Coupled variations of dissolved organic matter distribution and iron (oxyhydr)oxides transformation: Effects on the kinetics of uranium adsorption and desorption.

The interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) molecules and minerals play significant roles in affecting the fate of carbon and contaminants in soil environment. However, the mechanisms controlling the variations of DOM molecules distribution during the transformation of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, and the effects of these variations on contaminant behaviors are still largely unknown. In this study, the dynamic variations of DOM properties and distributions, and the kinetics of uranium adsorption on and desorption from Fe (oxyhydr)oxides during the transformation were investigated, employing…

Zinc and phosphorus poisoning tolerance of Cu-SSZ-13 and Ce-Cu-SSZ-13 in the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides.

SSZ-13 has been commercialized as a catalyst in diesel engines for the selectivity catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with ammonia (NH3-SCR), but the catalyst is facing the problem of poisoning. Herein, two well-designed catalysts, Cu-SSZ-13 and cerium (Ce) doped Cu-SSZ-13 are synthesized, and their tolerance to zinc (Zn) and phosphorus (P) poisoning alone and together are explored in detail. The research found that Zn and P poisoning alone leads to the destruction of Cu-SSZ-13 structure, resulting in the decline of denitration (de-NOx) performance following the mechanism dominated b…

Influence of dissolved organic matter, kaolinite, and iron oxides on aggregation and transport of biochar colloids in aqueous and soil environments.

The aggregation and transport of biochar colloids (BCs) in the soil and groundwater are critical for applying biochar in the field and assessing long-term environmental risk. This research aimed to study the influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different molecular weights (including humic acid, HA; bovine serum albumin, BSA; deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA) and three minerals (including kaolinite, goethite, and hematite) on the aggregation and transport behaviors of BCs. The adsorption of DOM on the surface of BCs increased the stability, inhibited aggregation, and promoted the transpor

Biogenic carbon encapsulated iron oxides mediated oxalic acid for Cr(VI) reduction in aqueous: Efficient performance, electron transfer and radical mechanisms.

Carbonaceous materials have a potential to mediated oxalic acid (OA) for Cr(VI) reduction, but the rational modification is needed for boosting the mediation of electron transfer. Herein, we utilized polyvinyl alcohol to envelop schwertmannite synthesized by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans biomineralization, and pyrolyzed them to obtain the carbon encapsulated iron oxides (C-2.0-Sch-PVA). SEM and TEM results demonstrated that a moderate calcination temperature would yield a neural network-like carbon encapsulated structure. C-2.0-Sch-PVA efficiently mediated OA to reduce Cr(VI), 98.4% of Cr(VI)…

Selective Ru Adsorption on SnO2/CeO2 Mixed Oxides for Efficient Destruction of Multicomponent Volatile Organic Compounds: From Laboratory to Practical Possibility.

Ru-based catalysts have been extensively employed for the catalytic destruction of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but their versatility for other routine VOCs' destruction has been less explored. Herein, we show that Ru-decorated SnO2/CeO2 mixed oxides can sustain H2O and HCl poisonings and are endowed with extraordinary versatility for a wide range of VOCs' destruction. Selective adsorption of Ru on the cassiterite SnO2 and CeO2 nanorods through a Coulomb force can rationally tune the oxidation and dechlorination centers on decorated catalysts, where the epitaxial growth of Ru…

Characterizing Nitrogen Oxides and Fine Particulate Matter near Major Highways in the United States Using the National Near-Road Monitoring Network.

As part of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) review, a national network of near-road sites was established to characterize pollutant behavior, interaction, and dispersion in the ambient near-road environment. Using spatial interpolation to estimate the near-road concentration increments of NO2 and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm and less (PM2.5) relative to nearby non-near-road monitors, we found that the 2013-2018 national average increment is 6.9 ppb and 1.0 μg m-3 for NO2 a

Dimethyl Ether as the Next Generation Fuel to Control Nitrogen Oxides and Particulate Matter Emissions from Internal Combustion Engines: A Review.

Dimethyl ether (DME) is a new generation fuel produced from natural gas and coal. This fuel can be used directly to a conventional internal combustion (IC) engine without any significant modifications. The main advantage of DME combustion in IC engines is the low NO x and particulate emissions compared with the fossil liquid fuel. Thus, the usage of DME in IC engines is potentially to improve engine efficiency and reduce emissions in the future with minimum attempts. This paper offers a comprehensive review of some topics related to DME as an alternative fuel for IC engines and efforts to incr

Abatement of spinosad and indoxacarb residues in pure water by photocatalytic treatment using binary and ternary oxides of Zn and Ti.

The photodegradation of indoxacarb, a broad spectrum foliar insecticide and spinosad, a natural insecticide containing two active ingredients, spinosyn A (major component) and spinosyn D (minor component), was studied in aqueous suspensions of binary (ZnO and TiO2) and ternary (Zn2TiO4 and ZnTiO3) oxides under artificial light (300-460 nm) irradiation. As expected, the influence of the semiconductor materials on the degradation of both was very significant in all cases. Photocatalytic experiments showed that the addition of semiconductors in tandem with Na2S2O8 as electron acceptor strongly im…

Evaluating the potential of three Fe- and Mn-(nano)oxides for the stabilization of Cd, Cu and Pb in contaminated soils.

