Factors affecting fecal egg counts in periparturient Katahdin ewes and their lambs.

Selection for low fecal egg counts (FEC) can be used to genetically enhance resistance to gastrointestinal nematode parasites in growing lambs, thereby reducing the frequency of use of anthelmintics, facilitating marketing of organic lamb, and reducing the risk of development of anthelmintic resistance by the parasite. Recording of FEC in lambs has, therefore, been incorporated into several national sheep genetic evaluation programs. Ewes in late gestation and early lactation are also vulnerable to parasite infection and commonly experience a periparturient rise in FEC. This study was designed

Candidate serum metabolite biomarkers of subclinical Haemonchus contortus infection in sheep.

Parasitic infection is a major factor negatively affecting sheep production worldwide. The gold standard, fecal egg count, identifies only clinical stages after egg count establishment and shedding in the feces. However, detection at the sub-clinical phase could offer a critical window for strategic deworming and prevent production losses. Blood metabolites often perform as signalling molecules preceding major physiological events; thus, they could provide a prognosis of immunological alterations in the host. Therefore, we conducted a controlled longitudinal study to identify predictive biomar

Application of in vitro anthelmintic sensitivity assays to canine parasitology: detecting resistance to pyrantel in Ancylostoma caninum.

Resistance of the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum to anthelmintic therapy with pyrantel is an emerging problem in canine veterinary practice. Detecting anthelmintic resistance in parasites of pets is problematic because traditional resistance-monitoring techniques used with livestock parasites, such as the faecal egg count reduction test, are often impractical for use in small animals. We used two field-collected isolates of A. caninum in an abbreviated critical trial to test their pyrantel resistance status. The strains showed high-level and low-level resistance, with in vivo pyrantel eff

Prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths and parasites in smallholder pigs reared in the central Free State Province.

Pigs are kept by farmers as a source of livelihood and food. Unfortunately, helminthiasis and other internal parasites are major setbacks to profitable pig production in Africa. There is a lack of information on the prevalence and intensity of gastrointestinal helminths and parasites plaguing resource-poor pig farmers in the Free State. Knowledge of these endemic parasites can be used as baseline data to help design future intervention plans. The aim of this study was to identify and quantify the types of gastrointestinal helminths and parasites prevalent in smallholder pigs reared in the cent

Anthelmintic efficacy of single active and combination products against commonly occurring parasites in foals.

Parasite control in foals is complicated by the concurrent presence of biologically diverse parasites with differing levels of anthelmintic resistance. Several combination anthelmintic products are available for use in horses, but information on their efficacies against important equine parasites is scarce. Two trials were performed in New Zealand during 2008 and 2011 on four different farms with substantially different anthelmintic treatment histories. The first trial evaluated the efficacy of an ivermectin/praziquantel/oxibendazole combination, a single active oxibendazole, and a single-acti

Comparison of In Vitro Efficacy of Six Disinfectants on the Hatching of Larval Eggs of Toxocara canis.

BACKGROUND: The environmental contamination with Toxocara canis eggs increases the risk of dissemination and transmission of the parasite in dogs and paratenic hosts such as humans. We aimed to evaluate different disinfectants to compare their effect on T. canis eggs. METHODS: For its realization, 850 embryonated eggs were obtained, which were suspended in a solution of 5% formaldehyde and distilled water in Eppendorf tubes. In the tubes containing the 850 embryonated eggs, researchers was added 0.5 mL of each solution (enzymatic solution, sodium hypochlorite, iodopovidone, quaternary of ammo

Survey for drug-resistant trichostrongyle nematodes in ten commercial goat farms in west Malaysia.

The prevalence of drug-resistant parasites in goats in West Malaysia has rarely been reported. Ten commercial goat farms were surveyed for resistance to anthelminthics by measuring the reduction in faecal egg counts (FECs) after treatment with levamisole, pyrantel pamoate and fenbendazole. Resistance to fenbendazole was seen in most farms; there was no evidence of resistance to levamisole but some resistance to pyrantel pamoate was detected on one farm. The significance of the findings are discussed.

Gastrointestinal parasites in small ruminants from Grenada, West Indies: A coprological survey and a review of necropsy cases.

Gastrointestinal parasites are important in small ruminant farming because they can impact negatively on the productivity of animals. The objectives of the present study were to estimate the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites and to assess mortality attributable to gastrointestinal parasite infection in sheep and goats. We collected fecal samples from 114 sheep and 292 goats from 34 farms for coprological examination. In addition, we evaluated necropsy records for sheep and goats that were submitted from 2002 to 2016 to the pathology diagnostic laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medi

Risk factors associated with enteric parasite infection in pigs raised in different production systems.

