Anxiety in parents of children with CHD.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of CHD not only affects the patient but also their entire environment, including parents, causing significant alterations in their mental health. This study was to assess the levels of anxiety and depression in parents of children with CHD at different stages of the disease. METHODS: The PMNCC and PMNCR questionnaires were administered to parents of children with CHD to measure levels of state anxiety (STAI-E) and trait anxiety (STAI-R). Caring for Children of Incarcerated Parents.

By age 18, one in fourteen American children has had a parent incarcerated. Although children from all backgrounds experience parental incarceration, racial and ethnic minority groups and those living in poverty are disproportionately affected. Parental incarceration is an adverse childhood experience that can negatively affect health and well-being over the life course. However, resilient children of incarcerated parents can flourish despite profound adversity. Pediatric providers should create safe, inclusive medical homes that foster sensitive disclosures and discussions about parental inca

A network approach to parental burnout.

BACKGROUND: The use of network analyses in psychology has increasingly gained traction in the last few years. A network perspective views psychological constructs as dynamic systems of interacting elements. OBJECTIVE: We present the first study to apply network analyses to examine how the hallmark features of parental burnout - i.e., exhaustion related to the parental role, emotional distancing from children, and a sense of ineffectiveness in the parental role - interact with one another and with maladaptive behaviors related to the partner and the child(ren), when these variables are concept

Parent Coping With Adolescent Trichotillomania.

Adolescents who struggle with trichotillomania (TTM; hairpulling disorder) are not alone, their parents also struggle. The focus of this qualitative study was to identify what parents (N = 30) perceive as stressful about parenting an adolescent with TTM and how they cope with these stressors. Parents described uncertainty about the course of the disorder and powerlessness in the ability to protect their adolescent from the reactions of others or assist them in curtailing the hairpulling as very distressing. Data analysis revealed eight coping strategies used to manage these stressors and the a…

Parents' employment and children's wellbeing.

Since modern welfare reform began in the 1980s, we have seen low-income parents leave the welfare rolls and join the workforce in large numb … evening and night shifts. The stress that parents bring home from their jobs can detract from their parenting skills, undermine the atmosphere in the home, and thereby introduce stress into children's lives. Unfortunately, it is low-income parents who are most likely to work in stressful, low-quality jobs that feature low pay, little autonomy, inflexible ho …

Parents as practitioners in preterm care.

The very preterm birth of an infant is physiologically traumatic for the infant and physiologically and psychologically traumatic for the parents. The manner of care delivery in the first few days and weeks of the infant's life plays a large role in determining the impact of that trauma. For optimal outcomes parents need to be integrated into the care process as the primary practitioners of their infant's care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Supporting and enabling parents to be central to the care process establishes a consistent care environment where parents are in control and able to

Parental migration and Asperger's syndrome.

Parental immigration has been suggested as a possible risk factor for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but findings have been inconsistent. Very few studies have focused specifically on Asperger's syndrome. The aim of this study was to examine the association between maternal and paternal immigration and the diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome in offspring. The study was a nested case-control study based on a national birth cohort in Finland. Children born in 1987-2005 and diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome by the year 2007 were identified from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Register (N = 1,783).

The psychosocial treatment of parental alienation.

Parental alienation occurs in divorces when one parent indoctrinates the child to dislike, fear, and avoid contact with the other parent. Mental health professionals who treat children and adolescents are likely to encounter victims of parental alienation in clinical practice, and it is important to identify and treat these youngsters earlier, when the condition is mild, rather than later, when the parental alienation is almost intractable. This article presents an overview of the treatment of parental alienation, which is called reunification therapy. All the parties involved in the case have

Parental vaccine concerns in Kentucky.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of parents are questioning the safety and necessity of routine childhood immunizations. Locally produced vaccine risk communication materials may be effective in reassuring these parents. However, little is known about specific vaccine safety concerns in the state of Kentucky. METHODS: An Internet-based survey focusing on parental vaccine safety concerns and potential vaccine risk communication strategies was sent to all members of the Kentucky Chapter of the Amerian Academy of Pediatrics. RESULTS: There were 121 respondents who routinely administered childho

The Odyssey of MeCP2 and parental imprinting.

BACKGROUND: Clinical guidelines for acute non-specific low back pain recommend avoiding imaging studies, refraining from strong opioids and invasive treatments, and providing information to patients to stay active. Despite these recommendations, many patients undergo diagnostic and therapeutic assessments that are not in line with the current evidence. AIM: To assess the management of acute non-specific low back pain by Swiss general practitioners (GPs) and their adherence to guideline recommendations. METHODS: We performed a survey using two clinical case vignettes of patients with acute no

Known semen donors: to be or not to be a parent.

The law has failed to keep pace with the reality that lesbian couples are conceiving children and raising families. At both Commonwealth and State levels, a complex web of legislation engulfs and winds its way through this area of the law. This article seeks to expose some of the bizarre and anomalous consequences that have emerged through the interaction of these provisions and the resulting judicial interpretations. It is argued that this incongruous, unsatisfactory situation cannot be allowed to continue. Uniform State and Commonwealth legislation must be enacted and existing Commonwealth l

[Parents' coping with a diabetic child].

The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the process of parental coping with diabetic children in early childhood. The parental coping process was followed for a four-week period after the diagnosis of diabetes. The parents of two girls whose diabetes was diagnosed in early childhood served as study subjects. The data were collected by interviewing and observing the parents over four separate periods, first in hospital and later at home. The data were analyzed by the timeseries and content analysis methods. The main categories were formulated on the basis of coping theories. The
