Influence of smoking on gingival crevicular fluid cytokines in severe chronic periodontitis.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the expression of 22 chemokines and cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from smokers and non-smokers with periodontitis and periodontally healthy control subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty subjects with generalized severe chronic periodontitis (20 smokers and 20 non-smokers) and 12 periodontally healthy control subjects participated in this study. Four diseased and two healthy sites were selected from each of the periodontitis subjects. GCF samples were collected and cytokines analysed utilizing a multiplexed immunoassay (Luminex(®) ). St…

Dose-effect relation of smoking and the interleukin-1 gene polymorphism in periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a bacterial inflammatory disease leading to attachment loss with the consequence of tooth loss. There exists a … periodontitis risk as compared to their IL-1 genotype-negative counterparts. With genotype-negative non-smokers as a reference, logistic regression resulted in odds ratios of 0.98 (95% confidence interval: 0.83 to 1.14), 2.37 (1.96 to 2.87), and 4.50 (2.30 to 8.82) for genotype-positive non-smokers, genotype-negative smokers, and genotype-positive smokers, re …

Pigeon fanciers' lung: effects of smoking on serum and salivary antibody responses to pigeon antigens.

A reduced prevalence of pigeon fanciers' lung has been reported in pigeon breeders who smoke cigarettes. Serum and salivary antibodies to pigeon intestinal mucin and pigeon serum proteins were investigated in 227 pigeon fanciers, subdivided according to smoking habit and clinical status. Smokers had a lower incidence of precipitating antibodies to pigeon antigens and lower titres of serum IgG and IgA antibodies to mucin and to pigeon serum proteins in ELISA compared with non-smokers and ex-smokers. In contrast, IgG antibody titres to tetanus toxoid were similar in smoking and non-smoking group…

Ultrasonographic fractal dimension analysis for quantitative assessment of smoking-related parenchymal pattern complexity of the parotid gland.

Cigarette smoking may induce oxidative, inflammatory, and microvascular alterations in salivary gland tissue. However, subtle parenchymal changes may not be readily appreciable on conventional ultrasonography. This study aimed to evaluate smoking-related differences in image-derived parotid parenchymal pattern complexity using fractal analysis of B-mode ultrasonographic images. This prospective cross-sectional study included 95 adults: 47 smokers and 48 non-smokers. All participants underwent standardized B-mode ultrasonographic evaluation of both parotid glands. Three predefined regions of in…

Obese Smokers as a Potential Subpopulation of Risk in Tobacco Reduction Policy.

Smoking and obesity represent the largest challenges to public health. There is an established inverse relationship between body mass index (BMI) and smoking, but this relationship becomes more complicated among obese smokers. Smokers with higher BMI consume more cigarettes per day and may be more nicotine-dependent than lean smokers. Rates of obesity are lower among smokers than non-smokers, indicating that chronic exposure to tobacco smoke may prevent excess weight gain in people who would otherwise become obese. Furthermore, obese smokers may be more sensitive to the weight-suppressive and …

Cigarette Smoking, Coronary Plaque Burden and Phenotype: A Multimodality Meta-Analysis and Implications for Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring in Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Despite the widespread use of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring as a risk stratifier for preventive therapy, smokers frequently present with acute coronary syndromes despite minimal coronary calcification. We performed a multimodality meta-analysis to quantify the association between smoking and coronary plaque burden and phenotype using CCTA, IVUS, and OCT. METHODS AND RESULTS: We systematically searched multiple databases through June 2026 for imaging studies comparing smokers with never-smokers.

Inflammatory Biomarkers in Smokers: Implications for Ligamentum Flavum Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND Ligamentum flavum (LF) hypertrophy is a key contributor to spinal pathologies such as lumbar and cervical disc herniations and spinal stenosis. Smoking, as a modifiable lifestyle factor, is implicated in systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, potentially exacerbating LF hypertrophy. This study aimed to compare the expression of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in the lumbar ligamentum flavum from 27 smokers and 31 non-smokers. MATERIAL AND METHODS LF tissue samples were collected during …
