous cell carcinoma, glandular structures were found in metastatic lymph nodes in the neck specimen, and after mucicarmine stains were positive, the final diagnosis was changed to mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This case illustrates the difficulty in diagnosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma, especially in unexpected locations. Di

The modifying effects of three doses of dietary protocatechuic acid (PCA) given the initiation and postinitiation phases of oral carcinogenesis initiated with 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) were investigated in male F344 rats. At 6 weeks of age, rats were divided into experimental and control groups and fed the diet containing PCA at various doses of 0 g/kg diet (basal diet alone), 0.5 g/kg diet (500 ppm), 1 g/kg diet (1000 ppm), and 2 g/kg diet (2000 ppm). At 7 weeks of age, all animals except PCA alone and control groups were given 4-NQO (20 ppm) in the drinking water for 8 weeks to induce

Cystic lesions of the pancreas can be divided into true cysts, pseudocysts, and cystic neoplasms. Lymphoepithelial cysts (LECs) are a type of true cyst that can mimic pseudocysts and cystic neoplasms. LECs are rare lesions; fewer than 90 cases have been reported in the English language literature. The case of a 60-year-old man with an LEC of the pancreas is reported. He was admitted with upper abdominal discomfort. Computed tomography showed a 64 × 39 mm cystic mass in the retroperitoneum behind the duodenum and inferior caval vein. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right-sided mass on T1-

Because of the unique anatomic structure of the nipple, a few specific breast lesions occur only at this site. Large lactiferous sinuses may be involved by inflammatory conditions such as squamous metaplasia of lactiferous ducts and ductal ectasia or be the site of uncommon superficial epithelial neoplasms such as nipple adenoma or syringomatous tumor of the nipple. Paget disease of the nipple may be secondary to intraepidermal extension of ductal carcinoma in situ in the underlying lactiferous ducts or develop from malignant transformation of Toker cells. Invasive breast cancer may also arise

The so-called "Ackerman's tumor" is a neoplasm of uncertain dignity. Aim of this paper is to clarify, whether this is an asbestos-induced tumor of the larynx in accordance with German regulations for occupational diseases. A 43-year old male presented the clinical picture of a stenosing laryngeal tumor. A verrucous neoplasm without a proven malignity in the sense of an Ackerman's tumor was diagnosed through several sequential biopsies. Approximately 2 years later a total laryngectomy was performed, because of a squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. An occupational disease in accordance with 4

Expression of keratinocyte transglutaminase, a specific differentiation marker, has been examined by immunogold-silver cytochemistry in human epidermis and oral epithelium, and in oral mucosal hyperplasia and neoplasia. Two major findings have been obtained. First, considerable immunoreactivity was evident not only at the plasma membrane (the site of cross-linked envelope formation) but also in the cytoplasm of spinous cells, suggesting a cytoplasmic function for this transglutaminase. Staining at the cell border was seen principally in the granular layer of orthokeratinized epithelium (epider

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of abnormal anal cytology in women presenting with abnormal cervical cytology (intraepithelial lesion or cervical cancer) at the largest tertiary university hospital in Thailand.
METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study design was used. Anal cytology was performed on 145 women with abnormal cervical cytology between June 2014-Octoble 2014. If abnormal anal cytology was detected, anoscopy was performed with biopsy in any suspicious area of precancerous change.
RESULTS: Prevalence of abnormal anal cytology was 5.5% (8 patients

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common neoplasms affecting the oral cavity and the face. Its more differentiated forms may be associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.
CASE REPORT: In this paper, we report the case of an 86-year-old patient with a well-differentiated SCC of the lower lip associated with HPV treated with surgery with a non-complete histological resolution. Imiquimod 5% cream was applied on the surgical scar once a day for two weeks and then once a week. Two years after SCC removal, no relapse has occurred.
CONCLUSIONS: Topical imiquim

Leiomyosarcomas are malignant tumors displaying strong smooth muscle differentiation. They can often develop within the GI tract and myometrium, but are particularly rare in the head and neck. Perineurial spread of head and neck cancer is observed in patients with neoplasms of the skin (squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma) or skin appendages (adenoid cystic carcinoma). We report the case of a woman who presented with diplopia and headaches. MRI showed an infratemporal mass lesion and faint enhancement tracking along the mandibular nerve into the wall of the right cavernous sinus. A nerve biopsy

Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare malignant sweat gland tumor, representing less than 0.01% of all cutaneous neoplasms, with eccrin differentiation. Its acrosynringeal origin and physiopathology still remain discussed. The prognosis of this carcinoma is held to be poor with a significant risk of lymph node metastasis and local recurrence. Also, this not specific tumor can be a challenging histological diagnosis, in particular, in Bowenoid variant. We report a case of Bowenoid and keratinizing variant of eccrine porocarcinoma of the left ring finger with pejorative evolution and initial diagnosis

Tuberculosis of the tongue is a very rare event even in areas and countries in which tuberculosis is endemic. The disease can present itself in a variety of clinical appearances, most of which may mimic malignant lingual neoplasms clinically. In this case, we present a patient who initially complained of an ulcerated lingual swelling, which was suspected to be a squamous cell carcinoma on clinical examination. In addition, the diagnosis was missed on the first and initial biopsy as it was not representative of the lesion. The diagnosis of lingual tuberculosis was made by histopathology on a se

A malignant myoepithelioma is one of the rarest salivary gland neoplasms which may either arise de novo or develop within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma or benign myoepithelioma. The parotid gland is the most common primary site and the palate the most common intra-oral site of occurrence. Herein is present a case of a malignant myoepithelioma arising in the hard palate of a 79-year-old woman. The lesion had been examined by biopsy at another hospital, and diagnosed as a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The patient underwent a wide local tumor resection. Examination of the res

BACKGROUND: Carotid sheath may include a variety of lesions such as neurogenic or vascular, tumors originating from extra-adrenal chromaphil cells, squamous cell carcinomas, and lymphomas. Hemangiomas are benign congenital neoplasms, which, when located in the head and neck region, may be easily misdiagnosed due to their infrequent localization.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report an unusual case of cavernous hemangioma of the infrahyoid carotid sheath presenting as palpable mass in a 51-year-old woman with no prior medical history. A review of the literature was performed to investigate the radio

Fifty-four patients with primary neoplasms of the anterior skull base were treated by craniofacial resection with curative intent. The most common tumor was esthesioneuroblastoma (24), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (10). The overall 2-year and 5-year survivals were 75% and 49%, respectively. High-grade tumors, grades 3 and 4, had a poorer prognosis. Tumor size, dural involvement, sphenoid sinus involvement, age, and sex had no significant influence on survival when examined by multivariate survival analysis. Sixteen complications were noted in the postoperative period. Cerebrospinal flui

Carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) is a rare neoplasm of the thyroid gland resembling lymphoepithelioma-like and squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus and is thought to arise from ectopic thymic tissue within the thyroid gland or rudimentary branchial pouches along the thymic line. Using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), chromosomal imbalances have been detected in several types of thymomas and thymic carcinomas. To evaluate whether there are hints of an underlying sequence in the pathogenesis of CASTLE analogue to those found in thymomas and thymic carcinomas, we evaluated
