Myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands is a rare entity, with scarce amount of case reports in the literature. Due to its infrequency, its diagnosis is usually difficult and uncertain. Although there are reports of locoregional recurrences and distant metastases, its low incidence and varied biological behavior limits the clinical evidence that can be used to predict the prognosis and determine the course of treatment. We present a 23-year-old female patient without past medical history with an initial 1-year history of volume increase in the right parotid region of tumor aspect and pa…

Salivary gland adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified (NOS) is a malignant epithelial tumor composed of ductal/glandular structures with or without cystic formation. Histologically it is classified as high grade with relevant biological behavior. Although both minor and major glands may be involved, the majority (60%) implicate the parotid gland. Location, regional lymph node status, and histological grade are some of the factors that predict the progress of the disease and the development of metastases. Long follow-up is considered the standard option as distant metastases (DM) may occur desp

SMGB and PSP are among the most abundant products of the immature acinar cells in developing rat parotid and submandibular glands and are also products of the sublingual gland serous demilunes. Previous analysis of Smgb and Psp cDNA clones demonstrated a high degree of sequence similarity between the signal peptide-encoding and 3' untranslated regions of these transcripts, although the secreted proteins themselves are more divergent. The current study reports the upstream sequences, genomic organization and localization of the Psp and Smgb genes. Both structural genes contain nine exons and ar

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign tumor of the salivary glands, with fewer than 50 cases reported worldwide. Its clinical and radiological resemblance to malignant tumors poses diagnostic challenges. A 35-year-old female presented with a slow-growing, painless left parotid mass persisting for 2 years. Ultrasonography revealed a well-circumscribed, hypoechoic nodule measuring 2.5 cm. Fine-needle aspiration cytology suggested a benign lymphoid lesion, but definitive diagnosis required histopathological examination post-superficial parotidectomy. Microscopic analysis showed proliferating se

Metastatic disease to the parotid lymph nodes typically occurs secondary to head and neck and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). Nasal septal SCC is an exceedingly rare primary cancer that rarely spreads to regional lymph nodes. A 39-year-old man presented with left-sided cervical lymphadenopathy and nasal polyposis. Initial assessment suggested that he may have a head and neck SCC of unknown origin with nodal deposits in close proximity to the parotid gland. Cross-sectional imaging did not reveal the primary source. After further review of imaging and examination under anaesthetic, the

Parotid trauma can lead to both short and long-term complications such as bleeding, infection, facial nerve injury, sialocele, and salivary fistula, resulting in pain and disfigurement. Facial injuries inferior to a line extended from the tragus to the upper lip should raise concern for parotid injury. These injuries can be stratified into three regions as they relate to the masseter muscle. Injuries posing the greatest risk of damage to Stensen's duct include those anterior to the posterior border of the masseter and necessitate exploration. When the duct is disrupted, emphasis should be plac

We present a rare case with an incidental finding of Warthin's tumour demonstrating I-131 uptake on a post-therapy whole-body scan in a patient treated for thyroid cancer with total thyroidectomy. The unexpected radioiodine concentration in the parotid region raised initial concern for metastatic disease, illustrating how non-thyroidal lesions can mimic pathological findings in post-ablative imaging. This case highlights a well-recognised diagnostic challenge in nuclear medicine: false-positive I-131 uptake. Differentiating benign radioiodine-avid lesions from true metastases is critical to pr…

The frontal branch of the facial nerve innervates several muscles in the upper face and is essential for facial expression and eye closure. Injury to the frontal branch can result in functional and aesthetic issues; therefore, a thorough understanding of the anatomy and course of the frontal branch is essential for safe surgery in the lateral face and temporal region. The course of the frontal branch is variable, but certain anatomic landmarks can be used to locate the nerve. Preoperative planning, careful dissection, and intraoperative monitoring are critical to minimize nerve injury in tempo

Myoepithelioma is an uncommon benign tumor of the orofacial region arising from the salivary glands. These tumors are composed of specifically myoepithelial cells lacking ductal differentiation and were initially considered as a type of pleomorphic adenoma. Though they commonly arise from the parotid gland, there are a few cases that emerge from the minor salivary glands of the palate and oral cavity. Myoepitheliomas resemble many other tumors arising from the palate including pleomorphic adenoma. This report depicts a case of myoepithelioma of the minor salivary gland of the palate in a 23-ye

Tumors of the lateral wall of the mouth have different origins and behaviors. These lesions often arise from salivary tissues, such as the accessory parotid gland, but tumors can also originate from the muscles, buccal fat pad, or other structures. Surgical approaches are limited in this region by the presence of the facial nerve and the Stensen's duct. In this article, we present 9 cases of midcheek masses that were operated on via extra- or intraoral approaches. We discuss the problems related to the diagnosis of such tumors, as well as the indications and rationales for different treatment

Ectopic salivary gland tumors are rare in children. When salivary gland tumors do develop, they preferentially affect major salivary glands and then minor salivary glands. Pleomorphic adenoma, also referred to as a benign mixed tumor, is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. Approximately 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland, while the remaining 10% affect the minor salivary glands. However, it is uncommon to find them elsewhere in the head and neck region. We report a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma in the upper neck, an unusual site in an 8-year-old boy.