Brazilian swine farming relies on diverse production systems where maintaining animal health is fundamental. Parasitic diseases represent a significant factor affecting swine performance and public health, especially in the case of gastrointestinal parasites. This study investigated the prevalence, diversity, and risk factors of helminths and protozoa in swine raised under Intensive Management System (IMS), Semi-Intensive Management System (SIMS), and Family Subsistence Management System (FSMS) in the microregions of Andradina (SP) and Paranaíba (MS). A total of 150 fecal samples were collecte

Association between serum mineral concentrations and gastrointestinal parasite burden in zebu cattle accessing 'hora' mineral water in southwestern Ethiopia.

Gastrointestinal parasites (GIP) and mineral deficiencies are significant factors affecting health and productivity of free-ranging cattle. Adequate mineral intake, particularly from natural mineral water sources (hora), is vital for immune function, gastrointestinal health, and nutrient absorption. This study aimed to explore the association between GIP burden and serum mineral concentrations in zebu cattle (Bos indicus) routinely accessing hora mineral water in southwestern Ethiopia. A total of 180 fecal samples were collected from cattle across four districts (Bedele, Dabo, Gechi, and Borec

Two sequential PCR amplifications for detection of Schistosoma mansoni in stool samples with low parasite load.

Schistosomiasis constitutes a major public health problem, with an estimated 200 million individuals infected worldwide and 700 million people living in risk areas. In Brazil there are areas of high, medium and low endemicity. Studies have shown that in endemic areas with a low prevalence of Schistosoma infection the sensitivity of parasitological methods is clearly reduced. Consequently diagnosis is often impeded due to the presence of false-negative results. The aim of this study is to present the PCR reamplification (Re-PCR) protocol for the detection of Schistosoma mansoni in samples with

Occurrence of gastrointestinal helminths in Bactrian camel in Iran.

A study on naturally acquired gastrointestinal helminthic parasites in Bactrian camel was carried out in Ardabil province, northwest of Iran, which is the main site of this species in Iran. This species has importance in Iran due to its low population. A total of 25 faecal samples (25% of population) were examined by Clayton Lane method to determine the egg count of different types of helminths in different age groups. Helminth eggs were found in 13 (52%) of the faecal samples (0-191 eggs/gm, 51.96±13.82). Bactrian camels were infected with Nematodirus sp. (32%), Trichuris sp. (32%), Marshalla

[Paragonimiasis westermani with repeated pleural effusion and diagnosed by detecting parasite eggs in pleural effusion].

A 73-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of left chest pain, left pleural effusion and peripheral blood eosinophilia. After three months, left pleural effusion resolved without treatment and the etiology remained unclarified. Three years later, he was admitted for evaluation of right pleural effusion. Peripheral blood eosinophil count and serum IgE value were elevated. Eosinophilia was also observed in the pleural effusion. The diagnosis of paragonimiasis westermani was confirmed by immunoserological examination of the serum and by detection of Paragonimius eggs in the pleural ef

Natural Schistosoma mansoni infection in Nectomys squamipes: histopathological and morphometric analysis in comparison to experimentally infected N. squamipes and C3H/He mice.

Histopathologic and morphometric (area, perimeter, major and minor diameters) analysis of hepatic granulomas isolated from twelve naturally infected Nectomys squamipes were compared to four experimentally infected ones and six C3H/He mice. Liver paraffin sections were stained for cells and extracellular matrix. Both groups of N. squamipes presented peculiar granulomas consisting predominantly of large macrophages, full of schistosome pigment, characterizing an exudative-macrophage granuloma type, smaller than the equivalent granuloma type in mouse. Naturally infected animals exhibited granulom

Colonoscopic diagnosis of whipworm infection.

Trichuriasis is an intestinal infection found in human beings which is caused by Trichuris trichiura, more commonly known as whipworm because of its whip-like appearance. It is characterized by the invasion of the colonic mucosa by the adult Trichuris and produces minor inflammatory changes at the sites of localization. It is prevalent throughout the world, especially in tropical areas. Its diagnosis is usually made by identification of the typical eggs in the stool; adult whipworm is rarely seen during colonoscopy. Colonoscopy can directly diagnose trichuriasis, confirming the threadlike form
