An intensified trans-sectoral nutritional intervention in malnourished patients with chronic pancreatitis improves diseases prognosis and identifies potential biomarkers of nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a common complication in chronic pancreatitis and associated with reduced quality of life and life expectancy. Nutritional support is considered mandatory in malnourished patients with chronic pancreatitis but there is only scarce evidence on optimal treatment modalities and the efficacy of nutrition therapy. Here, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of an intensified nutritional intervention in malnourished patients with chronic pancreatitis and aimed to identify suitable indicators for monitoring nutritional status. METHODS: We performed a single-arm fea…

Clinical observation and influence on nutritional status of intensive nutritional nursing combined with 3-day dietary diary intervention in peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis is a commonly used treatment for chronic kidney failure patients. Studies have shown that long-term peritoneal dialysis can lead to various degrees of malnutrition. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the nutritional conditions of patients with peritoneal dialysis. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects of intensive nutritional nursing combined with a 3-day diet diary intervention on the nutritional condition of peritoneal dialysis patients. METHODS: In total, 163 patients were included in this study and, after 6 mo

Impact of an Oral Nutrition Supplement on the Nutritional Status of Stunted and At-Risk of Stunting Children: A Community-Based Intervention Trial.

Introduction: Stunting is associated with poor nutritional intake during early childhood. This study evaluated the effect of a daily intake of 510 mL of an oral nutritional supplement for 180 days on linear growth among children with stunting and at-risk of stunting aged 12-36 months. Methods: A community-based, single-arm intervention was conducted among 91 children in Kelantan, Malaysia. The children at enrolment had height-for-age Z-scores (HAZs) between <-1.0 SD and >-3 SD based on WHO Growth Standards. Anthropometric measurements were collected at baseline (T0), 90 days (T90; mid-interven

Mitigated Impact of Provision of Local Foods Combined with Nutrition Education and Counseling on Young Child Nutritional Status in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: In Cambodia, stunting and wasting affect, respectively, 32% and 10% of children 0⁻59 months while 55% are anemic. Our research aims to assess the efficiency of two local foods combined with nutritional education and counseling (CEN) activities as compared to CEN alone on improving child nutritional status and dietary intake. METHODS: A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted in Soth Nikum area over a six-month period among children 6⁻23 months (n = 360) assigned to receive either moringa +CEN, cricket +CEN or CEN alone. Anthropometric measurements were performed and hemo…

Dietary intake, physical activity and nutritional status in adults: the French nutrition and health survey (ENNS, 2006-2007).

The French National Programme on Nutrition and Health (Programme national nutrition santé (PNNS)), the aim of which is to reduce nutrition-related chronic diseases, necessitates monitoring of nutritional characteristics. Our objective was to describe dietary intake, physical activity and nutritional status in a national sample of adults, especially according to current French recommendations. The study is based on a cross-sectional population-based survey using a multistage sampling design (Etude nationale nutrition santé (ENNS)). Between February 2006 and March 2007, 3115 18-74-year-old adult…

Baseline Nutritional Status and Early Treatment Response in Oropharyngeal Cancer: A Prospective Cohort Study by HPV Status (FIS 19 Study).

Background/Objectives: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a well-established prognostic marker in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC); however, the short-term treatment response remains heterogeneous, particularly among HPV-positive patients. Given the high prevalence of malnutrition in head and neck cancer, this study examined whether baseline nutritional status, body composition and functional status were associated with early treatment response in OPSCC according to HPV status. Methods: A prospective observational multicenter cohort study of newly diagnosed OPSCC patients eligible for …

This study aimed to investigate the effects of fluoxetine on swallowing function, neurotrophic factors, and psychological status in patients with dysphagia after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). A total of 118 patients with dysphagia after AIS who were diagnosed and treated in our hospital from July 2020 to March 2022 were selected as the study objects with 59 cases in each group. Patients in the control group underwent routine treatment and swallowing rehabilitation without fluoxetine. Patients in the study group received routine treatment, swallowing rehabilitation, and fluoxetine treatment. The

Soil-transmitted helminthic infection and its effect on nutritional status of adolescent schoolgirls of low socioeconomic status in Sri Lanka.

The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthic infection, living conditions, and practices relating to personal hygiene were studied in schoolgirls (age 14-18 years) in both an urban area (n = 383) and a rural area (n = 231) of Sri Lanka. The impact of helminthic infection on nutritional status was also studied. The prevalence of Ascaris and Trichuris infection was significantly higher (p < 0.00001) in the urban area than in the rural area and this was associated with poor living conditions and personal hygiene. In contrast, the prevalence of hookworm infection was similar in the two areas. Les…

Effects of nutritional interventions on nutritional status in patients with gastric cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nutritional interventions may improve quality of life, morbidity and mortality in gastric cancer (GC) patients. A growing number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluated different nutritional strategies - oral nutritional supplements (ONS), enteral nutrition (EN), enteral immunonutrition (EIN), parenteral nutrition (PN) and nutritional counselling - in GC patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess the effects of these nutritional interventions on nutritional status of GC patients undergoing gastrectomy and/or chemotherapy. METHODS: A systemati…

Beneficial Effect of Educational and Nutritional Intervention on the Nutritional Status and Compliance of Gastric Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy: A Randomized Trial.

Surgery combined with chemotherapy is the standard treatment for gastric cancer (GC); however, chemotherapy-relative adverse effects are common and result in malnutrition and a poor prognosis. In addition, compliance to postoperative chemotherapy remains a problem. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the effect of educational and nutritional interventions on the nutritional status and compliance of GC patients undergoing postoperative chemotherapy. A total of 144 GC patients were randomized into an intervention group that received intensive individualized nutritional and educational …

Pleiotropic effects of GDF-15 to regulate nutritional status: perspectives from body composition to nutrition-related disorders.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15), a stressful cytokine of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, plays pivotal roles … ted nutritional deficiency and aggravation. However, the precise contribution of GDF-15 to evaluate nutritional status and its mechanistic basis across varying disorders is not fully elucidated. In light of these knowledge gaps, we sought to delve into basic research, clinical information and translational evidence, aiming to analyze the molecular regulatory network …

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infection is one of the most common complications for patients after sacrectomy, which often accompanied by poor wound healing, sinus formation and serious metabolic disturbance. HYPOTHESIS: We tried to avoid the surgical site infection caused by feces during early period after surgery through early fasting and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) support, then compared the clinical results of these patients with other patients that received enteral nutrition (EN) early after sacrectomy. METHODS: Forty-eight patients after sacrectomy (the level of sacrectomy above S2)
