[Post-radiation brachial plexus disease. Clinical and neurophysiological study].

Nine patients who developed 11 brachial plexopathies after a radiation therapy for cancer have been studied. They clinically showed heterogeneity in the common criteria used to establish the differential diagnosis between post-radiation and tumoral brachial plexopathies (PRBP and TBP) and specially within the period free of symptoms from the end of radiation, and the presence and intensity of pain. Neurophysiological studies showed a diffused neurogenic lesion with muscular denervation associated to motor and sensory nerve conduction impairment on proximal segments of the arm. Somatosensory ev

[Neuralgic amyotrophy. A clinical and neurophysiologic longitudinal study of 3 cases].

The Authors describe three cases of neuralgic amyotrophy examined clinically and neurophysiologically at the onset of symptoms and after six months. At that time patients showed an objective improvement in strength and functions, though a few SEP and EMG alterations persisted. These findings are considered of out discrepancy between clinical and neurophysiological picture.

Spinal arteriovenous malformations and fistulae: clinical, neuroradiological and neurophysiological findings.

Twenty-six patients with myelographic signs suggestive of a spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) were examined neurologically and neurophysiologically. By selective spinal angiography it was possible to differentiate between dural arteriovenous fistulae (dAVF 20 patients) and intradural AVMs (iAVM, 6 patients). Initial complaints were nonspecific and variable, mainly consisting of sensory disorders and muscle weakness. Later, patients suffered involvement of both the upper and lower motor neurons. There was a high percentage of lower motor neuron lesions (95%), especially in dAVF patients,

Combined neurophysiological studies in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a case report.

EEG and brain mapping (on basal conditions and after i.v. administration of diazepam) and visual, somatosensory and auditory evoked potentials have been performed on a patient at terminal evolution of CJD. These combined neurophysiologic studies indicated that very important functional impairments of either thalamic-frontal circuits and frontal, parietal and occipital cortex were associated with absent or mild dysfunction of the visual, somatosensory and auditory subcortical pathways. Combined neurophysiologic studies are important to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of neurod

Neurophysiologic assessment of trigeminal function after surgery for trigeminal neuralgia.

To assess the function of the three trigeminal divisions, we studied corneal reflex, early and late blink reflexes, early and late masseter silent periods, and jaw jerk in normal subjects and in 35 patients submitted to surgery for trigeminal neuralgia. The corneal reflex was most sensitive to thermocoagulation and the jaw jerk to microcompression; the other reflexes showed an intermediate behavior, depending on afferent fiber size. Trigeminal function was less impaired after microcompression and recovered earlier than after thermocoagulation.

The central projections of carotid baroreceptors and chemoreceptors in the cat: a neurophysiological study.

The medullary projections of afferent neurons with cell bodies in the petrosal ganglion have been investigated using an antidromic mapping technique. Of the ninety-three units studied, fifty-eight were shown to have patterns of discharge indicating that they were baroreceptors and thirty-five showed responses to stimuli indicating that they were arterial chemoreceptors. Twelve baroreceptor and thirteen chemoreceptor afferents had sufficiently stable unitary discharges to permit a detailed estimation of some of their central projections using stimulation through monopolar tungsten micro-electro

Wernicke's encephalopathy. A case report with neurophysiologic and CT-scan studies.

A case of Wernicke's encephalopathy with ataxia, confusion, memory loss, partial seizures of complex behavior and hypothermia, subsequent to thiamine depletion due to chronic malnourishment and triggered by an episode of acute vomiting and diarrhea, is reported, Computerized tomography (CT-scan) depicted small bilateral lesions in areas adjacent to the walls of the third ventricle, common location of the lesions seen in autopsy material of Wernicke's encephalopathy. Early diagnosis and treatment with vitamin B complex supplemented with intensive mnemonic and cognitive therapy led to complete r

[Early childhood autism from the behavioral biologic and neurophysiologic viewpoint].

Assuming that the autistic syndromes my be attributed to disturbances in information input and processing, the results of the most important behavioural and neurophysiological investigations made during the past 10 to 15 years are introduced and discussed in brief. Etiological questions are raised, too. Disturbed perception in different sensory systems may also be considered as partial disablement. The environment's reaction to the disturbances potentiates the child's disturbed communication with the environment. It is pointed to that similar behavioural patterns are also known from animal eti

[Syndromic diversities in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: neurophysiological and histopathological correlates].

Two syndromatic forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are illustrated with data from two cases confirmed by necropsy and studied by means of electroencephalogram, evoked potential recording and neuropathological techniques. One of the cases presented the typical hypersynchronous periodic discharges through to be characteristic of this disease. The other did not exhibit epileptiform discharges, showing an evolution in which progressive diffuse slowing was the prominent feature. Cortical spongyosis, gliosis, and neuronal lose were intense in the case showing spikes, and moderate in the one without

Integral storage and voiding reflexes. Neurophysiologic concept of continence and micturition.

It is a common clinical misconception to regard the spinal micturition reflex center as fundamentally overactive and dependent on cerebral inhibition. Initiation and cessation of micturition is simplistically viewed as a manifestation of voluntary withdrawal and resumption of inhibitory corticospinal "regulation''. This view is in conflict with basic neurophysiologic experimental data. Actually, the organization of the micturition reflex is extremely complex. It is affected by multiple sources of facilitative and inhibitory influence, peripheral as well as central. During the past half century

[Hypersomnia by isthmic lesion in cat. II. Neurophysiological and pharmacological study].

(1) The bilateral destruction of the region of the dorsal norepinephrine bundle in the isthmus or in the mesencephalon induces a significant increase of both paradoxical sleep (PS) (up to 400%) and of slow-wave sleep (SWS). The increase of PS lasts for 4-5 days while the increase of SWS lasts at least 8-10 days. The same phenomenon is observed after total hypophysectomy. (2) control lesions effectuated in the isthmus outside the area of the dorsal norepinephrine bundle do not affect significantly the slee-walking cycle. (3) pretreatment with p-chlorophenylalanine suppresses the increase of sle

An MRI-compatible electrode implantation system for linking behavioral neurophysiology and stimulation-evoked fMRI in non-human primates.

Local electrophysiology and microstimulation reveal site-specific neural activity and physiological effects but do not directly link these local effects to whole-brain responses from the same target site. We developed an MRI-compatible electrode implantation system for macaques that enables CT/MRI-based localization, postoperative depth adjustment, neural recording, microstimulation during behavioral testing, and subsequent electrical microstimulation combined with functional MRI (EM-fMRI) using the same implanted electrode. The system supported local field potential recording, a stimulation-i

The intrinsic reason why complementary tests (clinical neurophysiology, neuroimaging, skin biopsy) cannot establish the diagnosis of neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain is defined as pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system. Current algorithms for neuropathic pain diagnosis include patient history, clinical examination, and complementary tests to confirm a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system, able to change the diagnosis of neuropathic pain from probable to definite. These tests include clinical neurophysiology, such as pain-related evoked potentials, quantitative sensory testing, skin biopsy to measure intraepidermal nerve fiber density, or magnetic resonance imaging. However, these tests are e…
