The seventh pandemic of cholera, caused by the seventh pandemic El Tor lineage of Vibrio cholerae, was previously shown to have emanated in three global waves from the Bay of Bengal, bordering Bangladesh and India1. Zoonotic spillover of influenza A viruses into humans has repeatedly triggered pandemics throughout history. Since their emergence in the 1990s, H5N1 influenza viruses have significantly expanded their geographical range and host species, raising global concern about the potential for sustained human-to-human transmission. In this review, we examine the virological characteristics of currently circulating H5N1 strains, key molecular barriers limiting their spread among humans, and critical areas of future research to mitigate the ongoing H5N1 panzootic and prevent future pandemics.

Syphilis, an ancient malady, remains clinically relevant. Recent increases in syphilis cases, especially congenital syphilis, should increase the clinician's index of suspicion when presented with one of the protean clinical syndromes associated with syphilis. Diagnosis and monitoring of response to treatment remain reliant on testing modalities with varying degrees of sensitivity and specificity, requiring clinical discernment. Penicillin remains the recommended treatment in most syphilis cases. New treatment options may be available soon.

PURPOSE: The purpose is to to explore the effects of the Lebanese economic crisis on the ophthalmology workload in Lebanon, and the concomitant influence of the COVID-19-related lockdown and Beirut port explosion.
METHODS: Data pertaining to all the clinic visits to the Ophthalmology Department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center between January 01, 2019, and December 31, 2021, were extracted. Completed visits to different subspecialties were used to analyze the different parameters. All parameters were compared across the 3 years.