The potential of three Fe- and Mn-(nano)oxides for stabilizing Cd, Cu and Pb in contaminated soils was investigated using batch and column experiments, adsorption tests and tests of soil microbial activity. A novel synthetic amorphous Mn oxide (AMO), which was recently proposed as a stabilizing amendment, proved to be the most efficient in decreasing the mobility of the studied metals compared to nano-maghemite and nano-magnetite. Its application resulted in significant decreases of exchangeable metal fractions (92%, 92% and 93% decreases of Cd, Cu and Pb concentrations, respectively). The ads…

Influence of fuel properties, nitrogen oxides, and exhaust treatment by an oxidation catalytic converter on the mutagenicity of diesel engine emissions.

Particle emissions of diesel engines (DEP) content polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) these compounds cause a strong mutagenicity of solvent extracts of DEP. We investigated the influence of fuel properties, nitrogen oxides (NO( x )), and an oxidation catalytic converter (OCC) on the mutagenic effects of DEP. The engine was fuelled with common diesel fuel (DF), low-sulphur diesel fuel (LSDF), rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME), and soybean oil methyl ester (SME) and run at five different load modes in two series with and without installation of an OCC in the exhaust pipe. Particles from the c…

Penetration of nitrogen oxides and particles from outdoor into indoor air and removal of the pollutants through filtration of incoming air.

We studied the effect of ventilation and air filtration systems on indoor air quality in a children's day-care center in Finland. Ambient air nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2) and particles (TSP, PM10) were simultaneously measured outdoors and indoors with automatic nitrogen oxide analyzers and dust monitoring. Without filtration nitrogen oxides and particulate matter generated by nearby motor traffic penetrated readily indoors. With chemical filtration 50-70% of nitrogen oxides could be removed. Mechanical ventilation and filtration also reduced indoor particle levels. During holidays and weekends wh…

Endothelial cell production of nitrogen oxides in response to interferon gamma in combination with tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1, or endotoxin.

Clinical studies using biological response modifiers in cancer therapy have shown that the major dose-limiting toxic effects are hypotension … ukin-1, interleukin-2, muramyl dipeptide, and endotoxin for their effects on production of nitrogen oxides by endothelial cells. Interferon gamma, in combination with tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1 (IL-1), or endotoxin, induced murine brain endothelial cells to secrete nitrites (20-45 microM within 48 hr), which are breakdown products of nitric oxi …

HDL and Oxidation.

In this chapter, we will focus on HDLs' activity of inhibiting LDL oxidation and neutralizing some other oxidants. ApoA-I was known as the main antioxidant component in HDLs. The regulation of antioxidant capacity of HDL is mainly exhibited in regulation of apoA-I and alterations at the level of the HDL lipidome and the modifications of the proteome, especially MPO and PON1. HDL oxidation will influence the processes of inflammation and cholesterol transport, which are important processes in atherosclerosis, metabolic diseases, and many other diseases. In a word, HDL oxidation might be an effe

Oxidative Stress.

The ancestors of Escherichia coli and Salmonella ultimately evolved to thrive in air-saturated liquids, in which oxygen levels reach 210 μM at 37°C. However, in 1976 Brown and colleagues reported that some sensitivity persists: growth defects still become apparent when hyperoxia is imposed on cultures of E. coli. This residual vulnerability was important in that it raised the prospect that normal levels of oxygen might also injure bacteria, albeit at reduced rates that are not overtly toxic. The intent of this article is both to describe the threat that molecular oxygen poses for bacteria and

Oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress refers to the cellular injury and pathologic change that occurs when there is an imbalance favoring oxidants over antioxidants within a living organism. In human medicine, oxidative stress has been implicated in numerous disease processes, which has led to further research into the clinical benefits and efficacy of antioxidant therapy. The evaluation of oxidative stress in the horse has been limited primarily to ischemia-reperfusion injury of the gastrointestinal tract, recurrent airway obstruction, exercise, osteoarthritis, equine motor neuron disease, and pituitary pars inte

Nitric oxide.

PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF NITRIC OXIDE: The generation of nitric oxide by the vascular endothelium maintains a vasodilator tone that is essential for the regulation of blood flow and pressure. In the brain, nitric oxide acts as a mediator of cell-cell signalling. In the peripheral nervous system nitric oxide is also released from many nerves previously classified as non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic. Thus this simple gaseous molecule performs a wide variety of physiological functions. POTENTIAL FOR THERAPEUTIC MANIPULATIONS: Impaired production of nitric oxide can be countered by the administr

Comparison of the enhanced roles of a chemical surfactant and a bio-surfactant in the adsorption of tetracycline onto iron oxides.

The environmental fate of tetracycline (TC, a widely used antibiotic) may be influenced by iron oxide particles and surfactants, which are common in aquatic systems. Currently, the impacts of co-existing surfactants (e.g., chemical and bio-surfactants) on TC adsorption to iron oxides remain poorly understood. This study employed two representative anionic surfactants-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, a synthetic chemical surfactant) and rhamnolipid (Rha, a common glycolipid biosurfactant) to investigate their influences on TC adsorption behaviors onto two typical iron oxide minerals (goethite and h…
