Association between bullous pemphigoid and hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Studies have indicated a relationship between bullous pemphigoid (BP) and hypertension, but the findings remain controversial. To examine this association, we conducted a systematic review using studies from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, applying a random-effects model while performing subgroup and sensitivity analyses to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses were performed by country, data source, and sample size. The quality of evidence was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42

A systematic review and meta-analysis on outcomes of valvular heart surgery in Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of valvular heart diseases remain considerably high in Africa, largely but not solely due to rheumatic heart disease. Valvular heart surgeries have emerged as the cornerstone in their management. While several studies have reported data on outcomes following heart valve surgery in many developed countries, there is a staggering paucity of data and evidence reporting the outcomes in the Africa population. The aim of this study is to report the perioperative outcomes following valvular heart surgery in Africa. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Re

Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal for patients with acute respiratory failure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is a common clinical critical syndrome with substantial mortality. Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) has been proposed for the treatment of ARF. However, whether ECCO2R could provide a survival advantage for patients with ARF is still controversial. METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database) were searched from inception to 30 April 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies that examined the following outcomes were included: mortality, length of hospital and ICU sta

Predictors of fatal and nonfatal overdose after prescription of opioids for chronic pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Higher doses of opioids, mental health comorbidities, co-prescription of sedatives, lower socioeconomic status and a history of opioid overdose have been reported as risk factors for opioid overdose; however, the magnitude of these associations and their credibility are unclear. We sought to identify predictors of fatal and nonfatal overdose from prescription opioids. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science up to Oct. 30, 2022, for observational studies that explored predictors of opioid overdose after their prescription for chronic

Study protocol for a longitudinal observational study of disparities in sleep and cognition in older adults: the DISCO study.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive dysfunction, a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the USA and globally, has been shown to disproportionately affect the socioeconomically disadvantaged and those who identify as black or Hispanic/Latinx. Poor sleep is strongly associated with the development of vascular and metabolic diseases, which correlate with cognitive dysfunction. Therefore, sleep may contribute to observed disparities in cognitive disorders. The Epidemiologic Study of Disparities in Sleep and Cognition in Older Adults (DISCO) is a longitudinal, observational cohort study that focuses on

Dietary Effects on Pain Symptoms in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Systematic Review and Future Directions.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is recognized for its difficulty to diagnose and its subjective symptomatology. There is neither a known cure nor a recommended therapeutic diet to aid in the multidisciplinary treatment. We conducted a systematic review to investigate if diets can improve pain symptoms of fibromyalgia. Through the PubMed search in March 2022, 126 abstracts were identified. We included both intervention and observational studies of diets and pain symptoms among patients with FMS. After screening titles, abstracts, and full-texts, 12 studies, including 11 intervention and one observa

Analysis of acute COVID-19 including chronic morbidity: protocol for the deep phenotyping National Pandemic Cohort Network in Germany (NAPKON-HAP).

BACKGROUND: The severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic causes a high burden of acute and long-term morbidity and mortality worldwide despite global efforts in containment, prophylaxis, and therapy. With unprecedented speed, the global scientific community has generated pivotal insights into the pathogen and the host response evoked by the infection. However, deeper characterization of the pathophysiology and pathology remains a high priority to reduce morbidity and mortality of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: NAPKON-HAP is a multi-centered prospec

Prediction of osteoporosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis using machine learning.

Osteoporosis is a serious health concern in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Machine learning (ML) models have been increasingly incorporated into various clinical practices, including disease classification, risk prediction, and treatment response. However, only a few studies have focused on predicting osteoporosis using ML in patients with RA. We aimed to develop an ML model to predict osteoporosis using a representative Korean RA cohort database. The KORean Observational study Network for Arthritis (KORONA) database, established by the Clinical Research Center for RA in Korea, was u