The occurrence of renal carcinoma metastasis to the head and neck region is extremely rare. Some authors have reported metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the parotid glands, nose and paranasal sinus, tongue, larynx, thyroid and palatine tonsil. In this report we describe a rare case of renal cell cancer metastasized to the right tonsil in a 76-year-old man with previously diagnosed bone and lung metastases. To the best of our knowledge this is the first documented example of radiotherapy treatment in this type of presentation. Radiotherapy was effective in treating the lesion with satisfact

Plexiform neurofibromas in major salivary glands are rarely described. In the literature, most reported tumours have been present in the parotid gland region. A three-year-old boy with a family history of neurofibromatosis presented with a rapidly growing left submandibular mass. The clinical diagnosis was that of a neurofibroma rather than a primary salivary gland tumour. Resection of the lesion revealed a plexiform neurofibroma involving the submandibular gland. Although these tumours have a neurogenic rather than a salivary gland origin, they must be considered in the differential diagnosis

These are cysts and fistulae which closely adherent to the external auditory canal and drain through the high lateral cervical suprahyoid site. Misdiagnosis is common with these lesions and inadequate removal leads to surgical failure. A review of the embryology of this region is necessary since we intend to explain the clinical aspects and the variable relationship to the facial nerve. Eight cases are described and the literature pertaining to first branchial cleft syndrome is reviewed. Diagnostic and management problems will be discussed. Basaloid neoplasms of the head and neck region pose a specific challenge both for clinicians and pathologists. It is a diverse group of neoplasms that include benign as well as malignant entities. These neoplasms can arise from various head and neck subsites such as skin, salivary gland, and sinonasal tract. Cytological diagnosis of these tumors is extremely difficult due to morphological overlap with other biphasic tumors and within the basaloid group itself. Here, we are presenting a case of basaloid neoplasm which turned out to be a basal cell adenocarcinoma of the left parotid gland on pos

NUT carcinoma is an aggressive carcinoma with an overall poor survival outcome. The mediastinum and head and neck area, especially the sinonasal region, are among the common sites of disease. Histopathological diagnosis of NUT carcinoma is often very challenging due to its overlapping features with other poorly differentiated carcinomas. We report a case of NUT carcinoma arising from the parotid gland of a young female patient. Primary NUT carcinoma of salivary gland is very rare, with only 15 such cases reported in the literature to date. Our case highlights the diagnostic challenges associat

Salivary gland neoplasms represent less than 3% of all tumors in the general population of which benign adenomas account for 65.5%. Basal cell adenoma which is classified as a subtype of monomorphic adenomas accounts for 1-2% of all salivary gland epithelial tumors, and more than 80% of them arise in the major salivary glands, mostly the parotid gland and has female predominance reporting mostly in the elderly age groups. We here report a case of basal cell adenoma of trabecular type in a male patient of age 45 years in the minor salivary glands of left posterior palatal region.

Acute swelling of the parotid gland after general anesthesia (commonly known as anesthesia mumps or acute postoperative sialadenitis) is a rare but declared complication of anesthesia. The etiology is not clear, but some possible causes such as obstruction of glandular excretory ducts caused by patient position and increase in the viscosity of the saliva because of acute dehydratation and/or medications like atropin have been proposed. We report a swelling in the left preauricular and postauricular region extending to the angle of the mandibule in a 35-year-old patient after left lateral decub

Guttural pouch tympanites was diagnosed in eight foals with respiratory stridor and tympanic swelling in the parotid region. Three foals were treated by transendoscopic neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser fenestration of the median septum between the guttural pouches. One foal died of pneumonia, and the other two foals recovered completely, although the fenestration later closed in one foal. Five foals were treated by creating a salpingopharyngeal fistula using transendoscopic laser irradiation; complete resolution of the tympanites occurred. Transendoscopic laser surgery in stand…

This disease is discussed in the past mostly in the dermatological literature, the ENT specialist is little aware of its existence. The condition is characterized by subcutaneous, painless nodules occurring most frequently in the region of the ear, parotid gland, cheek and lateral neck. The lesion must be differentiated from disease of the lymph nodes, especially malignant tumours. The pathologic diagnosis is based upon a hyperplasia of angiolymphatic tissue and marked blood eosinophilia. The prognosis appears to be favourable. A case is presented together with the clinical picture and histopa
