Cardiovascular autonomic functions in Alzheimer's disease.

We investigated cardiovascular autonomic functions in 23 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 23 age-matched control subjects. The vagal parasympathetic function was assessed with R-R interval variation (RRIV), and sympathetic function with sympathetic skin response (SSR) and orthostatic cardiovascular reflexes. Compared with controls, the AD patients had significantly depressed RRIV during rest (6.4 +/- 1.3% vs. 7.5 +/- 1.6%, p < 0.02) and deep breathing (12.6 +/- 4.6% vs. 17.0 +/- 5.1%, p < 0.006), but all AD patients had normal SSR. After standing for 3 minutes from supine, the change

The physiology of the nose.

The nose, as an organ initiating reflexes affecting itself and the rest of the body, and as a target organ of control, is highly complex. Its innervation includes parasympathetic, sympathetic, sensory/afferent, and somatic motor nerves, which combine in a variety of morphologic pathways. The vasculature of the nose contains capacitance vessels such as sinusoids and distensible venules, as well as arteriovenous anastomoses, arterioles, capillaries, and venules. The secretory tissue of the nose includes epithelial cells, submucosal glands, and relatively large anterior or lateral serous glands;

Intervention study on cardiac autonomic nervous effects of methylmercury from seafood.

To scrutinize whether the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI, 3.4 microg/kg body weight/week) of methylmercury in Japan is safe for adults, we conducted an intervention study using heart rate variability (HRV) that has been considered to reflect cardiac events. Fifty-four healthy volunteers were recruited and divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was exposed to methylmercury at the PTWI level through consumption of bigeye tuna and swordfish for 14 weeks, and HRV parameters were compared between the two groups. In the experimental group, mean hair mercury l

Parasympathetic nerves in the kidney pelvis contribute to blood pressure regulation.

INTRODUCTION: The existence of parasympathetic innervation in the kidney has long been controversial. Recent anatomical studies have provided evidence supporting such innervation by demonstrating the presence of acetylcholine (ACh) metabolic enzymes and tracing a brain-kidney vagal axis. Although these findings confirm the anatomical pathway, the functional capacity of these nerves to release neurotransmitters remains unverified, and the physiological role of this pathway is still unknown. METHODS: We defined the innervation of the kidney pelvis by co-labeling sympathetic, parasympathetic, an

Altered parasympathetic outflow and central sensitization response to continuous pain in cyclic vomiting syndrome: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disorder of brain-gut interaction characterized by recurrent episodes of nausea and vomiting interspersed with asymptomatic periods and associated with autonomic nervous system dysfunction. We examined the dysautonomic response to noxious stimuli for patients with CVS using our previously validated approach to integrate peripheral autonomic outflow metrics, temporal summation of pain, and brain functional MRI (fMRI). Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI and ECG were acquired from patients with CVS and healthy adults during both a rest condition and a sus

ALM Fluid Therapy Shifts Sympathetic Hyperactivity to Parasympathetic Dominance in the Rat Model of Non-Compressible Hemorrhagic Shock.

Excessive sympathetic outflow following trauma can lead to cardiac dysfunction, inflammation, coagulopathy, and poor outcomes. We previously reported that buprenorphine analgesia decreased survival after hemorrhagic trauma. Our aim is to examine the underlying mechanisms of mortality in a non-compressible hemorrhage rat model resuscitated with saline or adenosine, lidocaine, magnesium (ALM). Anesthetized adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to Saline control group or ALM therapy group (both n = 10). Hemorrhage was induced by 50% liver resection. After 15 min, 0.7 mL/kg 3% NaCl

The immune system and hypertension.

A powerful interaction between the autonomic and the immune systems plays a prominent role in the initiation and maintenance of hypertension and significantly contributes to cardiovascular pathology, end-organ damage and mortality. Studies have shown consistent association between hypertension, proinflammatory cytokines and the cells of the innate and adaptive immune systems. The sympathetic nervous system, a major determinant of hypertension, innervates the bone marrow, spleen and peripheral lymphatic system and is proinflammatory, whereas the parasympathetic nerve activity dampens the inflam

Neurological episodes after minor head injury and trigeminovascular activation.

Children appear particularly susceptible to severe but reversible neurological symptoms and/or signs after minor head injury; these include headache, confusion, drowsiness, vomiting, hemiparesis, cortical blindness, or seizures. Significantly, these neurological episodes are not associated with any identifiable structural brain abnormality on neuro-imaging. We propose that the cause of this condition is a reactive hyperaemia, a 'benign hyperaemic encephalopathy' mediated via activation of the trigeminovascular system.

Changes in sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiac activation during mental load: an assessment by spectral analysis of heart rate variability.

Spectral analyses of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) fluctuations yield three typical peaks at a low (0.02-0.06 Hz), a mid (0.07-0.14 Hz) and a high (around the respiratory frequency) frequency area. These so-called bands attract the interest of researchers because they seem to offer the facility of non-invasively studying autonomic cardiovascular control mechanisms. The high frequency component is solely under vagal control, the influence of sympathetic/vagal efferents on the low and mid frequency band is unclear. We therefore investigated in a single case study (23 year old male) the

Rat bladder in the early stages of streptozotocin-induced diabetes: adrenergic and cholinergic innervation.

The adrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the bladder was studied in streptozotocin-diabetic rats. The presence of hypertrophy and distension in the 'diabetic' bladders necessitates care in assessing changes occurring in the nerves, factors which are also relevant to clinical histochemical studies. Biochemical assays of cholinergic enzymes revealed decreased activities per g wet weight tissue. However, the total activities of choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase per whole bladder were significantly increased after 2 weeks of diabetes with greater changes by 8 weeks. Total dop

Human female bladder and its noncholinergic contractile function.

The response of human female detrusor muscle to field stimulation at varying voltages, durations, and frequencies was studied in vitro. In addition, the effects of adrenergic and cholinergic agonists and antagonists, and various nerve toxins were studied. Beta-adrenergic receptors were found in detrusor muscle but no significant adrenergic innervation was seen; no alpha-adrenergic receptors were seen. Atropine, scorpion venom, tetrodotoxin, beta bungarotoxin and hemicholinium were found to inhibit bladder contraction at short-pulse durations and low frequencies by approximately 50%. Black wido

Sophisticated regulation of micturition: review of basic neurourology.

The neurological regulation of the lower urinary tract can be viewed separately from the perspective of sensory neurons and motor neurons. First, in the receptors of the bladder and urethra of sensory nerves, sensations are transmitted through the periaqueductal gray matter of the midbrain to the cerebral cortex, and the cerebrum goes through the process of decision-making. Motor neurons are divided into upper motor neurons (UMNs) and lower motor neurons (LMNs). UMNs coordinate storage and micturition in the brain stem so that synergic voiding can occur. LMNs facilitate muscle contractions in

Effects of celiac superior mesenteric ganglionectomy on glucose homeostasis and hormonal changes during oral glucose tolerance testing in rats.

The liver plays an important role in maintaining glucose homeostasis in the body. In the prandial state, some of the glucose which is absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract is converted into glycogen and stored in the liver. In contrast, the liver produces glucose by glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis while fasting. Thus, the liver contributes to maintaining blood glucose level within normoglycemic range. Glycogenesis and glycogenolysis are regulated by various mechanisms including hormones, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and the hepatic glucose content. In this study, we …

The Posterior Insular Cortex is Necessary for Feeding-Induced Jejunal Myoelectrical Activity in Male Rats.

The gastrointestinal tract exhibits coordinated muscle motility in response to food digestion, which is regulated by the central nervous system through autonomic control. The insular cortex is one of the brain regions that may regulate the muscle motility. In this study, we examined whether, and how, the insular cortex, especially the posterior part, regulates gastrointestinal motility by recording jejunal myoelectrical signals in response to feeding in freely moving male rats. Feeding was found to induce increases in jejunal myoelectrical signal amplitudes. This increase in the jejunal myoele

GERD and obesity: is the autonomic nervous system the missing link?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic condition that not only impairs the quality of life of those who are affected by it but also poses a significant economic burden. It encompasses a wide spectrum of symptoms as a result of gastric content moving into the esophagus. The most common cause of GERD, other than a hiatus hernia, is considered to be transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) normally has a higher resting tone than the stomach, thus preventing the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. The greater prevalence of

Neuroimmune activation in chronic heart failure.

Cardiac hypertrophy/remodeling manifests as a critical condition which may likely predispose to the risk of fatal heart failure and multiple organ dysfunction if not efficiently addressed, as a result of irreversible neuroendocrine, autonomic and immune system imbalances. Undeniably, the over-excitation of sympathetic and/or the breakdown of central parasympathetic tone play a significant role to be the basis of the persistent immune activation in chronic heart failure (CHF) which, to a certain extent, is primed by inflammatory reactions in the Central Nervous System. Moreover, till today, the

Premature Ventricular Contraction Coupling Interval Variability Destabilizes Cardiac Neuronal and Electrophysiological Control: Insights From Simultaneous Cardioneural Mapping.

BACKGROUND: Variability in premature ventricular contraction (PVC) coupling interval (CI) increases the risk of cardiomyopathy and sudden death. The autonomic nervous system regulates cardiac electrical and mechanical indices, and its dysregulation plays an important role in cardiac disease pathogenesis. The impact of PVCs on the intrinsic cardiac nervous system, a neural network on the heart, remains unknown. The objective was to determine the effect of PVCs and CI on intrinsic cardiac nervous system function in generating cardiac neuronal and electric instability using a novel cardioneural m

Glibenclamide treatment blocks metabolic dysfunctions and improves vagal activity in monosodium glutamate-obese male rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Autonomic nervous system imbalance is associated with metabolic diseases, including diabetes. Glibenclamide is an antidiabetic drug that acts by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and is widely used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Since there is scarce data concerning autonomic nervous system activity and diabetes, the aim of this work was to test whether glibenclamide can improve autonomic nervous system activity and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor function in pre-diabetic obese male rats. METHODS: Pre-diabetes was induced by treatment with monos
