Evaluation of Postorthodontic Changes in the Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate Patients Using the PAR Index.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dental changes in cleft patients after undergoing orthodontic treatment for at least 2 years. HYPOTHESIS: The dental … pleting treatment to the final results after the retention period. To sustain satisfactory results, orthodontists should plan carefully for the retention period before performing the treatment.

Association of Orthodontic Clear Aligners with Root Resorption Using Three-dimension Measurements: A Systematic Review.

AIM: This paper aims to assess the evidence in the literature reporting orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) in trea … ntic appliances in terms of the risk for developing apical root resorption. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Orthodontists can be more assured about the low-risk of OIIRR associated with clear aligners compared to other orthodontic treatment modalities, and it remains up to the practitioner's assessment to select the appropriate treatment on a case by case basis.

[Diagnosis and management of ankylosed permanent maxillary incisors: proposal for a decision tree].

INTRODUCTION: Ankylosis of a maxillary incisor involves evolutive resorption for which clinical management is difficult for both general practitioners and orthodontists. This anomaly can give rise to potentially major aesthetic, functional and occlusal defects. The ankylosed tooth will be lost, in the short or long term, depending on the bone remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of this review was to determine the different therapeutic options known to date and allow the construction of several clinical decision support systems (summary tables and decision tree). RESULTS: The different…

A Cephalometric Analysis on Magnitudes and Shape of Sella Turcica.

Familiarity with the shape and dimensions of sella turcica is important to recognize and manage pathological conditions of pituitary gland a … with flask-shaped hypophyseal fossa. These observations would be beneficial for the clinicians and orthodontists to design treatment planning in pathology of pituitary gland and in correcting dentofacial anomalies.

Residual craniofacial growth: A cephalometric study of 50 cases.

Although orthodontists focus intensively on the diagnosis and treatment of their patients, they pay less attention to post-treatment development and the risk of relapse often caused by the late growth of the arches and bony base. The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine the growth changes, which can affect craniofacial dimensions in subjects aged between 13 and 17 years. A retrospective longitudinal study including 50 patients (31 girls and 19 boys) whose end of orthodontic treatment coincided with the end of the post-pubertal period (13-14 years) involved a comparison of the cephalo…

Reliability of the SWAG-The Standardized Way to Assess Grafts Method for Alveolar Bone Grafting in Patients With Cleft Lip and Palate.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test a new method, a Standardized Way to Assess Grafts (SWAG), to rate alveolar bone graft (AB … ed using the SWAG scale. Radiographs were scanned, standardized, blinded, and rated by 6 calibrated orthodontists to assess vertical thirds, bony root coverage, and complete bony fill. All radiographs were rated twice, 24 hours apart, by the same raters. MAIN OUTCOMES: Intra- and interrater reliabilities were assessed. RESULTS: Intrarater reliability was good …

Palate Fracture Repair With Light-Cured Resin Splint: Technical Note.

Palate fractures are rare, and their treatment is a matter of debate. Although some investigators have favored rigid plate fixation, others have reported successful treatment without it. Sagittal split and comminuted fractures can require rigid fixation to reduce the maxillary width; however, additional stabilization is needed. Also, palate repair without a splint is complicated by prolonged intermaxillary fixation (IMF), causing stiffness to the temporomandibular joint. We introduce a technique using a rapid light-cured resin (TRIAD TranSheet) frequently used by orthodontists for making denta…

Orthodontists were more likely to favor space closure when the canine was slightly wider and had a less pointed shape and the differences were very small between canine and central incisor in terms of hue, chroma, and lightness. Treatment of severe hypodontia-oligodontia--an interdisciplinary concept.

The authors' experience with oral rehabilitation of patients suffering from oligodontia (i.e. six or more congenitally missing permanent teeth, third molars excluded) is reported. The concept is based on an interdisciplinary team approach involving pedodontists, orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons and prosthodontists. A series of 112 consecutive patients suffering from oligodontia were referred from 1997 to 2001. Ten of the patients (8.9%) suffered from ectodermal dysplasia. The total number of missing teeth was 1126, with an average of 10 per patient. Ninety-two patients had either finished…

Potential for clinical cooperation between dentistry and speech pathology.

Clinical management of articulation dysfunctions is one area in which the joint efforts of dentistry and speech pathology are particularly beneficial. Those articulation deviations discussed result from: (1) deformities in the upper lip, teeth, mandible and the hard and soft palates; (2) introduction of dentures; (3) difficulties in adjusting to esophageal speech; and (4) special problems associated with cleft palate/cleft prepalate. Team management of the individual with cleft palate and/or cleft prepalate was also reviewed. While orthodontists and prosthodontists provide the technology for c…

Interdisciplinary Orthodontic-Endodontic Management of Complex Dental Trauma Involving Three Permanent Anterior Teeth: A Clinical Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Dental trauma presents a considerable challenge for clinicians due to the diverse and complex effects on teeth. Effective management often requires the collaboration of multiple specialists, including endodontists and orthodontists. Case Presentation: This case report presents the interdisciplinary management of a complex dental trauma case involving three permanent maxillary anterior teeth. Unlike most reports of dental trauma, this case includes complete pre-trauma diagnostic records, providing valuable baseline information for treatment planning and out…

Lower facial third projection: Analysis using true vertical lines from subnasale and soft Nasion.

Orthognathic surgery is essential for correcting certain malocclusions and enhancing facial aesthetics. However, determining the ideal positioning of facial structures remains a topic of debate. This study aims to propose numerical references for surgical planning by determining the optimal sagittal projection of the maxillary incisors in aesthetically attractive Caucasian patients. An observational and retrospective study was conducted using cephalometric and photographic records of 89 patients' lateral profiles. These images were evaluated on a 10-point scale by orthodontists, maxillofacial …

Combined orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment in an adolescent patient with traumatically ankylosed incisors: A case report.

Symmetric extraction of premolars is a frequently used orthodontic treatment for dental crowding and protrusion. However, when a patient has incisors with ankylosis, the establishment of a treatment protocol often plagues orthodontists. An adolescent patient with a history of incisor trauma sought treatment for dental protrusion and crowding. Upon percussion of his infrapositioned maxillary central incisors, characteristic dull metallic sounds were noted, and a lack of normal mobility of these teeth under the application of external forces was detected. Follow-up radiographs after the trauma s…

The Efficacy of a New AMCOP® Elastodontic Protocol for Orthodontic Interceptive Treatment: A Case Series and Literature Overview.

BACKGROUND: Elastodontics is a specific interceptive orthodontic treatment that uses removable elastomeric appliances. They are functional appliances that produce neuromuscular, orthopedic and dental effects. Thus, these devices are useful in the developmental age, when skeletal structures are characterized by important plasticity and adaptation capacity, allowing to remove factors responsible for malocclusions. Elastomeric devices are generally well tolerated by patients requiring simple collaboration and management. This work can be useful to update all orthodontists already adopting these a…
